CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICE: DECEMBER 24, 2001 Bong! Bong! Bong! went the bell of BCUMC on Christmas Eve, welcoming us as we approached the church that evening. Inside the sanctuary, the poinsettias were grouped together on the altar looking bright and happy, just as those folks gathering in the pews were happy to be here to celebrate Christ's birth together. The Christmas Eve services were led by District Superintendent Michelle Cobb and liturgist Ruth Davidson. We expressed our happiness at celebrating Christ's birth by first singing "Joy to the World!" This was followed by DS Cobb and Ruth Davidson giving The Bidding Prayer*. Then we shared the words of the Lord's Prayer together, followed by a blessing by DS Cobb: "The almighty God bless us with divine grace, Christ give us the joys of everlasting life, and unto the fellowship of the citizens above may the King of Angels bring us all. Amen." The Germain family came forward and lit the advent candles. This was followed by Ruth Davidson lighting the Christ Candle. (The Christ Candle reminds us that Jesus is the light of the world.) Then it was a Christmas Eve festival of 7 lessons and carols. Nancy Schnepp began the set of lessons with Genesis 3:8-15, 17-19. This was followed by the singing of the Christmas carol "Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus". Tim Schnepp read the 2nd lesson from Genesis 22:15-18 and we sang "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel". Mindy Jester was the reader for the 3rd lesson taken from Isaiah 9:2, 6-7. The neglected "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming" was our next song. This was followed by Ruth Davidson giving the 4th lesson from Isaiah 11:1-4a, 6-9, which led into our singing "O Little Town of Bethlehem". Ralph Rohrer gave an expressive reading of Luke 1:26-35, 38. Then we were treated to very special music by Anita Davidson singing "Angels We Have Heard on High" accompanied by her daughter Ali on the clarinet. We heard this song in a whole new way. It was wonderfully performed. Our sixth lesson was given by Ryan Davidson and was from Luke 2:1-7. We then sang that comfortable old favorite "The First Noel". The final lesson was read

by Tom Davidson from John 1:1-14. He then introduced more special music. This time the magnificent voice of young Megan Mohler made this Christmas Eve service complete, as she sang "Christmas Auld Lang Syne". DS Cobb lit a candle from the Christ candle, and came into the congregation to share the flame. As the light of Christ spread through the sanctuary, going from candle to candle, our voices lifted to sing "Silent Night, Holy Night". DS Cobb dismissed us with the blessing: "You have the light of Christ. Go out into the world of darkness and share it." Thanks Be to God. Helpers for Christmas Eve services: Mindy Jester (organist), Kiersten Davidson (acolyte), Carol Shepard (greeter), Kyle Schnepp (bell ringer and greeter). 106 attended.

*THE BIDDING PRAYER Beloved in Christ, this day it is our duty and delight to prepare ourselves to hear again the message of the angels, and to go in heart and mind to Bethlehem, and see this thing which has come to pass, and the Babe, lying in the manger. Therefore let us hear again from Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of God from the first days until the glorious redemption brought us by this holy Child; and let us make this house of prayer glad with our carols of praise. But first, because this of all things would rejoice Jesus' heart, let us pray to him for the needs of the whole world, and all his people; for peace upon the earth he came to save, for love and unity within the one Church he did build; for goodwill among all peoples. And particularly at this time let us remember the poor, the cold, the hungry, the oppressed; the sick and those who mourn, the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children; and all who know not our Lord Jesus, or who love him not, or who by sin have grieved his heart of love. Lastly let us remember all those who rejoice with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude who no one can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom, in this Lord Jesus, we for evermore are one. These prayers and praises let us humbly offer up to the throne of heaven, in the words that Christ himself has taught us...

UM NEWS TIDBITS United Methodists in the church's Holston Annual Conference have gathered more than 100,000 pairs of shoes to help Afghan refugees. "I'll sleep a lot better this Christmas season, knowing we did something tangible for people in such need," said Ray Chamberlain, bishop of the Holston Conference. Volunteers throughout the conference, working Dec. 14-15, collected shoes as well as financial donations for children and adults living in impoverished conditions in Afghan refugee camps. The shoes were delivered to two churches in Abingdon, Va., and Knoxville, Tenn., for overseas shipment by Stop Hunger Now, a relief ministry based in Raleigh, N.C.

402 bicycles arrived in Cuba in mid-December, courtesy of World Methodist Evangelism, a Nashville, Tennessee based unit of the World Methodist Council. The Rev. H. Eddie Fox, who heads the program, led a fund-raising effort after visiting Cuba in May and learning of the need. Green Chinese bikes that can carry a

passenger and 16-speed mountain bikes in a rainbow hue were purchased with donated funds of $40,000. In Cuba, a country where most people cannot afford a car, missionary pastors needed a way to reach the people. "A pastor on foot can go to one mission. One with a

bicycle can go to two or three missions", said Bishop Ricardo Pereira Diaz of the Methodist Church in Cuba. "Those bicycles are like a seed, a seed that will bear much fruit, and we will have many missions as a result of that." In a country with about 600,000 worshiping

Christians among a population of 11 million, those bicycles have a lot of miles to travel. Fox wants to return to Cuba someday and check on the bikes. "When we come back, we hope the tires have been worn down," he said. "We want those bikes to be on the move."

President George W. Bush has been named Layman of the Year by Good News magazine, which features the country's most well-known United Methodist in its January/February cover story. The magazine's editorial team cited Bush's leadership in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States. "Few political leaders have been required to respond to such traumatic and virtue as has this president." The magazine is published by the Good News organization, an unofficial United Methodist evangelical group based in Wilmore, Ky.

SOME HOLY HUMOR TOP TEN: There was a lady mailing an old family bible to her brother in another part of the country. "Is there anything breakable in here?" asked the postal clerk. "Only the Ten Commandments" answered the lady. ENLIGHTENED: A little boy forgot his lines in a Sunday School program. His mother, sitting in the front row, prompted him, gesturing and forming the words silently with her lips: "I am the light of the world", Understanding, the child beamed and with great feeling and a loud, clear voice said, "My mother is the light of the world!" NO GRACE: A 5 year old boy was sitting down to eat when his mother asked him to say grace. He replied, "Mom we don't have to. We prayed over this last night." His mother was serving leftovers! AUTHOR AUTHOR! Little Johnny had bought Grandma a book for her birthday and wanted to write a suitable inscription. He racked his brain until suddenly he remembered that his father had a book with an inscription he was very proud of, so he decided to copy it. You can imagine Grandma's surprise when she opened her book, a Bible, and found neatly inscribed the following phrase: "To Grandma, with the compliments of the author."

10 HELPFUL HINTS FOR SAVING CAMPBELL'S SOUP LABELS 1. Buy only those soups you really like---that way you will eat them faster and you'll get more labels quicker! 2. Cut the labels off BEFORE opening the soup. This avoids icky labels!

3. Use a letter opener or nail file to get that label off. Once it's under the label you can pop the whole thing right off. 4. Stock up on recipes* using canned soup! Then put the soups needed on your grocery list. 5. Bring soup casseroles, etc. to church dinners. SOMEone will eat it. 6. Create a new recipe of your own using whatever soup you have left in your cabinet. (Check the expiration date!) OR cut off that label and mark the kind of soup on the can and/or

throw away the old soup! 7. Have a special spot in the kitchen you keep those ready to turn in labels. OR put them right into your purse or out in the car you will be driving to church. 8. Remember that other products made by Campbell's are eligible to turn in too. Pepperidge Farm frozen items, Swanson broth, V8 Juice, gravies, etc. 9. Have a soup party. Everyone brings a can of soup and you dump them all in one big pot. Make sure and have a LOT of crackers for this, and very small bowls. 10. Give this list to your friends and relatives and ask them to save labels too!

FROM THE PASTOR. . . It slipped right on by didn't it. January. One-twelfth of this year is gone. And February begins a new season for the Christian. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which this year is February 13. This is a time of renewal for the Christian. It is a time for us to turn ourselves around -- seek forgiveness of our sins and renew our relationship with Christ. If you have never before taken Lent seriously, I urge you to do so this year. Get in touch with the Spirit of God. We have no excuse really. God comes to us in the winter in the form of a brand new baby. Pure and spotless. Once that's all put away, we tend to forget about the Holiness of Christ. Lent brings us face to face with Holiness once again. God is still working. He offers us an opportunity to deal with ourselves -- warts and all. We can face tomorrow, because now the manger is empty and the world is full of God's Spirit. Let's get excited about the love, forgiveness and awesomeness of God. YES!

TIME CAPSULE This month our time capsule goes forward into time, with a letter to future generations. A Letter to my great-great-great-great grandchildren: I can imagine you are beautiful children. Maybe you have brown hair or hazel eyes. Or perhaps you have one ear bigger than the other. Is your second toe longer than the others? Do you have nice long fingers and size nine ring finger? Then you got these from me. Does the sun make you sneeze? I can't imagine the world you live in. Did you have appendicitis as I did? How do they treat it in your time---do you take a pill or do the doctors simply aim a special laser at your abdomen to dissolve it? Has Earth become a plastic planet? Are you living in a plastic house? Do paper money and coins still exist or are they only in museums? Do you do all your banking by computer or have computers been replaced with something we never dreamed of in our time? I hope there are still things in your world that bring you joy. I hope your family unit is a happy and loving one. I hope your air is clean and your water fresh. May there be no wars or hunger on your Earth. Have you discovered if time travel is really possible? (Come visit me!) Is "I Love Lucy" still in reruns? (One of my favorites.) Might there be anything of mine that was passed down to you? A piece of my green depression glass or a piece of jewelry? My Bible or some snapshots? A recipe? I imagine my paper collectibles are very yellowed and crumbling by now---or has a way been found to better preserve them? Are they sealed in some futuristic plastic cube? What foods are you eating? I hope its not just a food pill 3 times a day! I hope you are taken with gardening as my husband---your great-great-great-great grandfather was. I'll bet there are varieties of vegetables we have not imagined in our time. Are you raising strawberries? I hope you have my shortcake recipe. Do you have a greenhouse? I do pray that cancer and our other dreaded diseases and ailments have been eliminated. This so you never have to experience what you would consider barbaric treatments from our time. I sit and wonder what jobs you may have. Has your work week been shortened or lengthened? Or does everyone work from home now? Are they able to control the weather yet or is that still God's job? I am curious to know if a woman has yet been elected President of the US. Have flying cars come into reality?

Does anyone still know how to drive or are cars programmed to take you to your destination while you read or sleep? I'll bet traveling by air has really changed too. Has California fell into the ocean yet? Did global warming happen or don't you know what that is? I have too many questions! Maybe you have questions about me. Perhaps you will see an old clipping of my obituary. You should know that I loved Jesus, cats, baking, my family, traveling with my husband, and my church at Buck Creek, Indiana. Is it your church now?? Please take care of it as we have before you. It was your ancestors who helped to build it in 1908. Do you ever drive by the house where we lived? I hope at least the trees your great-great-great-great grandpa planted are still growing. I'm sure the sycamore and the oak tree should still be there. Are any of the old schools still standing? I hope they are not empty and abandoned. Did they finally build another high school nearer Buck Creek? God bless you, my great-great-great-great grandchildren. May you and all the generations of our family be healthy and happy and know Jesus. Know that I love you. Think of me. Your great-great-great-great grandmother, Nancy (written January 25, 2000)

THANKS FOR THE SOCKS This letter was received at BCUMC regarding the “SOCK-IT-TO-THEM” drive late last year: Dear Friends: Your gift of socks has been received and is certainly appreciated. The boys and girls who come to the Home all have serious problems. Many have been made to feel they are worthless. Our goal is to help each child to learn they are a person of value capable of living a productive, Christian life. Thank you for helping to make this opportunity available. We wish for you and the members of your family the very best of this Christmas season.

Sincerely, Gary J. Davis, ACSW Executive Director
