PERSPECTIVES

Just 30 minutesPeople do not need to spare so much time for

doing exercise to obtain maximum benefits.Generally, an adult may need just about 30minutes of moderate exercise no less than fivedays a week as physical activity will make himfeel better, gain extra energy and enjoylongevity.

To be healthy, a person needs regularexercise because physical activity can help himmaintain a healthy weight an important factorfor today’s desk-bound people. According tomedical surveys, exercise can prevent dreadfuldiseases such as diabetes, hypertension, somecancers and heart problems. What’s more, people who are leading an active life live longerand happier.

The main point here is that a person needs tofind the most suitable exercise for him. Normally, brisk walking, hiking or even stair-climbing arekind of exercises he can do without any difficulty. He can also choose dancing, swimming orgardening and there are other options such asjogging, running, bicycling and rowing. He canalso join with his friends in team sports likesoccer, volleyball and sepak takraw or go to afitness centre.

If a person wants to lose more weight or hasa definite objective, he may need to do exercisemore. But the amount of physical activity heneeds to do every day is fixed by his own age. Hecan also take some advice from his family doctoror other physician to choose the best exercisefor him and the amount of time and activity heneeds.

Another bonanza is exercise and physicalactivity can provide an opportunity to relax, enjoy the open-air and natural scenery or spendan enjoyable time.

A day has 1,440 minutes and a person needsonly 30 of them to enjoy all the benefits ofphysical activity.

Health reforms in China makegains, but many out of pocket

BEIJING , 4 March — Efforts in China to widen access tomedical care and improve health insurance have madeimpressive headway, but 173 million Chinese still face“catastrophic” health expenses, researchers reported onFriday. The reforms were initiated in 2003 after liberalizationled to the introduction of medical fees and opened updisparities between city and countryside, leaving manywith spiralling health costs and worsening care.

The research, conductedby the Centre for Sleep andCircadian Neurobiology atthe University ofPennsylvania, insteadfocused on asking largenumbers of randomly selectedpeople about their sleep. Oxygen envelops Saturn’s icy moon

According to co-authorAndrew Coates of UniversityCollege London, Dione hasno liquid water and so doesnot have the conditions tosupport life. Instrumentson board the unmanned probedetected a thin layer of oxygenaround the moon, so thin thatscientists prefer to call it an“exosphere” rather than anatmosphere.

But the discovery isimportant because it suggeststhere is a process at workaround the solar system’s gasgiants, Saturn and Jupiter, inwhich oxygen is released fromtheir icy satellites. It seemsthat highly charged particlesfrom the planets’ powerfulradiation belts split the waterin the ice into hydrogen andoxygen. Dione’s sister moon,Enceladus is thought toharbour a liquid ocean belowits icy surface. The same isthought to be true of Europa,Callisto and Ganymede which

orbit Jupiter.Prof Coates is among a

group of scientists lobbyingthe European SpaceAgency to send an orbiterto explore Jupiter’s icymoons — known as theJuice mission. “These arefascinating places to lookfor signs of life,” he said. Asis Titan, Saturn’s largestsatellite. Its nitrogen andmethane atmosphere isreminiscent of the earlyEarth, according to ProfCoates.

Hacked school board election names drunken robot the winnerin Washington DC

WASHINGTON , 4 March— Traditional votingsystems are typicallyexpensive and require agreat deal of manpower toimplement.

Because of this, technology firms havebegun proposing electronicalternatives (e-voting) thatcould one day beimplemented in nationalraces — however, securityexperts remain hesitant. When Washington DCrecently flipped the switchon a new e-voting optionthat it planned to use to tallyabsentee ballots for localelections, the experts’ pointwas proven: a fictional, beer-guzzling robot was electedas the head of the DC school

board.Before using the new

online voting program for areal race, the DC election boardposed a world-wide challengeto anyone who thought theycould crack the system. Ateam of computer experts fromthe University of Michiganquickly pried the digital gates

wide open and began tosnoop around. This was aidedby the fact that the engineerswho set up the supposedlybullet-proof used the word“admin” as both the usernameand password of the serversholding the electioninformation.

The team was preparedfor this, and managed to blockall others from accessing thedata that they were workinghard to alter. In addition toscavenging the authenti-cation data for everyregistered DC voter on a simplePDF file (the most worrisomeof all the discoveries), the teamwas also able to erase the dataon every single legitimate voteand replace it with fictionalcharacters. New potato-spotting AI builtwith off-the-shelf tech

The system is taught by a human expert to spotdamaged and diseased potatoes.— INTERNET

LONDON , 4 March — A“learning” computer systemthat sorts potatoes has beenbuilt using off-the-shelftechnology by researchers atthe University of Lincoln’sRobotics Lab. The robotblemish spotter can reliablyidentify diseases such as silverscurf and common scab, researchers said. The testsystem uses computer kit notdissimilar from systems manygamers will have in theirhomes. The UK potatoindustry is worth about £3.5bn,but much of the sorting ofproduce is still done by hand.TADD — or the TrainableAnomaly Detection andDiagnosis system — is able to“detect, identify and quantifymany of the common blemishesaffecting potatoes”, Dr Tom

Duckett of the University ofLincoln told the BBC. Thekey innovation, in MrDuckett’s view, is thelearning software which istrained by a human expert toidentify diseased ordamaged produce. “Existingcomputer vision systemshave to be programmed andcalibrated. Our system isdifferent it learns from somesamples provided from ahuman expert,” he said.TADD is only a visionsystem at present, but justspotting an off-colour spudis harder than it sounds.

“When potatoes gettoo much light they tend togo green, but in red potatovarieties greening looksmore black,” said MrDuckett. But becauseTADD uses artificialintelligence (AI) systems, itcan be trained to deal withdifferent varieties.

until the end of the season.A statement on the club’s website read:

“Unfortunately the results and performances of

the team have not been good enough and were showing nosigns of improving at a key time in the season.

“The club is still competing in the latter stages of theUEFA Champions League and the FA Cup, as well aschallenging for a top-four spot in the Premier League, andwe aim to remain as competitive as possible on all fronts.

“With that in mind, we felt our only option was to makea change at this time.”

Chelsea are facing two tough games in theFA Cup and Champions League over the next 10days.

They visit Championship side Birminghamfor an FA Cup fifth-round replay on Tuesday andthe following week they must overturn a 3-1deficit against Italian side Napoli at StamfordBridge to avoid exiting the Champions Leagueat the last 16 stage.

Villas-Boas won the Portuguese League andCup double plus the Europa League whilst incharge at Porto but appeared to have a difficultworking relationship with senior players atChelsea.

Nicolas Anelka and Alex left the club early

in his reign and after FrankLampard was left out of theteam he said playing underVillas-Boas had “not beenideal.”

Graphene has been heralded as a revolutionarymaterial and is used in touch screen

technology.— INTERNET

Graphene ‘could pose healthrisk’ to workers

EDINBURGH , 4 March—People involved in making amaterial used to enhance computer and phone touch screenscould be at risk of lung damage, according to new research.Scientists at the University of Edinburgh have been studyingthe behaviour of the so-called miracle material, graphene. They say, when produced in a certain form, the ultra-thincarbon contains tiny particles known as nanoplatelets. Thesecan lodge in the lungs and may cause health problems, thestudy found.

Graphene, first identified in 2004, has been hailed arevolutionary material and heralded for its superconductiveproperties. The flexibility of these disc-shaped particles, known as nanoplatelets, allows them to be readilyincorporated into plastic and rubber, giving them new anduseful properties. They can also be used to enhance theelectronic properties of touch screens.

The Edinburgh scientists found that the nanoplatelets, which are invisible to the naked eye, behave like tiny frisbeesand stay airborne. But the researchers said their aerodynamicproperties also mean that when inhaled, they can find theirway deeper into the lungs compared with other forms ofgraphene. The scientists said the particles could accumulatein the lungs and cause damage.

This could potentially affect the health of peopleinvolved in manufacturing and handling graphene-basednanoplatelets. Prof Ken Donaldson, chair of respiratorytoxicology at the university, said.—Internet
