STUDENT SUCCESS: Meet Erica Brown Age: 21 Center: Pinellas County Region: Atlanta Hometown: Kissimmee, Florida CTT: CNA JC Dates: 9/5/2015-12/14/2016 Employer: Good Hope of Pinellas Erica Brown came to the Pinellas County Job Corps Center
on September 5, 2015, as a transfer student from Homestead Job Corps. She en-rolled in the Job Corps Program to obtain a High School Diploma and a trade. With the help of her Instructor, Ms. Brown had no problem advancing in the Nursing As-sistant trade. “I attribute my success to this - I never gave or took any excuse – Florence Nightingale, Mrs. Parks tried to instill this in all of her students daily,” expressed Ms. Brown. She passed the Florida State board exam and received her Certified Nursing Assistant credentials. Ms. Brown completed Pinellas County Job Corps on September 14, 2016. She is currently employed at Good Hope Assistant Living Facility. Her future plans are to attend college to become a Registered Nurse. “Erica is a bright young lady and very eager to learn,” stated Certified Nursing As-sistant Instructor, Shawnda Parks. “I tell the students that if you make excuses or let anyone give you any excuse, then you are hindering yourself from becoming suc-cessful.”
THE INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE Pinellas County Job Corps students Jocelyn Hill and Demenlynn Fitim are sharpening their skills at an internship with the Pinellas Urban League (PUL) in St Petersburg, Florida. Internship programs are a vital part of the student’s educational development. In ad-dition to classroom instruction, the students get valua-ble “hands-on” experience by actually performing duties common to their career field at job sites. If the student excels while interning, they have a good chance of being hired at the end of the internship.
Jocelyn Hill, a Medical Assistant student, practiced taking blood pressure, glucose testing, measuring cholesterol and BMI’s for participants who attended the High-ways to Health event, sponsored by the Pinellas Urban League. “It was a lot of fun,” said Hill. Demenlynn Fitim, a Medical Billing student, assisted with registration, filing and organizing the paperwork at the Highways to Health event. Both students provided excellent customer service and greeted each participant with a smile. In addition to assisting in the Highways to Health event, both Jocelyn and Demenlynn gained valuable data entry experience organizing PUL’s transition to their new computer systems. “The new system will save us so much time and en-ergy, but, unfortunately, all of our old files need to be inputted into our new sys-tem,” said LaDonna Butler, Health Program Coordinator at PUL. “And we have a lot of files that need to be entered.” Jocelyn and Demenlynn are determined to make the transition to the new system as seamless as possible. “They are doing great,” said LaDonna Butler, “They get here early and are ready to work when I arrive.” Both students plan to find work in their chosen fields after they finish the intern-ships. Deminlynn plans on staying in the St. Petersburg area and finding a job as a medical biller/front office administrative assistant and Jocelyn hopes to work in a local doctor’s office as a medical assistant.

STUDENT SUCCESS: Meet Lady-Karlicia Brown
Age: 20 Center: Pinellas County Region: Atlanta Hometown: St. Petersburg, FL CTT: Pharmacy Tech Dates of enrollment: 03/07/2016-09/16/2016 Employer: CVS Position: Pharmacy Technician
Lady-Karlicia Brown is from St Petersburg, FL. She has continuously persevered throughout her academic career and within her personal life. At 11 years of age, Ms. Brown along with three younger siblings, were abandoned by their father leaving her mother to support the children alone. Ms. Brown said, “the transition was very hard, but I had to adjust and keep moving forward.” She successfully graduated from Gibbs High School while also working part-time at the local Walmart. After high school, Ms. Brown wanted to continue her education but could not afford col-lege. While trapped in a dead-end job, she stumbled across an old friend who had attended the Pinellas County Job Corps Center who encouraged her to enroll. After hearing about the wonderful opportunity she says, “I jumped right in to take the op-portunity!”
In March 2016, at the age of twenty, Ms. Brown became a nonresidential student of the Pinellas County Job Corps Center and continued to work at Walmart. She was very motivated and worked quickly through one of the most difficult programs at the Center. In only 6 months, she completed her trade, obtained her certification and even obtained employment in the pharmacy department at CVS. She made ini-tial contact and assisted the Center in obtaining the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the CVS site to be a Work Based Learning site. She is now employed fulltime as a Pharmacy Tech at that same CVS location near her home. Her next step is enrolling in college next year to continue her education!
REBUILDING TOGETHER TAMPA BAY, INC.
August 29 – 30, 2016, the Pinellas County Job Corps Center’s Carpentry class partnered with Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay (RTTB) to restore a house for a deserving family. Re-building Together Tampa Bay, Inc., repairs houses and communities in the Tampa Bay Area to families in need. Pinellas County Job Corps Instructor, Jeremy Kennebeck and students: Oren Gomez, Mikaila Cole, Tyler Carter, Andrew McClenton, Preston Dodson, Charles Pettis, Jeremiah Bow-ers and Quentin Vanterpool replaced windows as well as demolished the kitchen and bathroom. “It was a great learning experience that I enjoyed, I think we can learn more by working out in the real world,” stated Carpentry student, Oren Gomez. Upon completion, the house will be sold to a family that meets the quali-fications of the RTTB program. The two companies have established a Work Based Learning agreement for students. RTTB Volunteer Coordinator, Jeremy Twachtman said, “the students did a terrific job and I look forward to working together again in the future.” The experience was positive for everyone.
