CONSTRUCTION OF BUILDING 26 IN 1916

A HISTORY OF INNOVATION.

■ The Electric Works campus got its start in the late 1800s with the establishment of The Fort Wayne Jenney Electric Light Company

■ Inventor James A. Jenney chose the spot to manufacture his Electric Arc Lamp and a small generator called the Dynamo; a campus building still bears the Jenney Company name

■ Soon after, General Electric acquired an interest and then purchased the campus outright in 1899; the Fort Wayne Electric Works of General Electric was created in 1911

■ Over the course of 100-plus years, tens of thousands of GE workers built industrial products ranging from rotating machines to commercial lighting and refrigeration units before focusing on small electrical motors and electrical transformers in the early 20th century

■ The campus played an integral role in GE becoming one of the world’s largest producers of these devices throughout the 1930s

■ During World War II, GE emerged as a powerhouse supplier of superchargers for military aircraft

■ The campus’ century-long culture of adaptability, innovation and manufacturing excellence lives on today with Electric Works

CENTRALLY LOCATED. Electric Works is located in downtown Fort Wayne, just south of the central business district and a short stroll from the historic West Central neighborhood and its thoughtfully restored homes. The commercially vibrant Broadway Corridor bisects the site north and south, creating an East and West Campus.

Linked by history, culture, and geography, the residential neighborhoods located directly adjacent to Electric Works are tree-lined with ample sidewalks and street parking. The community is celebrated for its cultural and demographic diversity and its working-class pride. The campus is just a few blocks from Parkview Field, home of the Fort Wayne TinCaps. It is a short bike ride to the Rivergreenway, Fort Wayne’s nationally recognized, 100-mile-long trail system.
