MUSIC FESTIVAL 2018This will be our 14th Festival but for some of you reading our brochure, this will be your first, and I’d like to say a particularly warm welcome to you.

Our founder, Roger Bowen, has told me that his original idea was for a Festival along the lines of the Cheltenham Festival. His wish was to bring to his friends in Budleigh Salterton, particularly those now less able to get to London or elsewhere, first-class musicians to play here, by the sea. As it became clear there was a desire for other aspects of culture, then the Literary Festival was founded and now thrives. Equally for less classical tastes, a separate Jazz Festival has grown up. But the Budleigh Music Festival continues Roger’s original aspiration of bringing classical music to the Jurassic Coast.

This year we continue with a range of artists – both those who are glad to return and those who are new to Budleigh. Our outstanding young soloists include not only cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, BBC Young Musician of the Year 2016, and his pianist sister Isata, but also Sunwook Kim, winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition 2006, not to mention violinist Alina Ibragimova with the Chiaroscuro Quartet and, in contrast on our last night, Jess Gillam, saxophonist, with friends on piano and double bass. I always look forward to the Festival Orchestra programme which includes Britten and the Haydn Cello Concerto; and this year we have in addition the Festival Wind Ensemble on our opening night; and a horn trio from Vienna. No Festival would be complete without the human voice and we’re pleased to welcome Apollo 5.

Many of you enjoy our free lunchtime concerts. These focus on artists from the South West, including the Devon County Senior Choir, a brass duo from Sidmouth and a harpist from Bovey Tracey. Styles of music will vary from classical, to folk and 1930s Music Deco - something for everyone.

Our thanks go to our Friends and Sponsors, without whose generous support we could not run the Festival. Please see page 18 for details. Thanks also, as ever, to St Peter’s and the Temple Methodist Church for use of their facilities; and to the wider Budleigh community, including shops and restaurants, for their ongoing support. Last, but not least, my thanks go to my wonderful team of volunteer helpers!

Best wishes and see you in July, Jean Quinn (Chairman)

A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Overture, Op.21 Mendelssohn

Cello Concerto in C Haydn

Simple Symphony Britten

Symphony No.1, Op.21 Beethoven

The Festival Orchestra presents a programme featuring the brilliant young cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, and there is also a youthful thread connecting the different works. Haydn’s Cello Concerto was written near the beginning of his career and Beethoven was twenty-nine when he wrote his First Symphony, Mendelssohn was just seventeen when he wrote his Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture and Britten twenty when he wrote his Simple Symphony, based on themes written between the ages of nine and twelve.

[Sheku Kanneh-Mason] ‘…technically superb and eloquent in his expressivity, he held the capacity audience spellbound with an interpretation of exceptional authority.’ (The Guardian)

London-based Sunwook Kim came to international recognition when he won the prestigious Leeds Piano Competition in 2006 aged just eighteen, becoming the competition’s youngest winner for forty years as well as the first Asian winner. Since then he has established a reputation as one of the finest pianists of his generation, appearing as a recitalist as well as a concerto soloist with some of the world’s leading orchestras.

‘Surely destined to be known as one of the greats to have emerged from the Leeds International Piano Competition, Kim was more expressive in tone and phrasing – impassioned and graceful, thrusting and rhapsodically introverted in turn.’ (Mike Allan, The News, Portsmouth)

Kevin Hurst is based in Budleigh Salterton where he teaches clarinet, piano and saxophone. He is an instrumental tutor at the University of Exeter. He conducts the East Devon Clarinet Choir and has been guest coach to county youth music ensembles and clarinet choirs. Kevin has given master classes at festivals and colleges and has enjoyed a career as a professional clarinettist, giving highly-acclaimed recitals nationwide and abroad.

Chris is currently Director of Music at St Peter’s Preparatory School, Lympstone.

LUNCHTIMECONCERTS

Schola Exe, the County Senior Choir, was formed in 2012 as a natural extension of the Devon County Junior Choir. The choir, for girls aged 13 - 18 and boys with unchanged voices, aims to give young people the opportunity to continue to develop their vocal skills and experiences and particularly to introduce the singers to major choral works in the repertoire.

The choir was established by Rachel Smith, who also founded the Devon County Junior Choir. Rachel is Head of Junior Music at The Maynard School, Exeter and was formerly Assistant Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral School. Rachel is Musical Director of both the Chivenor and Lympstone Military Wives Choirs.

Saturday 21st July 2018 at 12noonTemple Methodist Church MUSIC DECOMusic Deco is a trio comprising vocalist Kate Walker and her talented musical colleagues, Andrew Daldorph, piano and Chris Gradwell, saxophone and clarinet.

Our final lunchtime concert!

LUNCHTIMECONCERTS

The trio delights in the rhythm, romance and evocative style of that most exciting time of popular music, the 1920s - 1940s. Conjuring the very essence of the Deco Period and providing a performance of not just jazz or light music, but some of each, with a little comedy and smoky night club atmosphere thrown in as well.

Think of Bix Beiderbeck, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington and Noel Coward and other familiar names from those decades and expect songs full of wit and humour. Music Deco delights in variety, performing some instantly recognisable and some less familiar music.

Adam Heron was born in Hong Kong in 1999. At the age of seven he was awarded a scholarship to join Gloucester Cathedral Choir. From 2012 until 2017 he studied piano at Wells Cathedral School. Adam is currently a scholar at the Royal Academy of Music. Recently he was awarded first prize at the Junior Intercollegiate Beethoven Competition, held in London.

He gained the titles of both Gloucestershire Young Musician 2016 and Taunton Young Musician 2016, and is a laureate of the Young Pianist of the North International Piano Competition in Newcastle. Adam has performed at The Cheltenham Music Festival, The Elgar Room and The Bath Pump Rooms, where he showcased his own compositions for violin and piano.

LUNCHTIMECONCERTS

Esther Beyer began playing the harp at the age of six. She is now in her second year at The Royal Academy of Music, studying under the tutelage of Karen Vaughan, where she was recently commended in the 2017 Guy Macgrath Harp Prize. Esther has played in many major venues across the UK, including the Royal Albert Hall and Birmingham Symphony Hall. Solo highlights include playing for HRH Duchess of Cornwall on the Royal Harp at Clarence House.

Growing up in Devon, Esther has freelanced with local orchestras such as the Torbay Symphony Orchestra and the Plymouth University Orchestra, and has won local festivals and competitions in Devon and Somerset.

Emily Loftus began her classical training at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music (2012-2014) and is now in her fourth year on the BMus Performance course at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (2014-2018), under the tutelage of Scott Johnson and Patricia MacMahon. Emily is the daughter of the owners of ‘Vanilla Sky’ (Budleigh delicatessen).

Stephen Rankin, a concert flautist from Northern Ireland, is currently studying for a BMus at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow. He has performed in many productions including the RCS Symphony and Concerto Orchestras as well as their production of ‘Die Fledermaus’. Stephen has had opportunities to participate in masterclasses with many world- renowned flautists including Sir James Galway.
