Builder App Instructions – Updated September 23rd, 2014
Installation 1. To install the FPP file, you must first make sure that you have the latest version of SCENE (5.3.3).
If you do not have the latest version, you may download it here. To check which version you
have, go to Help>About SCENE and read the SCENE Version number.
2. Once you have verified that you have the latest version of SCENE, go to Tools>Apps.
3. In the Apps window, go to Install>App Package, and choose the FPP file given to you.
Activating the App
1. You may be asked to activate the App prior to using it. To do so, click on the unlock icon and
click on the “Activate” button. You will then be asked to enter an evaluation code, as well as a
password/email address in case you lose the code in the future.
2. If you do not have an evaluation code, you may enter your email address in the “Request
evaluation key” field and hit “Send”. You should receive a response within 24 hours with an
evaluation key to use for 7 days. You may also email [email protected]

Running the App 1. It is recommended that you work with the Project Point Cloud or Scan Point Clouds when using
the App. Alternatively you may choose to Load the scans (placing them in RAM). Either way,
they must be visible in the 3D view. *NOTE: Try not to have both Loaded scans and the Project
Point Cloud/Scan Point Cloud activated in the 3D view. This can cause confusion as to which
data set to utilize when performing calculations.
2. Activate 3D view. You can do this two ways:
a. Click on the 3D icon if you have a Project Point Cloud created or have multiple scans
loaded.
b. Alternatively, you may view an individual scan my right-clicking on the scan and
selecting View>3D View.
3. Upon activation of the 3D view, the App toolbar will appear.

Using the drawing tools Click on an icon to activate a drawing tool to create objects within SCENE. You will continue to draw
objects according to which tool is activated, until you select another tool or click on an icon again to de-
activate it.
1. Lines
a. Once activated, you will double click on the first point of the line, then double click on
the second point of the line.
b. You will then be prompted to add a label to this line. You may also leave it blank.
c. Once you finish, you will see the line drawn in the scan, along with the label you
entered. You will also see the length of the line you drew, in feet-inch-fractions.

2. Polylines
a. This tool is similar to the Line command, except that you will double click on the first
point, then double click on your second point, then double click on your third point, and
so on, until you’ve drawn a series of inter-connected lines.
b. Hit ENTER on your keyboard to end the polyline command. You will then be given two
options:
i. Close – This will automatically connect the end of the polyline to where you first
began the polyline
ii. End – This will end the polyline where you finished the command.
c. Similar to the line tool, you will be able to add a label to the polyline, and you will also
automatically be given the overall length of the polyline.
3. Points and Text
a. The point command , when activated, will allow you to double click on an area to
drop a “point” in SCENE, where you can add a text label.
b. The Text command is the same as the point command, except a point is not drawn;
just the text is shown.
4. Curbs
a. The Curb command will allow you to fit an arc to 3 points along a curb.
i. Activate the Curb command, and double-click on the first point along the curb
ii. Double-click on another point ALONG the curb
iii. Double-click on a point at the end of the curb, where the curve ends.

Note: This draws an approximately perfect arc, which may not exactly follow the
true as-built conditions, as real-world conditions contain various construction
tolerances.
5. Undo/Redo
a. If you make a mistake while drawing, you may press CTRL+Z to remove the last drawn
object. Alternatively, you may press CTRL+Y to redo the action you have undone.
Changing the viewing elevation of objects You may notice that all objects drawn within the 3D view using the Survey plug-in will be placed at a
specific height above the point cloud. This is simply to allow viewing of the drawn objects without the
point cloud visually covering it up.
a. To toggle the visual placement of these objects, you may use the visual elevation icon to
toggle between placing the objects at the exact Z elevation you drew them at, and the original
“elevated” locations. Note: all exported objects will be drawn at the exact Z elevation originally
drawn within SCENE, not the elevated location which is purely for visualization purposes.
Using the Layers Everything you draw using the Survey tool will be associated with a layer. You can only change layers
when you are not currently executing a command.
1. Colors can be edited. This will change the colors of all objects within a
given layer.
2. The currently selected layer will be the “active Layer”. Everything drawn will be associated with
the Active Layer. You may switch to another layer by selecting the drop-down menu, and you
may add additional layers.

3. Layer Visibility – This window allows you to hide, unhide, or remove layers. You can select
multiple layers at a time by holding CTRL on your keyboard while selecting layers.
Exporting to the DXF format The Survey tool allows you to easily export all lines, text, points, etc. in their respective colors and layers
into the DXF format for use in your CAD applications.
1. Activate the export tool
2. Choose where you want to export the DWX file and hit “Export”
3. Open the file within your favorite CAD program (AutoCAD, Visual Statement, etc).
Changing Settings You may change various settings that will affect the way your dimensions are shown, such as units and
precision.

Updating
If there is a new version available for the App, you will see a download arrow appear on the very
right side of the toolbar.
a. Click on this icon to automatically download the latest FPP file; the folder where this file has
been downloaded will automatically open for you and be highlighted
b. Before you install this FPP file, you must first uninstall your current version of the Survey App. To
do so, within SCENE you must go to Tools>Apps, and click “remove” next to the Survey App.
c. Once you have removed the old version of the Survey App, you may proceed to install the new
App as previously described.
Frequently Asked Questions 1. Question: My toolbar disappeared. How do I get it back?
Answer: Go to View>Toolbars>Survey to reactivate the toolbar if you accidentally closed it.

2. Question: Why doesn’t the Curb command work?
Answer: Either the MRCinstaller.exe has not been installed, or SCENE is not being run with full
Administrative Privileges.
a. To ensure the MRCinstaller.exe has been installed, download and right click>run this
installer with Administrative Privileges.
b. To ensure SCENE is running with full administrative privileges, right-click on your SCENE
shortcut (either in the start menu, or on your desktop), and go to properties. In the
Compatibility tab, make sure that “Run as Administrator” is checked. If you cannot check
it, click on “Change Settings for All Users” and ensure that “Run as Administrator” is
checked.
