4.6. Disciplines Registration of a dance in a respective discipline is to ensure that the dance is judged “with its own

kind”; in other words the dance is evaluated based on the characteristics of the particular discipline.

To ensure impartial scoring, the trained and qualified jury will judge the dances based on specific

criteria. The individual dances will be compared to the others in the same disciple and category. The

dance style is crucial in assigning the dance number to a disciple.

Balet Classical ballet techniques danced in ballet slippers or pointe shoes. It is possible to dance original

choreography as well as parts of well-known pieces. The jury places extra value on proper technique and

especially attitude. The emotion of ballet must be conveyed and represented in the technique, posture,

and stage presence. Pointe is allowed beginning in the Junior 1 age-group, which means the dancer must

be at least 12.5 years old (in all categories).

Contemporary/Modern It is important that the various modern styles, for example Graham, Limon, Horton, Cunningham or

Chladek, to name a few, are incorporated in these dance numbers. In addition, contemporary and neo-

classical movements are permitted. Above all, contemporary/modern dance is not disco dancing.

Lyrical Lyrical is a dance style that combines elements of ballet, modern and jazz dance techniques. It is inspired

by the lyrics and the musical content. Lyrical dance challenges choreographers and dancers to use

motion to interpret music and express emotion. A lyrical dancer’s movements attempt to show the

meaning of the music.

Jazz Dance There are various jazz-styles which are permitted – classical Jazz, Broadway Jazz, Lyrical Jazz or Latin

Jazz. Main features include isolation movements (polycentric) parallelism, contractions, collapse,

coordination, impulses and the danceablility at different levels.

goes over, or under, the time beyond the lenience limits there will be reduction of 20 points.

5. Scoring System 5.1. Criteria

- Technical content: (meaning the difficulty level and number of dance technical elements)

- Choreography and overall impression: (this means the composition, the synchron of the chosen music,

dance steps and elements, the age of the dancer, the utilization of stage, thne dress, etc.)

- Presentation: (this means the level of presentation, the dynamics and the personality transmitted to

the audience)

5.2. Principles of Adjudication The BDF adjudication system is a combined system. Besides, there will be also a short written note made

about each dance in dance disciplines. Each dance is adjudged always by at least tree judges on the basis

of scoring criteria.

Each items of those above are valued by each jury member on a scale ranging from 0 to 10. Then, the

three points are summarized, and according to the rank formed by the summarized points, the jury

members give their placement numbers as follows (e.g. a category with 6 dancers for the adjudication

sheet of one of the jury members):

Jury member „A”

Start no.: 217 188 160 102 70 11

Technical content: 8 7 9 8 6 10

Choreography: 7 8 8 7 5 9

Presentation: 9 6 6 10 7 10

Total: 24 21 23 25 18 29

Placement: 3rd 5th 4th 2nd 6th 1st

5.3. Methods and Proceedings of Adjudication For the preliminaries and the semi-final rounds, the so-called X (cross) system is used. This means that

after the judges gave their points for the three values as described above, in accordance with the rank

indicated by the summarized point values, they issue the X-es and /-es as possible for the given

category. E.g., for a category with 15 dancers (semi-final) six (6) crosses and two (2) half-crosses may be

issued. The number value of one cross is ten (10) point, the number value of a half-cross is one (1) point.

The six/seven competitors getting the highest results will get into the final (seven in case of

mathematical equality which is possible on the sixth position).

In the final rounds, the skating rank calculation system is used. This means, that the majority of the

decisions by the judges will set the results achieved by the dance piece.

names and marks of the jury members, respectively. The correct data input from the adjudication sheet

is supervised by one of the festival officials, namely the festival office head. The adjudication sheets and

the calculation may be asked to be seen by the dancer/club representatives from the festival office

5.4. Jury Members The jury members should be highly respected because of their competence and hard work needing

intensive attention during the whole event. No dancer neither any other participant may disturb the jury

member during work. Any remarks or disrespect against a jury member will be penalized by the

always be organized similarly as an evening dance gala in a theatre, beginning at a previously announced

hour at least half an hour after the end of the previous rounds (suggested beginning is 19.00). The time

schedule should be compiled to complete the finals latest till 22.30.

IT IS A GENERAL RULE THAT THE SAME CATEGORY SHOULD ALWAYS BE ADJUDICATED BY THE SAME

JURY ALSO IN THE DIFFERENT ROUNDS, EXCEPT FOR THE CASE OF VIS MAIOR.

7. Formalities and Celebrations 7.1. Opening Ceremonies

Each BDF international event should be opened with an official opening ceremony. Such ceremony

should include the welcome speech of the local organizers, the presentation of international

participants with their national symbols (flags), the presentation of international jury members, and the

opening speech of the highest post BDF official being present on the event.

The official opening ceremony should be organized to have a maximum duration of 20 minutes. In case

of an international event consisting of more than one day, there should be an international reception

banquet with buffet and discussion on the evening before the first festival day, and an international

farewell cocktail/banquet after the last day’s awards presentation with free discussions.

7.2. National Symbols On the BDF international events, the national flags of each participant BDF members nations and BDF

logo should be placed to a well observable place. During the International Dance Festival, the hymns of

the nations participating should also be listened to once on the beginning of the awards presentation.

The participating nations are obliged to bring their national flags (2 pcs.) and their national hymns (1 CD)

with them and hand such over to the local organizer during their registration at least one hour before

the official Opening ceremony. The organizer gives such national symbols back latest half an hour after

the end of the official closing ceremony.

7.3. Official Closing Ceremony It is not obligatory to have a closing ceremony. However, on the International Dance Competition which

is considered to be the highest level event within the concerned calendar year on the field of dances

there should always be an Official Closing Ceremony including the official thanks, congratulations,

closing speech and a gala of no more than 15 minutes altogether.

8. Time Frames The festival program should always be made in such a manner to provide for at least 8 hours of rest for

the dancers between the festival days. It is not allowable to have festivals including awards presentation

after midnight, neither to have riser presentations or awards presentations after 10.30 PM.

As a general rule, the festivals are commenced mostly with riser categories to avoid the minor-aged

dancers’ late presentations. If possible, an awards’ presentation ceremony should also be organized

during the event – possibly in the form of theatre break – for the risers, if most of their presentations
