I remember driv- ing him around to various veteri- narians, ending up at the VCA Bay Area Veterinary Specialists in San Leandro. He recovered somewhat, but we had to give him subcutane- ous fluids every day, which I found to be very difficult and very stress- ful. Several times I had to drive him to the vet (sometimes as far as San Leandro) for help. He finally passed away right before Labor Day Weekend. I was glad that his suffering was over, but very sad to lose him. I still hold sadness deep inside – reliving the experi- ence as I wrote the above passage brought some of it back – in fact, I am not sure that I have fully felt it, even now, almost a year later. But now it is Obon time again. We need to remember that Obon refers to several things: the dance (Bon Odori), the festival, and the service. Although here in the Unit- ed States they sometimes get sepa- rated, we are fortunate in Oakland to do them together on the same weekend. If your family is observ- ing Hatsubon – the first Obon service since your family member passed away – then, like me with Sapphire, you may still be feeling sadness and loss. And yet, we are also reminded of the deeper Joy and Gratitude, expressing it in the Obon Dance and Festival. We may also express it with a lantern, either lighting a candle during the Hatsu- bon Service or having a tag hung from one of the lanterns surround- ing the Obon Dance. So please join us for our Obon Festival and Dance on Saturday, August 2 and Obon Service on Sunday, August 3. At 9:30 AM will be our Hatsubon Service, for those families who have lost a loved one during this past year. At 10:30 AM we will have our Obon Service, which is open to everyone. Our guest speaker will be Rev. Yasuo Izumi from the Buddhist Temple of Southern Alberta, Canada. I have known Rev. Izumi since my stu- dent days in Japan, and I am very happy to be able to invite him to our temple. Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to listen to the Dharma! In gassho, Rev. Last year I missed our Obon Fes-tival because my cat Sapphire

became very sick. I remember driv-ing him around to various veteri-narians, ending up at the VCA Bay Area Veterinary Specialists in San Leandro. He recovered somewhat, but we had to give him subcutane-ous fl uids every day, which I found to be very diffi cult and very stress-ful. Several times I had to drive him to the vet (sometimes as far as San Leandro) for help.He fi nally passed away right before Labor Day Weekend. I was glad that his suffering was over, but very sad to lose him. I still hold sadness deep inside – reliving the experi-ence as I wrote the above passage brought some of it back – in fact, I am not sure that I have fully felt it, even now, almost a year later.

But now it is Obon time again. We need to remember that Obon refers to several things: the dance (Bon Odori), the festival, and the service. Although here in the Unit-ed States they sometimes get sepa-rated, we are fortunate in Oakland to do them together on the same weekend. If your family is observ-ing Hatsubon – the fi rst Obon service since your family member

BUSSHIN AUGUST 2014

On a personal note, I’d like to thank all those

who worked so hard to make the Bazaar a success. In addi-tion to the OBWA & Church members, I would also like to thank non-church members who participated, including Theresa Jackson (Linda Min-amoto’s sister), Val Nishimu-ra, Arlene Hashimoto, and Alan Hirahara, to name just a few.

The June OBWA meeting was cancelled due to low at-tendance (6).

The July OBWA meeting is scheduled for Sunday, July 6.

What a month June was! Of course, our big fundraiser

took place during Father’s Day weekend. We experienced large crowds and great weather. The fi -nal numbers aren’t in yet but it appears that we had another suc-cessful year. Thanks to all our very generous donors and all of you who came out to help. I know that you might think I’m biased but really, BCO’s food is the BEST. I loved our new addition of the teriyaki short ribs; they were delicious (of course, Michael Endo’s secret teri-yaki sauce had a lot to do with it). A special thanks to Robert Nogu-chi, Chair of the Festival, Jon Tak-agaki, Co-Chair and all the Chair-persons of the various commitees.

I want to especially thank my sister, Teresa Jackson. Many of you had the opportunity to meet her. I roped her into: helping to make the kurimanju, helping with the food preparations on the Friday before the bazaar, working a shift at the bazaar (along with her hus-band, Neil), and helping with the cleanup on the Tuesday after the bazaar. A couple of people said that we should make her an honorary member of BCO. Since she is not

Buddhist, I thought it might be a little awkward. Regardless, she did enjoy helping out and plans to help us in the future.

Our next big event is our an-nual church picnic at Kennedy Grove on July 20. Ron Nomura has graciously chaired this event for a number of years. We serve hot dogs, hamburgers, chili, and po-tato salad. Besides games for the children, adults can participate in the water balloon toss which is al-ways entertaining. Come out and join us.

Our Obon Festival is August 2. Food preparation will take place on Friday, August 1. I encourage you to come out if you have time. It is fun to work with the others, you can learn new things, and there are jobs that don’t require great skill. For instance, I am not good with knives so I placed the cut takuan on the storage trays; it can’t get any easier than that! Any amount of time is appreciated; even a couple of hours is helpful.

I hope all of you are enjoying the summer.

In gassho,Linda Minamoto

Message from our PresidentBY LINDA MINAMOTO

Please Be Careful…

The police department has reported that there have recently been several robberies at gunpoint in the church’s neighborhood. These

have taken place between 8 am and 9 am. This is a reminder to always be vigilant when you come to church no matter what time of day or night. Pay attention to your surroundings and do not be distracted by things like talking on your cell phone.

Newsroom OBWABY KAREN HASHIMOTO

Greetings from the Jr. YBA. June has been a very active month

for us. Earlier in the month, the Jr. YBA worked in the Nikkoland Bazaar and took shifts for various booths. Thanks to all the members who participated and especially Kiyomi Nomura for co-chairing shaved ice with me.

More recently, the Jr. YBA took part in multiple activities, including a BCO trip to Shadow Cliffs Recre-ational Park and a Bay District trip to Great America, to fi nish the year on a high note. Thanks to everyone who planned and ensured the suc-cess of these two trips. Finally, we hope to see you all at the Obon Fes-tival on August 2nd.

BUSSHIN AUGUST 2014

Due to the injury sustained by Jean Nakazono, the Momiji

kai has not planned any outside activities for the time being, as she is our leader. However, we will be meeting on Thursdays, July 3rd and July 17th per usual. When avail-able, Rev. Bridge will lead us with the opening service. Patti Hirota will also be leading the group in our regular Yoga classes on those dates.

At this time, Jean, we are so

sorry to hear of your injury and our thoughts are with you, hoping you are not in too much pain. We are praying for your full recovery soon. Please do take care and come back so we can resume our normal activ-ities. In the meantime, we do hope to see everyone at the meets. Bring your knitting or any other projects you may be working on. See you all soon.

BUSSHIN AUGUST 2014

I want to personally thank every-one for all their hard work and

dedication for the 2014 Nikkoland Festival, held last month. From preliminary fi gures received, over-all sales exceeded last year’s sales, with several areas registering sharp increases. With the work done over the past year, and new procedures put into place, we’ll be able to ob-tain a more accurate cost analysis for each individual area, and work on improving others. It was a fabu-lous event, and many thanks for all your efforts!

This year marked some major changes, including:• Changed the name to “Festival” and continued to highlight our udon bowl logo.• Added new dinner item – teriyaki short ribs- which attracted lots of excitement and we received very positive comments.• Expanded our beverage selections to include Sapporo beer and bottled premium sake.• Streamlined sushi and udon sales from same station.

• New Festival banners made for the front of the church, with festi-val dates with Velcro for easy up-dating year to year (thanks to Jay Kaneshige for his design talent and expertise).

Unfortunately, due to my acci-dent Saturday afternoon, I was un-able to be present for most of the event. Many thanks to those who fi lled in and took over my responsi-bilities during my absence.

I want to thank the Festival Committee for all their hard work in coordinating their areas, and to all the organizations for coordinating their volunteers. I wish to express special thanks to Earl Utosurogi for his generous donation of the hamburger and hot dog buns and to Chris Neishi for the beautiful pot-ted fl owers for the fl ower shop.

Best wishes for a terrifi c summer and I look forward to seeing every-one at the Picnic and Obon Festival.
