Pre-Arranged Absences
When it is necessary for a student to be absent from school, and this is known in advance, the
Attendance office must receive prior notification according to the following procedures in order
for the absence to be excused:
A parent/guardian should notify the Attendance office prior to the date of the absence,
indicating the reason for the absence and its duration.
If the absence is for more than ten school days or more, the student/parents must follow the
steps below:
Obtain a pre-arranged absence form from the Attendance Office for all of their teachers to sign.
They must also speak with their Dean to initiate the extended absence procedure. The
extended absence procedure includes a letter to the student’s parents, which indicates the
conditions placed on the student academically due to the absences, which will include the
number of days the student has to complete the missed work. A parent signature is needed in
order for the absences to be excused.
*Only under extenuating circumstances will a student be allowed to take rescheduled semester
exams. Authorization must be obtained through the Associate Principal’s office (Mr. Hartwig
only. Parents must submit written request at least four weeks prior to semester exams.)

ACADEMIC RESOURCES
LITERACY LAB Lit Lab is home to 180 student tutors, various content teachers, and teacher
assistants over the course of the day. It is a resource that helps guide student
growth in every single content area offered with the assistance of knowledgeable,
helpful individuals. Which ever subject a student may need help with, there is
more than likely a highly qualified teacher or student tutor available to sit down
and chat with. Often times students come down for help on their homework, quiz
corrections, or to review for tests and quizzes. The Lit Lab is open before school
every single day at 7:15am as well as every single period during the day. Students
do not need an appointment or special invite to use the Lit Lab. They can simply
drop in and staff will match them up with a teacher or tutor that fits their need.
SATURDAY SCHOOL Saturday School is a service provided by Buffalo Grove High School to help
students raise a grade, make up missing work due to absences, or just find a quiet

SUPPORT GROUPS
A variety of support groups may be offered to our students in order to assist with
specific issues and/or problems that may be interfering with success in high
school. Each group meets once a week, rotating periods 1-8, for 6 weeks or
longer. Groups are subject to change due to the needs of the students, which is
assessed on a regular basis. Below are some of the groups with a brief
description. If you know of someone who would benefit from a particular group,
please list their name/ group and turn it into a counselor/social worker or school
psychologist. A facilitator of the group will screen all students for the group.
Choices Group: A psycho-educational group for teens who are in need of support
and guidance in developing a greater sense of self esteem, making healthy
decisions as well as in developing healthy relationships throughout high school
and beyond.
Managing Anxiety: A group intended for adolescents of any age/gender who have
struggled with managing symptoms of anxiety that have significantly impacted
other areas of academic and social functioning. Focus will be placed on providing

family member, or friend. The group focuses on educating students about the
stages of grief and the symptoms related to grief. They are able to share their
personal stories of loss in a supportive environment and process through the
feelings that they are having.
Post-Hospitalization: This group is for students that are transitioning out of
inpatient, partial, and intensive outpatient programs. It teaches stress
management, mindfulness, relaxation, and other coping skills. Transitioning back
into the school setting is also covered.

situations that teens go through in high school. From negative peer interactions,
motivation issues, self esteem, coping skills, future goals, bullying, and peer
pressure are among the topics covered. There will be psycho-educational
activities as well as discussions on high school struggles.

This course is generally taken during sophomore or junior year. Students
