Mede Yem emigrated to the United States at 10 years old from a refugee camp in Thailand. Education was always at the forefront for the Yem family. Both of Mede’s parents were teachers in the refugee camp in Thailand. Transitioning to the United States was not easy because of the different language, customs, and lifestyles here in American. As a first-generation college student, Mede credits her academic success to the support she received from her “second family”, the EOP program. Mede was a regular face in the Academic Center for Excellence and credits Lori Woods for helping her transition to college as an English language learner. She met with her EOP counselor weekly to assist with her transition to

college and to make sure she was doing all she could to be successful. Mede will graduate with her Bachelor’s in Childhood Education with a 3.54 major GPA. Kolawole Glover Memorial Scholarship Kolawole “Tommy” Glover was a junior majoring in Computer Information Systems when he passed away as the result of a car accident in February of 2001. A scholarship was created in his name to recognize a student who reflects his passion for learning. While attending Buffalo State, Kolawole was a sought-after resource in the North Wing computer lab and the EOP computer lab, which is now named in his honor. He was a leader on campus, active in the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), the African American Student Organization (AASO), the Caribbean Student Organization (CSO), and Adelante Estudiantes Latinos (AEL). The name Kolawole means “to bring together.” Thus, the scholarship named in his honor is awarded to an individual who reflects the best of both campus involvement and academic success. This scholarship is co-sponsored by EOP and the Association of Faculty and Staff of Color.

Jean Brito is a resident of Bronx, New York Jean and has a GPA of 3.87. He made the Dean's List at Buffalo State and was accepted into the Honors program. Jean is majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Economics and Finance. He quickly acclimated to our campus culture and is an active member of Buffalo State and EOP. Jean is a Residential Assistant for Bishop Hall, an honors residential building for exceptional scholars. He is a senator for USG, an organization that serves the needs and wishes of the student body, while having the responsibility of planning out events around campus. He recently took part in EOP advocacy efforts to travel to Albany to meet with legislators to advocate for funding for EOP and the TAP gap. He has assisted in many campus and community service projects such as the

Bengals Day of Caring project. Jean's extracurricular activities include being a Global Potential member in which he participated in an organization that focuses on children who lived in third world countries. Jean tutored peers to look at the world with inquisitive eyes. He joined the Debate Team his senior year of high school which emphasized improving his impromptu speaking, developing excellent communication skills, learning how to think, analyze and address a topic with little preparation time. Jean was raised by a single mother with four children in a small and cramped apartment, which in Jean's words "made me want to start the race last and finish it first." With the help of EOP, Jean has refused to settle for the superficial understanding, decline the obvious explanation and refuse to accept the negativity of people around him. He questions everything and strives off the information given to him. He continues to strive for opportunities that would make his previous achievement look mediocre. He recently represented and participated in the Model Senate Session Program in Albany, New York.

Martha Pierce Student Recognition Award This award acknowledges the academic achievements of a non-traditional junior or senior with a 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA who has prevailed as an above-average student amidst difficult circumstances, such as health concerns, raising children, or juggling employment with academics. The award is named in honor of Martha Pierce, who is recognized as the first SEEK/EOP graduate in New York State. Ms. Pierce entered Buffalo State as an adult student in 1967 and graduated in just seven semesters with a degree in elementary education. She then taught in the Buffalo Public School system for more than 20 years. She is known for speaking on behalf of funding for EOP before the joint legislature in Albany, where she received a standing ovation.

Maryann Maldonado is a junior majoring in Psychology and minoring in Art Therapy. She began her journey at Buffalo State with attending the EOP Transfer Student Academy, she then committed to participating in the EOP “We the pEOPle” Transfer Student Learning Community. During Maryann’s first semester she was able to achieve a 3.75 grade point average with challenging courses. In her time at Buffalo State, Maryann has exhibited self-less character with going above and beyond to check in on and assist a number of her peers. Maryann is employed. She is a wife and a mother. One of her children has special needs which comes with compounded responsibilities for her as a mother. She is constantly

pulled in many directions but remains steadfast to her goals with a pleasant disposition. By prioritizing her goals and focusing on academics as well as her personal life, Maryann Maldonado has established herself successfully at Buffalo State. Theresa A. Shepard Advocacy Award The Advocacy Award is given to an individual or organization that has shown commitment to EOP through outstanding support and service. The award has been renamed in honor of EOP student Theresa Shepard, who passed away unexpectedly in December of 2001. Theresa earned a bachelor's degree in computer information systems and a master's degree in educational computing. She was employed by the Computing and Technology Services Department and was well known throughout the campus community. Theresa spoke out on behalf of funding for EOP, both in the Buffalo community and on campus. She was admired and respected for her work ethic and her dedication to academic success.

She is an advocate for the program and participates in our annual EOP/EOC Advocacy Day where she meets with legislators and senators to share the impact the program has had on her life. In addition, she has served as a first-year and academic mentor, and participated in our EOP Women's Empowerment group. She is currently interning at the Charter School for Applied

Technologies where she works with students in grades K-3 and facilitates a program called Primary Project; an intervention program that helps children with mild to moderate school adjustment concerns. Her future plans include working with children and starting a non-profit organization for young women focused on self-care, hygiene, sex education, and self-love. Jazmine is a role model to many of our students and connects with her EOP counselor and her EOP family on a regular basis. She is always willing to assist and extend a hand and is a true advocate for the Educational Opportunity Program at Buffalo State. Arthur O. Eve Distinguished Student Achievement Award This award was established to honor former Deputy Speaker Arthur 0. Eve, who established the first SEEK/EOP program in the SUNY system at Buffalo State in 1967. Her passion for keeping community safe has inspired her to continue her graduate work in Criminal Justice. Her commitment to empowering others to succeed has led her to becoming a Student Assistant and Student Resident Director for the EOP Freshman

Summer Academy; a summer bridge program that helps incoming students successfully transition to college. She often serves as a mentor, guide, and support for other students and campus leaders. Oshina has been very involved on campus and has served in multiple capacities for the Caribbean Student Organization. As President, she led a series of community events that allowed students to celebrate their culture and brought awareness to pressing social issues in the college and surrounding community. Oshina is an exemplary leader and continues to push for greatness while bringing others along with her. In the Fall 2020 she will be starting her master’s program in Criminal Justice at Buffalo State and pursue her dream of becoming an FBI agent. EOP Director’s Award The Director's Award recognizes a junior or senior with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA who has demonstrated leadership, dedication, and service through involvement with both EOP and campus organizations.

Diana Delmonte Bido is a first-generation student at Buffalo State College pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Social Work

HONORABLE

ARTHUR O. EVE

During Eve's first term as an assemblyman, he led the effort to obtain an initial

$500,000 ($3.8 million as of 2020) of funding to establish the State University of

New York system's SEEK/Educational Opportunity Program. Since the 1970s,

colleges in New York State have administered the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education

Opportunity Program to assist students who may otherwise be unable to attend

college because of educational and financial circumstances. Later, in 1988,

he would received the Kennedy Center Distinguished Leadership in Arts-in-Education

Award.

A leading champion of educational, economic, and social equality, the

Honorable Arthur O. Eve served the Buffalo community and all of New York

state with great distinction. Today, he continues to enrich and inspire our

communities through his ongoing leadership, dedication, and vision.

I THOUGHT I’D AWAKEN TO

A WORLD IN MOURNING

Heavy clouds crowding, a society storming.

But there's something different on this golden morning.

Something magical in the sunlight, wide and warming.

I see a dad with a stroller taking a jog.

Across the street, a bright-eyed girl chases her dog.

A grandma on a porch fingers her rosaries.

She grins as her young neighbor brings her groceries.

While we might feel small, separate, and all alone,

Our people have never been more closely tethered.

The question isn't if we will weather this unknown,

But how we will weather this unknown together.

So on this meaningful morn, we mourn and we mend.

Like light, we can't be broken, even when we bend.

As one, we will defeat both despair and disease.

We stand with healthcare heroes and all employees;

With families, libraries, schools, waiters, artists;

Businesses, restaurants, and hospitals hit hardest.

We ignite not in the light, but in lack thereof,

For it is in loss that we truly learn to love.

In this chaos, we will discover clarity.

In suffering, we must find solidarity.

For it's our grief that gives us our gratitude,

Shows us how to find hope, if we ever lose it.

So ensure that this ache wasn't endured in vain:

Do not ignore the pain. Give it purpose. Use it.

Read children's books, dance alone to DJ music.

Know that this distance will make our hearts grow fonder.

From a wave of woes our world will emerge stronger.

We'll observe how the burdens braved by humankind

Are also the moments that make us humans kind;

Let every dawn find us courageous, brought closer;

Heeding the light before the fight is over.

When this ends, we'll smile sweetly, finally seeing

In testing times, we became the best of beings.

Keith “Tai” Johnston arrived at Buffalo State in the Summer of 2016 as a non-traditional student. At the age

of 23, Keith decided he wanted more from life and that included a college degree. It wasn’t long before Keith

made his mark on campus. Keith had a fashion style all his own and didn’t care to follow the flock. As a

Fashion and Textile Technology major, he was a stand out. He quickly became involved in organizations on

campus, first with the NAACP for which he eventually served as Vice-President. Recently, Keith helped

restart AAMEN on campus where he was President. His involvement to support all campus organizations

ran deep. Keith frequented many general interests’ meetings where he again pushed limits by his thoughtful

and caring debates. He raised the consciousness of his fellow students by often playing devil’s advocate.

Although his conversational debates were challenging the views or ideas of others, he did it with such grace

that students could do nothing but have respect for him.

Keith touched every life that he encountered on our campus and especially my life. He was a regular in the

EOP offices and was loved by all. He was kind, thoughtful and showed an incredible level of respect for

everyone. We spent hours in my office having meaningful conversation, laughing, and planning his future.

His laughter and smile could light up any room. He was wise beyond his years and lived a life most of us

wouldn’t have survived. He had so many dreams and goals to still achieve. I gave him all the support I could

but also gave him tough love when he needed it. He always listened and understood that I loved him and had

his back. Rest in Peace King. You are loved and missed by all who knew you.
