Intergenerational and Family Learning for the Lifelong Learning Society

Explore a new approach to adults learning

Communication between schools and parents becomes crucial in supporting the effective engagement of students in school activities. Ipssar “Pietro Piazza very often has to tackle both the problem of integrating children at risk and educating adults to understand their children’s learning/social problem within the school so the participants had the opportunity to explore a new approach to adults learning and training to improve the educational relationship mobilizing the family members to learn together.

Focus on family learning outcomes

The workshops focussed on learning outcomes for adults and young students and how these can be developed into interactive intergenerational learning. We aimed at transforming the educational relationship supporting and motivating families and trainers with pathways to improve their knowledge by means of family learning: adults are not only caregivers, but also educators, whose actions significantly impact the schooling system as well as future life, and the lifelong learning decisions of growing children being a means for achieving socio-cultural inclusion and preventing students from dropping out of education.

The Gaetano Basile’s evidendence(ON “4OOO ANNI DI CUCINA”)

The group of parents of our students involved in the Grundtvig project has attended a series of

workshops led by prof. Gaetano Basile discovering History, Geography, Art, Social

Organization, Traditions, Synchronic and Diachronic Use of Sicilian/Italian Language

through 4000 years of gastronomy.

Parents workshops

The participants had the opportunity to explore a new approach to

• adults learning and training to improve the educational relationship mobilizing the family members to learn together

• the training of adults trainers (parents/teachers)• technologies and family learning ( ICT is a privileged means of learning and creates

enormous benefit across different generations bringing young people and senior together)

• intergenerational transmission, or exchange of knowledge (4000 years of gastronomy) between one generation and another

Parents attended the workshops with increasing enthusiasm showing how learning can be an enjoyable and positive experience to be transferred to

their children.

Engagement with further learning activities

Helping families to reflect on what they have learned and achieved by taking part to the

workshops we managed to highlight the importance of stimulating their children’s

learning and development, motivating parents and grandparents to engage with

further learning activities.

Monitoring the course satisfaction

At the end of the course the parents were asked to fill in a questionnare concerning the new methodological ideas acquired during the workshops

Parents were asked to answer questions aiming at checking if• communication inside the family group had improved as a result of

attending the workshops• the acquired personal knowledge may be transferred in every day life• they had acquired a good practice to interact with their children• they were stimulated to research further information on the topics they

had been exposed to• they had the chance to transfer what they had learned to their childrenand questions aiming at checking their satisfaction about the topics, the

methodologies used, the communicative skills of the trainer and tutors. The results were absolutely encouraging. The percentage of the item “very good” is

predominant in all questions. Here are some examples:
