06.09.16 - WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Senate Committee on Appropriations today approved for Senate consideration a bipartisan spending bill that provides increased funding for medical research, job training, educational opportunities and the fight against opioid abuse.

The New Hampshire Story

From 2014 through 2016, a handful of vaccine-concerned groups fought against a newly-approved immunization registry in New Hampshire. Their views went largely unanswered and the few who spoke in opposition felt ostracized.


The New Hampshire Story

New Hampshire’s Department of Health was unable to advance promulgated rules to enact the new law, due in large measure to the active and unanswered (and often factually incorrect) criticisms from these organizations. Before a March 2016 vote, approximately 30 letters were sent to JLCAR opposing the new state registry, and only 4 individuals wrote in support.

At a March committee meeting, the health department’s rules were rejected 5-3 by legislators (for a second time) with a final vote due approximately 60 days.


The New Hampshire StoryIn late March, a new grassroots petition was started and sighed by 470

supporters – nearly all of whom were concerned NH residents.


The New Hampshire Story The petition, along with hard

work from the NH state health department, and many others, helped enact the rules on a final 7 – 3 vote in favor of the registry.

The lesson for vaccine advocates and disease prevention experts is that grassroots misinformation needs to be answered and rebutted with facts. The vast majority of people support vaccinations, but an unanswered vocal minority can impact policy.


Precision medicine initiative• On January 20, 2015 President Obama announced the Precision Medicine Initiative and a great deal of work has occurred in this area since.

• A Precision Medicine Task Force met Feb. 12 2016 to begin mapping out opportunities for the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) to address health IT interoperability challenges related to PMI.

• The interoperability pathways essential to PMI flow in several directions:

–From lab systems to EHRs–From patients to EHRs–From EHRs to the research community–From lab systems to patients

• ONC Announced in May 2016–What’s more, the PMI within ONC’s Interoperability Roadmap should define means of access including tools such as patient portals and APIs that enable individuals to access all data types, whether lab results, medications or even genomics.

–“Participants’ access to their aggregated information will promote participation and retention,” said the Task Force’s other co-chair, Leslie Kelly Hall. “So data return should offer dynamic and compelling visualizations to promote its use. And patients should have access to computable, raw genetic testing and sequencing data.”


STC is talking to possible partners (bio-banking organizations) regarding genomics and bio specimen tracking.


Also, STC is investigating ways to support Kidney Stone research and treatment thought the utilization of registries.
