The Bateman Brothers band faith-

trumpet is as close to the sound of Louis as you will ever hear. Brother

Ian’s trombone produces the sounds of

Louis most famous trombonists, Trummy Young and Jack Teagarden

Bob Dwyer’s Bix and Pieces is

one of London’s most versatile swinging traditional jazz bands for

listening and dancing to. Trombon-ists Bob dwyer leads a collection of

top jazzmen who have played to-

gether since the band was formed in 2010.

New Orleans Heat is a seven piece

band playing Old style New Orleans jazz recreating the music of the crescent city.

Playing in the style of Bunk Johnson, George Lewis and Kid Thomas bands.

Their motto is “helping to keep the real

jazz alive”

Richard Leach’s Seven Stars of Jazz are

old favourites of the Bude jazz festival play-ing in the style of the Alex Welsh band. Not

a tribute band but a band that plays with a similar energy and skill plus the ability to

entertain an audience with a variety of mu-

sical styles.

George Huxley’s All Star Jazz Band

Well known for many years as a fine clarinettist, soprano and alto saxophonist. George is much in demand in the UK,

Europe and the USA. His soaring soprano evokes memories of the legendary Sidney Bechet with whom he has often

been compared.

As well as the All Star Jazz Band he also fronts Reeds United together with John Maddocks.

Helen Rimmer Quartet

This is the quartet's third time at the festival. A step away from trad, (with a bit thrown in!), they've always had a great response to a broad range of classic standards. From soulful ballads through blues to driving up-beat toe-tappers, expect a swinging set of on the but-ton ensemble playing and accomplished solos. This year, they're de-lighted to be joined by John Hallam (saxes/clarinet).

The Sunset Cafe Stompers Play traditional jazz in the style of the New Orleans pioneers. Led by pianist Mike Den-ham, the band is noted for its wide and interesting repertoire which includes num-bers made famous by pianist/bandleaders including Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller and Fats Domino. The band takes its name from the famous night-spot on Chicago's South Side, owned by Al Ca-pone, where Louis Armstrongs once played.

Original Rags Pianist Mike Denham and trumpeter Steve Graham (who doubles on mandolin) together with vocalist Hamish Max-well. Mike and Steve are well-known to Bude audiences. Hamish is a singer in the mould of Big Joe Turner, and is

reminiscent of the great George Melly. He cut his teeth in the skiffle era at the Festival Hall, and has since performed with many stars of the international music scene. Expect to hear the music of Louis Armstrong, Bix Biederbecke, Big Joe Turner, Fats Waller, Scott Joplin, even Bessie Smith!

Roger Wells’ Dixie Hotshots The Hotshots were formed 3 years ago, when Roger Wells chose a group of very experienced musicians to join him. The band plays a mix-ture of Dixieland and New Orleans music. Be-tween them the individual members have played at numerous jazz clubs and festivals, throughout the country, however, these days most of there gigs are in and around the West Country. The Globe Hotel on Friday

Amy Roberts and Richard Exall

Two of the most exciting and versatile musicians on the jazz scene today, appear on Wednesday at B.E.D. and

the Golf Club with the talented Craig Milverton trio.

The Sussex Jazz Kings.

Dave Stradwick, the well known player of hot, traditional jazz trumpet leads his

“Jazz Kings” who enjoy a high level of popularity on the British jazz scene. The

Jazz Kings are without doubt some of

the best exponents of this jazz style playing today.

The Jake Leg Jug Band

Bringing you the authentic sounds of 1920's and 30's America - Jazz, Blues, Gospel, Ragtime - with their own twist on it. Songs of murder, betrayal, gam-bling, liquor and redemption. Signed to one of the UK's most prestigious Jazz labels ‘Lake Records’ they record their albums as part of the 'Vintage Recording Project' essentially recording all live around ribbon microphones, as it would have been back in the 1930’s.

Swing Fever The combination of two reed players works well and has sounded great throughout the recorded history of jazz and swing music. One only has to think of the the wonderful saxo-phone duets of the likes of Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster to understand the popularity of the format. For the Bude Festi-val Chris Walker has teamed up with fellow reed player Mike Snelling to bring you a first class selection of foot tapping, memorable melodies from the swing era, all backed by the su-

perb rhythm section of Craig Miverton—piano, Tony Mann—Bass and Colin Larn— drums.

Remi Harris Trio Remi Harris is regarded by many as one of the UK's Top Up and Coming Young Jazz Guitarists and has toured the UK, Australia, France, Norway and Italy as well as performing at Buckingham Palace, the Royal Albert Hall, Live on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 3. His unique style blends elements from Gypsy Swing, Jazz,

Blues, Rock'n'Roll, Hip Hop and World Music. Remi was awarded runner up in the Rising Star Category

and his band was runner up in the Small Group Category of the 2015 British Jazz Awards. The Remi

Harris Trio is in Bude on Tuesday and Wednesday

are all about! Their show is crammed full of classic Swing,

Jive, Boogie and Blues arrangements of songs from the 40’s, 50’s and early 60's. Hit tunes from the stars of the

day: Louis Jordan, Louis Prima and Cab Calloway;

Wynonie Harris, Big Joe Turner and Ray Charles; Infec-tious rhythms that won't let your feet stay still and will

have you sliding on to the dance floor as soon as you hear the first note!

Jeremy Huggett’s Dart Valley Stompers

sic in the Traditional and New Orleans styles of jazz. The front line features Jeremy Huggett on tenor sax,

soprano sax, clarinet & vocals, Graham Trevarton on

trumpet & vocals, and Ron Milford on trombone & vo-cals. The hard-driving rhythm section includes Howard

Williams on banjo & guitar, John Fellows on double bass and Jools Aldridge on drums.

The Pete Allen Jazz Band

Formed in 1978 this fully professional entertaining band led by Honorary Citizen of New Orleans Pete Allen, contin-

ues to perform at concerts and festival throughout the UK and abroad. Pete has released over 100 albums to date.

The bands repertoire includes a varied selection of tradi-

tional jazz classics presented in a slick entertaining show of instrumentals and songs with special tributes to Louis

Armstrong and Sidney Bechet featuring seven of this countries most talented and respected jazz musicians.

The Great Western Jazz Company was formed ten years ago, and with an eclectic repertoire, from Armstrong and Bechet through Goodman and Shaw to Van Morrison and Zawinul, it has en-deared itself to West Country audiences. They are happy to adapt any tune that they feel would fit in their repertoire,

Des Bacon's Red Hot Syncopators Des’ arrangements of classic 1920s and '30s jazz and popular music have made the Synco-pators very special. Every band member is an enthusiast too, so every note that's played and sung is absolutely period-correct. The band perfectly expresses the wide range of style and sentiment within the genre, and the addition of authentic vocalist Ed Hughes com-plements a superb combination of the sweet, the hot, the well-remembered and the seldom-recalled. A rare treat.

Sonic Jazz Project is a jazz quintet from Cornwall who have played an array of venues and events including St Ives Jazz Club, Looe Music Festival, Calstock Arts, Lusty Glaze and Fowey Royal Regatta. Sonia has sung at Ronnie Scott's with Renato D'Aiello, Steve Rose and Christian Vaughan, and the band has been played on BBC Introducing (BBC Radio Corn-wall). Their first EP features arrangements of well-loved jazz standards including 'Cheek to Cheek', 'Feelin' Good' and 'A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square'. Expect an evening of up-lifting and toe-tapping, jazz, swing and blues.

Just Misbehavin' play an infectious

brand of swing jazz that's perfect for dancing or just sitting back and enjoy-ing. Their singer, Lynn Thornton, de-lights audiences with her skilful inter-pretation of songs both familiar and unexpected. The band bring a depth of musical talent with Ric White on saxes and flute, Paul Barnham on pi-ano, Mike Thorn on string bass and Ted Draper on drums. A good time is guaranteed.

Sheila Fawkes & the Guys have appeared at Keswick,

Kirkcudbright, Pershore and last year at Bude. Their first album was sited by Just Jazz magazine as “candidate for

jazz record of the year” The Guys are all top jazz musicians (see line-up in the band lists). The music has some favour-

ites as well as little played numbers from the 20’s and 30’s.

Sheila’s stage presence fronting such a great band guaran-tees a performance not to be missed.

John Maddocks Jazzmen

Now in its 43rd year the band is as popular as ever. Al-though there have been various changes of personnel

over the years the overall sound and drive of the band remains the same. This is down to John’s leadership

and personal playing style, which although still based

on Dodds has matured into his own sound incorporating many of the great New Orleans clarinet players.

Roger Marks Cornish Armada

Formed May 2008, Roger’s newest band has proved to be immensely popular playing to full

houses almost everywhere they go. A band packed out with personality and infectious bon-

homie, nevertheless produces some very fine

New Orleans jazz from its hugely experienced and talented musicians.

Roger Marks Brass Farthings

is a four-piece “good time” traditional jazz band. formed to

meet the demand from smaller venues such as restaurants

and public houses.
