CONTENTS

Portsmouth has a diverse community that is growing from strength to strength andURBONDwas founded tohelp the local people to integratewith oneanother.

At URBOND we accept that as human beings we are not perfect and we can all makemistakes from time to time. We can help to promote a peaceful and better livingenvironment for everyone if we learn to accept each other, embrace each other’sdifferences and not prejudge one another. We need to lower our guards and take theopportunitieswe have to interactwith everyone in the local community.

Since its inception, URBOND has united people from over 100 different nationalities andbackgrounds and via our events they have been able to build solid ongoing relationshipswith each other. When people attend our events we ensure that a range of activities aremade available as we have found this to be a particularly effective method of bringingpeople together in a funenvironment.

If you are a visitor, have recently moved into the area or have never attended URBONDevents previously then we would very much like to encourage you to come along, join inthe fun and be part of our caring local organisation. The bond between our communitymembers is stronger than ever, let us take the opportunity to honour the many cultures, traditions, andbeliefs thatmakePortsmouthsuch awonderful place to live.

Thank you for your timeandwehope tosee yousoonat oneofURBOND’s events.

ABOUT US

MISSION AND VISION

We began as a small group of friends meeting up on weekends for home cooked meals and achance to catch up. When the weather permitted barbeques at the Southsea common were theorder of the day and it was at these barbeques that we began to invite people to join us as theypassed by. This was the point at which we realised just how easy it was to breakdown socialbarriers and to get to know new people from all parts of society with no hidden agenda.

In particular Portsmouth's minority ethnic communities have more than trebled in the last 15years from 5% of the local population in 2001 increasing to just over 11% in 2011, and now estimatedat over 16%. Furthermore Portsmouth's more central boroughs are in the bottom quartile forcommunity cohesion, and Portsmouth centre is listed as an area of deprivation. One of the resultsof this is that communities do not integrate.

URBOND C.I.C is a fully registered community interestcompany (not for profit organisation), established sinceMarch 2013.

The group was founded with the primary purpose being tohelp the local community to integrate with one another, tomake friends or simply to be accepted in the localneighbourhood for who they are, whatever their beliefs andideologies.

We stand for a cohesive city, creating an environment that can unite differentcultures, break down social barriers, create networking opportunities, spread loveand encourage a connection between all of the members of our local community.

Over the next few years we will be working on expanding the reach of URBOND toengage with a larger audience both nationally and internationally by continuing tointeract with individuals and to form a bigger and stronger community.

URBOND has been founded on the back of these such issues with the aimbeing to bring together people from the local area to form a bigger andstronger community. This offers members of the community the chanceto join together and discuss topics that may not otherwise be discussed.Feedback from such events has informed us that before attending ourevents local people would not integrate with one and other freely due topre-conceived ideas, often fuelled by stories in the media.

The URBOND group has many key objectives such as reducing culturalbarriers, addressing issues of isolation, lack of confidence, unemployment, and crime (including radicalisation) and even aims toaddress other issues including health concerns rising from obesity.

"URBOND is a fast moving Community Interest Company that helps bring people together in a fun andfriendly way. They hold training and social events and they love their sporting activities.

They welcome everyone and offer support and help in many ways, they have a fabulous reputation in thePortsmouth area for doing great things like raising money for other local community projects.

I am proud to be able say that we have supported them in their growth and look forward to supportingthem in the future."

SOCIO-CULTURAL EVENTSAt the end of every quarter we host an event aimed at bringing members of ourlocal community together in attempt to build a bigger and stronger communitywhich is a great facilitator for cultural exchange and interaction. Activities includesalsa, board games, mini table tennis tournaments, dominoes, a quiz and also abuffet of various nutritious foods. The events promote togetherness and tranquillitywithin our neighbourhoods and spread love within our community and beyond. They have proven to be a great platform for people to make new friends and evenexpose attendees to job opportunities and boost their self-esteem.

We organise talks and seminars on key health issues and run sports and fitnesssessions under our Football and Volleyball Projects in order to increaseparticipation and encourage inclusion.

URBOND also host family fun days during school holidays, which present theopportunity for parents to unwind, forget about work and focus on their children. The events give parents and their children the chance to spend quality time totogether and make memories as a family. Furthermore it brings children in thecommunity together and provides the opportunity for them to build friendships withother children in the local community.

During all URBOND events, we take the opportunity to raise funds for local charitiesby offering members of the local community the opportunities to donate via thevarious activities on offer.

"Community cohesion in Portsmouth is a very important issue. We’re working here as a council inconjunction with community groups, faith groups and the police to ensure community cohesion iscarried out in a constructive way. I welcome the creation of Urbond and it’s an excellentopportunity for people to come together in a welcoming environment on a regular basis.“

""My wife and I have been very fortunate to enjoy the hospitality andfriendship of the URBOND organisation on a few occasions now. We haveattended some of their regular social gatherings at the Charles DickensCentre and are so impressed with the way that everyone, whatever theirbackground, is made to feel welcome in an open, relaxed socialgathering. The team that organises the event and those that cook up a wonderfulspicy meal all contribute to a very special event that we always enjoy verymuch.Thank you URBOND!"

MARTIN BRIGHT, Portsmouth

"URBOND has been very useful for me. They not only offer football on a Wednesday which has helped to keep mehealthy but have also provided some health classes in cancer awareness and diabetes which were very useful aswell. Also, they have various social events which offer good food, good company and help raise money for goodcauses. It has been an enlightening experience being part of the URBOND family and I'm forever grateful."

ANGUS JIJINGI,PhD Student Portsmouth University

"URBOND, what a great community based organisation! I have attended a few events held by the group and havefound them to be innovative, inviting and initiative led by its founders and members. The atmosphere and senseof community cohesion is second to none. One massively distinguished trait I have always found is how the group’s events and help in the community hasalways been deeply embedded with the support and recognition in the role it plays within the local community. The words 'bond' within the organisations name is a fitting tribute to the great work it plays in the present and thefuture towards peace and harmony within the community".
