Introduction• Examined the feasibility of adding a fitness center into existing
unused space in Sorin Hall where the cafeteria and dining area previously were located.
• Researched the need for students to have an alternative space to workout because:• Students felt intimidated working out alongside the athletes• Clarence Nelson Fitness Center is overcrowded at times during
the day• Students were becoming frustrated with having to wait for
machines, etc.

Criteria Questions• Is there enough student demand for a new facility?• Are students unhappy with the current facility?• Have other colleges been successful with two fitness centers
and one of them only being for athletes?• Will the students benefit from a second fitness center?

Methods• I have conducted research using the Hamline Bush Library
databases.• Academic Search Premier and Google Scholar
• I have conducted internet research for quality material.• Keywords Used:
• College fitness centers• College fitness centers and overcrowding• gym overcrowding problems• college gyms and student athlete separation
• I created and distributed a questionnaire to get a better understanding of current issues the students had at the university in regards to the fitness center.
• I have compared fitness center situations at Augsburg College and Gustavus Adolphus College

Primary Research
![Page 7: Building a New Fitness Center: A Feasibility Study Eng 1800 Drew Carlson](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022072008/56649d755503460f94a558bb/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Primary Research
Students were asked if they would like one facility to be for athletes only and one fitness center for only students.
![Page 8: Building a New Fitness Center: A Feasibility Study Eng 1800 Drew Carlson](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022072008/56649d755503460f94a558bb/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Primary Research
Students were surveyed on what gym equipment they use when they workout. This is what the new fitness center will be filled with to make students satisfied.

Conclusions• Student demand is there• Hamline Univeristy budget is unknown• For these reasons, feasibility is unknown and more research must
be conducted and Hamline budget committee must be consulted to make final decision.
![Page 10: Building a New Fitness Center: A Feasibility Study Eng 1800 Drew Carlson](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022072008/56649d755503460f94a558bb/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Recommendations• Although there is convincing data that shows the students of
Hamline want a second fitness center on campus and perceive it as beneficial, it is recommended that:
• Distribute the questionnaire to more students because the sample size of this study is too small to accurately portray the wishes of the entire student body.
• Research certain aspects of the study with the Hamline board members, they will have accurate records of the schools budget to determine if this spending is feasible.
• Look closer at other points of view to determine concerns of people who don’t think this is a good idea.
• Determine the final cost of this project, and make determination with the cost in mind.
