WARNINGSome dust created by power sanding, sawing, grind-ing, drilling, and other construction activities containschemicals known to the State of California to causecancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Someexamples of these chemicals are:

• Lead from lead-based paints.• Crystalline silica from bricks, cement, and other

masonry products.• Arsenic and chromium from chemically treated

lumber.

Your risk from these exposures varies, depending onhow often you do this type of work. To reduce yourexposure to these chemicals: work in a well ventilatedarea, and work with approved safety equipment, suchas those dust masks that are specially designed to fil-ter out microscopic particles.

Grounding

This equipment must begrounded. Verify that anyexisting electrical outletand circuit you intend toplug into is actuallygrounded. Under no cir-cumstances should thegrounding pin from anythree-pronged plug beremoved. Serious injurymay occur.

In the event of an electrical short, groundingreduces the risk of electric shock by providingelectric current a path of least resistance. Thistool is equipped with a power cord having anequipment-grounding conductor. See Figure 1B.The outlet must be properly installed and ground-ed in accordance with all local codes and ordi-nances.

The Model G1061/G1061Z is wired for 110/120V.The 1 H.P. motor will safely draw 10 amps at110V. If you operate this machine on any circuitthat is already close to its capacity, it might blowa fuse or trip a circuit breaker. However, if anunusual load does not exist and a power failurestill occurs, contact a qualified electrician or ourservice department.

A 15 amp dedicated circuit should be used withthis buffer. Always check to see if your currentwires are capable of handling a 15 amp load. Ifyou are unsure, consult the advice of a qualifiedelectrician.

Mounting

The Model G1061/G1061Z weighs approximately59 lbs. Make sure the workbench on which youplan to mount the buffer is sturdy enough to holdthe weight of the machine and any downwardpressure that may be applied during operation. The workbench should have a level surface andbe heavy, or attached to the floor, so it will notmove during operation. To mount the buffer:

1. Pick a spot on the workbench that will allowenough room to move the size of an antici-pated workpiece around the buffer. The oper-ator (and possibly bystanders) should haveenough room to stand out of the way in anemergency.

2. Mount the buffer to the workbench with boltsthat are long enough to exceed the thicknessof your workbench and the buffer base.Secure these bolts with a flat washers, a lockwasher and a hex nut. Because sizes vary foreach individual situation, the hardware in thisstep is not included with the ModelG1061/G1061Z.

3. Mount the buffer in an area with proper light-ing and near electrical outlets. Lightingshould be bright enough to eliminate shadowand prevent eye strain. Electrical circuitsshould be dedicated or large enough to han-dle amperage requirements. Keep power orextension cords clear of high-traffic areas.Observe local electrical codes for properinstallation of new lighting, outlets, or circuits.

The Model G1061/G1061Z is shipped from themanufacturer in a carefully packed carton. If youdiscover the machine is damaged after you havesigned for delivery, immediately call CustomerService for advice.

When you are completely satisfied with the con-dition of your shipment, you should inventory itsparts.

Some metal parts mayhave sharp edges onthem after they areformed. Please examinethe edges of all metalparts before handlingthem. Failure to do socould result in injury.

Make your shop “child safe.”Ensure that your workplaceis inaccessible to childrenby closing and locking allentrances when you areaway. Never allow visitors inyour shop when assembling, adjusting, or operatingequipment.

Using this machine pro-duces sawdust which maycause allergic reactionsand respiratory problems.Use an approved dustmask to protect yourselffrom these hazards!

NOTICEThe following section was designed to giveinstructions on the basic operations of thisbuffer. However, it is in no way comprehen-sive of every buffer application. There aremany different buffing wheels, sandingdrums and attachments available for buffers.WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you readbooks, trade magazines, or get formal train-ing to maximize the potential of yourmachine.

Once mounting is complete and adjustments aredone to your satisfaction, you are ready to testthe machine.

Turn on the power supply at the main panel.Make sure that your hand is poised near theswitch in case there is a problem. The buffershould run smoothly with little or no vibration orrubbing noises. Strange or unnatural noisesshould be investigated and corrected beforeoperating the machine further.

If you cannot easily locate the source of anunusual noise or vibration, feel free to contact ourservice department for help.

Test Run

GeneralThe Model G1061/G1061Z Buffing System isstrictly designed for buffing and sanding opera-tions. IT IS NOT A GRINDER. The absence ofgrinding wheel guards prohibit the use of thismachine as a grinder.

This buffer has a left and right shaft to provide theoption of mounting two different sanding or buffingaccessories, depending on your application. Theconvenience of having two shafts allows you tomount different grits of sandpaper or different tex-tured buffing wheels onto each shaft.

Disconnect power to themachine when perform-ing any maintenance, assembly or adjust-ments. Failure to do thismay result in serious per-sonal injury.

Buffing & PolishingFor buffing and polishing, Grizzly offers a broadline of buffing wheels and polishing compounds. Please refer to our current catalog. To buff or pol-ish:

1. Make sure the power cord is unplugged andremove the 13⁄8" hex nuts at the end of eachshaft. Facing the machine, the left-hand shafthas left-handed threads. The right-hand shafthas right-handed threads.

2. Sandwich an optional buffing wheel betweenthe two wheel flanges provided and slide theassembly onto the shaft. Use only the wheelflanges supplied with this machine. The buff-ing assembly should look similar to Figure 1.

Figure 1. Buffing wheels mounted.

Figure 2. Sanding sleeve overlap direction.

Drum Sanding

To sand using the optional sanding drums:

1. Make sure the power cord is unplugged andremove the 13⁄8" hex nuts at the end of eachshaft.

2. Slide the sanding drum onto the shaft so thatthe valve end is near the end of the shaft andsecure the nut. Wheel flanges are not neces-sary to use with sanding drums.

3. Slide the sanding sleeve onto the drum.Ensure that the arrows on the inside of thesleeve point in the direction of the drum rota-tion. If there are no arrows inside the sleeve, slide the sleeve onto the drum so that theoverlap is positioned correctly in relation tothe drum rotation as shown in Figure 2.

Sanding Sleeve

Never sand or buff with the workpiece ontop of the wheel. The workpiece may becatch the wheel and be thrown at the oper-ator. Always process the workpiece nearthe bottom of the wheel!

5. Start the buffer and with both hands firmlygrasp the item to be polished. Lightly andevenly move the workpiece back and forth onthe buffing wheel. Be careful when polishingplated metals; there is a chance that the thinplated material may be damaged. A lightpressure is all that is needed for quality work.

3. Tighten the hex nut while holding the shaftwith your other hand. The direction of thethreads and motor rotation ensure that thenuts on both sides will not self loosen.

4. Select the appropriate stick of polishing com-pound for your application and apply to therotating face of the wheel. Always wear safe-ty glasses because particles of polishingcompound or buffing wheel may fly off.

Accessory Removal

To remove the buffing or sanding attachments, ensure that the switch is pushed in and the powercord is disconnected. With buffing wheels mount-ed, hold the shaft with one hand while looseningthe nut with a wrench. If both shafts are con-cealed by sanding drums, use a wrench to loosenthe desired nut while holding onto the sandingdrum. If the drum slips while loosening the nut, hold onto the opposite sanding drum. Remember, the left-hand nut and shaft have left-handedthreads.

Figure 4 shows the loosening/tightening proce-dure for buffing wheels. Figure 5 shows the loos-ening/tightening procedure for sanding drums.

4. Inflate the drum using a bicycle pump or aircompressor. The maximum air pressure is 10psi. DO NOT OVER-INFLATE! We recom-mend against filling the drum with an air com-pressor. When sanding drums have beeninstalled, the assembly should look similar toFigure 3.

5. Pull out on the switch to turn the machine onand firmly grasp the workpiece to be sanded.

6. With light and even pressure against thedirection of rotation, move the workpieceback and forth on the sanding drum. Sand inthe direction of the wood grain. Always wearsafety glasses and a dust mask.
