About MITRE

Not-for-profit organization that operates federally funded research and

development centers (FFRDCs) sponsored by the United States federal

government. MITRE helps its sponsors with:

– Scientific research and analysis

– Development and acquisition

– Systems engineering and integration

From MITRE website:

– “…We foster a culture of knowledge sharing. We apply what we learn from

addressing one sponsor's challenges to similar issues faced by other

agencies. This means when sponsors engage with us, they have access to

all the minds of MITRE…”

Work Product

Deliverables

• Use semantic encyclopedias to capture

and reuse cross-cutting knowledge across:

• Projects

• Customer missions

• Technologies

• Corporate centers

• Aggregate and visualize longitudinal

behavior patterns of staff, business units,

topics, task activities, customer missions.

• Preserve corporate cross-cutting memory.

Marketing the value proposition

“Wiki” tightly associated with Wikipedia and Wiki Leaks. “Semantic wiki” is a concatenation of two concepts – semantic web

and wiki publishing. “Enterprise Encyclopedia” is technology agnostic and tangible.

Page 6: Building Enterprise Knowledge Using Semantic Encyclopedias

Set of extensions and design patterns for constructing semantic

encyclopedias based on MediaWiki and Semantic MediaWiki.

– Promotes findability, reuse, and analytics.

– Accelerates knowledge capture across linked encyclopedias.

– Received 2 MITRE Knowledge Management Awards.

– 50+ MGF encyclopedias at MITRE and at customer sites with varying

levels of success and adoption.

Origins

One size might not fit all

Wikipedia benefits from a very large user community. Small user communities benefit from shaping their

encyclopedia’s structure.

Needed a structured approach for

capturing and reusing cross-cutting

knowledge.

Iconography

Smart phone iconography developed in anticipation of mobile access is not alluring from the desktop.

Common denominators

While other groups share project information, this community shares events and tool evaluations.

Champions are the strongest indicators of success

A tireless champion redirects contributions from email and other formats to the semantic encyclopedia.

Re-skin the user interface for the enterprise

Knowledge workers need intuitive user interfaces. Developers tolerate busy or complicated interfaces.

Periodic Model Review

User community behavior determines the strength of a model.

Small contributions form large patterns

Simple reports visualized as tag clouds, tables, and charts provide an evidence-based view of longitudinal individual as well

as group activity.

Tool Taxonomy

Taxonomy

Application areas map to business units. This helps users see where their tools “fit” within MITRE technical centers.

Integrate Related Enterprise Data

Integrate enterprise data

Combining enterprise data with semantic encyclopedia content helps groups document their work program.

Visualization

Project information coverage diagnostics can look like an eye chart and yet be very useful to a community.

Developer Documentation

A good idea can be applied to itself

We use a semantic encyclopedia for documentation and training. We built 25+ extensions and 5 are planned for

contribution to the MediaWiki community.

Proliferation

The short term and harder goal is to increase participation. We cultivated group-specific encyclopedias with their own

metadata definitions to grow knowledge. Encyclopedia proliferation was more important in the short term than the

development of common metadata definitions. The longer range goal is to evolve towards one encyclopedia.

Federate Semantic Encyclopedias

Encyclopedias, chapters, book shelves

Opportunity to federate distributed semantic encyclopedias into a unified knowledge worker experience.

Enterprise knowledge sharing

– Top down – one size fits all.

– Exchange questions and answers in discussion forums.

– Create work products for a specific purpose.

– Email documents among a group of editors.

– Upload documents to document repositories.

– Publish enterprise stories.

– Organize technical exchange meetings.

– Fill out enterprise forms.

Federation of semantic enterprise encyclopedias

– Bottom up approach (group-specific).

– Abstract knowledge work into reusable semantic entities.

– Create encyclopedia articles using semantic forms for an enterprise audience.

– Reuse semantic entities through queries.

– Combine social and enterprise content within semantic encyclopedias.

– Federate semantic encyclopedias.

Semantic MediaWiki is well-suited for building enterprise knowledge one group at a time.
