“ Rarely has an orchestra sounded so purely beautiful in sound, balance and clarity. Falletta, who has been at the helm of that band for nearly 15 years, has beyond a solid regional presence and, with recordings and tours, turned it into a truly international one.”

Renowned artist Dale Chihuly has created a spectacular set design with his artwork, and sets the stage for JoAnn Falletta to lead the BPO in Bela Bartók’s one act opera, Bluebeard’s Castle.Based on a folk legend about the mysterious nobleman, Bluebeard, and his new bride Judith, the tale begins as the newlyweds arrive at Bluebeard’s gloomy, dank castle. The piece turns into a psychological thriller as Judith discovers seven locked doors and demands to see what is behind them. As the doors are opened and Bluebeard’s dark secrets are revealed, Judith discovers that there is much more to her new husband than meets the eye.Chihuly’s sculptures provide a dramatic visual element as they are revealed one by one. See glass blowing demonstrations with Corning Museum of Glass, and an exhibit of glasswork by local glass artists and area students.

With the assistance of curators from the Albright Knox Art Gallery, the BPO will bring to life Mussorgsky’s famous Pictures at an Exhibition. This iconic piece commemorates the composer’s friendship with artist and architect Viktor hartmann, whose death shook Russia’s art world. Mussorgsky was inspired to memorialize him in music that depicts an imaginary tour of an art collection.
