CSU is looking to snap a three-game losing streak following two narrow losses to North Florida and an encouragingly close setback at undefeated and No. 24 Furman. Clemson, which was ranked as high as No. 16 several weeks ago, has dropped three of five since a 5-0 start. e Tigers have played their last two games without the ACC’s fourth-leading scorer in Marcquise Reed, who sprained his knee in a win over Saint Peter’s. TOUGH SHOOTING NIGHT UNDOES SOLID DEFENSE AT UNF - CSU forced 27 turnovers, tallied 18 steals and grabbed 18 offensive rebounds en route to taking 25 more shots than North Florida on Saturday. e Bucs were held to just 29 percent shooting, though, including 25 percent in the second half. CSU led 26-24 at halſtime but UNF staged a 15-3 run out of intermission to take control, and held off the Bucs’ rally attempts from there. SHULER GOES OFF FOR CAREER HIGH - Dontrell Shuler poured in a career-high 20 points to give CSU some much-needed punch off the bench at UNF. Shuler made a bevy of plays off the dribble and got to the free-throw line ten times, converting eight. Many of CSU’s returners singled out Shuler as a newcomer poised to make an impact during the pre- season, and he is thus far living up to that billing. He’s scored in double figures five times and has proven efficient, shootinng 46 percent overall. TURNOVERS GALORE - CSU currently ranks second nationally in forced turnovers, causing 21.3 per game. Only Florida International has forced more. e Bucs have created 99 turnovers in their four wins, and have forced 20 or more in half their games. CSU is also 5th with a +6.0 turnover margin and tenth in steals (9.7). It was very active in that depart- ment a year ago, ranking 17th in turnovers forced while pacing the Big South Conference in turnover margin. LEXANDER LEADING BUCS’ FRESHMEN CLASS - Duncan LeXander has quickly emerged as one of the Big South’s top freshmen. LeXander is CSU’s leading rebounder and second-leading scorer, and ranks among league leaders in offensive rebounds (3rd), threes made (7th) and rebounding (8th). He has scored in double figures in five of his last six games, and is averaging 13 points and 6.7 rebounds over that time. LeXander is also shoot- ing 55 percent (17-31) from downtown during that span. BUSKEY MUCH IMPROVED OFFENSIVELY - Deontaye Buskey’s 13 points against Furman marked his fiſth double-figure scoring effort of the season. He did so just once in 29 games as a freshman. Buskey’s three threes against the Paladins give him 13 for the year, which is one more than all of last season. He was 12-for-40 (30%) from downtown last year, but is already 14-for-38 (37%) this year. BUCS’ PERSONNEL Pos. Name Yr. BUC NOTESKEELING CONTINUES ASCENT IN RECORD BOOK - Christian Keeling has already jumped from 21st to 17th on CSU’s career scoring chart this season, and needs just ten points to take over sole possession of 16th place and 17 for 15th. He is only 95 from entering the top ten. The junior ranks among Big South leaders in scoring (4th), assists (4th), free-throw percentage (4th), steals (8th), blocks (T-9th), minutes (10th) and rebounding (12th). STILL A YOUNG GROUP - Twelve of CSU’s 15 players are underclassmen, with seven freshmen and five sophomores. Travis McConico is the Bucs’ lone senior. Last year, along-side Keeling, freshmen Phlandrous Fleming Jr., Jones, Deontaye Buskey and Sean Price helped lead CSU’s final-month turnaround.THE THREE-BALL - CSU currently ranks 88th nationally with 8.9 three-point field goals per game. CSU sunk ten triples against Furman, marking the fourth time its hit ten or more. CSU made ten or more threes only five times last season, and ranked 9th (second-to-last) in the league in threes made and three-point percentage. CSU was one of the most prolific three-point shooting teams in the country from 2012-13 to 2014-15, ranking top-11 nation-ally in made and attempted triples each year.KEELING RECORDS TRIPLE-DOUBLE - Keeling posted the second triple-double in CSU history with a 20-point, 12-assist, 11-rebound effort against Coppin State. He is one of only 15 Division I players to achieve the feat this season. Keeling’s 12 assists shattered his previ-ous career high of five. The only other triple double in CSU history was turned in by Tony Fairley (12 points, 22 assists, 10 steals) on Feb. 9, 1987. LEXANDER AND BUSKEY BREAK OUT VS. COPPIN STATE - LeXander (23 points) and Buskey (20 points) each set new career scoring highs in the Coppin State win. The duo combined for 33 points in the first half to help CSU build a 46-28 halftime lead. Overall, they combined to go 10-for-16 from three-point range. LeXander buried his first five treys and finished 6-for-7 from downtown. Buskey finished 4-for-9 from distance. KEELING’S HEROICS NEARLY PRODUCE COMEBACK AT MT - Keeling poured in 29 second half points to spearhead a spirited Charleston Southern rally that fell just short in a 76-73 loss to Middle Tennessee. Keeling matched a career high with 33 points and nearly willed the Bucs back from a 21-point hole with 18 points over the final 8:59. BUCS SPRINT BY S.C. STATE - CSU shot 50 percent from the floor, placed five players in double figures and forced 20 turnovers to down S.C. State, 89-72. The Bucs led for 35:02 of game time and by as many as 22 points to avenge last December’s overtime loss to the Bull-dogs. CSU was +20 in points off turnovers and +15 from the three-point line to coast despite allowing S.C. State to shoot 53 percent.FINISHING ON A HIGH NOTE - Charleston Southern was 2-7 and tied for last place at the halfway mark of Big South Conference play last season but staged a remarkable turn-around to finish 9-9 and tied for fifth. CSU and regular season champion UNC Asheville, at 7-2, shared the league’s best record during the back half of league play. The Bucs’ only losses in that stretch came by a combined seven points - by two at Gardner-Webb and by five in overtime to Asheville.IMPACT FRESHMEN CLASS NOW SOPHOMORES - Along with Keeling, Fleming, Jones, Buskey and Price were integral to CSU’s success in February. Fleming led the group on his way to finishing as runner-up for Big South Freshman of the Year honors. He ranked second among all league freshmen in scoring, and led all league rookies and tied for 11th overall in steals. Fleming capped the regular season in style, tallying a career-high 26 points to lead CSU to its first win at Winthrop since 2002. Last summer, he won a gold medal with Athletes in Action’s Team USA squad at the FISU/Pan Am Games in Brazil. OFFENSIVE TRANSFORMATION - Much improved offensive production fueled CSU’s surge last season. The Bucs averaged 74.5 points per game and shot 46.3 percent overall and 37.5 percent (75-200) from three-point range over their last eleven games. During its 2-7 start to league play, CSU averaged just 62.4 points per game while shooting 39.5 percent overall and 28 percent (58-206)from downtown. ALL-TIME CSU GREAT ARLON HARPER JOINS STAFF - Arlon Harper, a 2015 CSU graduate, is in his first season as an assistant coach. Harper is the fifth-leading scorer in pro-gram history. He is one of only four players in Big South history with over 1,500 points, 450 rebounds, 250 assists and 225 steals. Harper helped CSU reach the NIT in 2013 and 2015.

Notes• Finishing on a high note: Charleston Southern was 2-7 and tied for last place at the halfway mark of Big

South Conference play but staged a remarkable turnaround to finish 9-9 and tied for fifth. CSU and regular season champion UNC Asheville, at 7-2, shared the league’s best record during the back half of league play. The Bucs’ only losses in that stretch came by a combined seven points - by two at Gardner-Webb and by five in overtime to Asheville.

• Keeling back for junior year: Christian Keeling returns to lead CSU after becoming just the fifth player in Big South history to reach 1,000 career points as a sophomore. Keeling earned All-Big South Second Team honors while ranking second in the conference in scoring, sixth in steals, seventh in minutes played, eighth in free-throw percentage and tenth in rebounding. He was the centerpiece of CSU’s late surge, averaging 19.3 PPG and 5.5 RPG over the year’s final 11 games. Keeling paced CSU in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and minutes.

• Impact freshmen class now sophomores: Along with Keeling, freshmen Phlandrous Fleming Jr., Ty Jones, Deontaye Buskey and Sean Price were integral to CSU’s success in February.

• Radebaugh at the helm: Barclay Radebaugh enters his 14th season and is CSU’s all-time winningest head coach. Radebaugh directed CSU to NIT bids in 2012-13 and 2014-15. Joining Radebaugh on the Bucs’ staff are Rick Duckett, Thomas Butters and former CSU great Arlon Harper. Duckett’s defensive acumen helped CSU rank 17th nationally in forced turnovers last season. Butters is in his fifth season with the Bucs, and second as an assistant coach. Harper was added to the staff in June, bringing him back to the program he starred at from 2011-15. Harper is CSU’s fifth all-time leading scorer, and ranks second in program history and tenth in Big South annals in steals.

Notes of Interest• Led by reigning Big South Head Coach of the Year Mike Jones, reigning All-Big South First Team pick Ed

Polite Jr. and reigning Big South Freshman of the Year Carlik Jones, Radford was installed as the league’s con-sensus preseason favorite. The Highlanders won 22 games last season en route to the program’s first NCAA Tournament berth since 2009. CSU was one of just two teams to beat Radford on its home floor a year ago.

• Hampton and USC Upstate join the league from the MEAC and Atlantic Sun, respectively. The Pirates have advanced to postseason play each of the last five seasons, highlighted by NCAA Tournament trips in 2015 and 2016. The Spartans struggled to a 22-loss campaign a year ago, but are led by first-year head coach Dave Dickerson and feature preseason All-Big South guard Deion Holmes.

• In addition to the two new programs, High Point, Longwood, and UNC Asheville give the Big South three more new head coaches. Tubby Smith, who most notably led Kentucky to the 1998 national championship, takes over at his alma mater following two seasons at Memphis. Former UMBC assistant Griff Aldrich takes over at Longwood, while former CSU assistant Mike Morrell looks to keep Asheville among the Big South’s top programs after serving on Shaka Smart’s staff at Texas.

Barclay RADEBAUGH14th Season at Charleston Southern15th Season as a head coach

The Bucs Under Radebaugh... - CSU’s all-time winningest coach

- 2x Big South Coach of Year (2011-12 & 2014-15) - 2013 and 2015 NIT berths (2 postseason bids in 3 years after

program had 1 in first 47 years) -1 of 8 Big South coaches to win multiple Coach of Year honors

Barclay Radebaugh has presided over one of the most successful stretches in Charleston Southern history during his 13 years as head coach. Radebaugh is the winningest coach in school history and one of only eight coaches to win multiple Big South Coach of the Year awards. He directed CSU to NIT berths in 2012-13 and 2014-15.

Radebaugh delivered one of his best coaching jobs in 2017-18 as the Bucs won eight of their final 11 games and twice pushed UNC Asheville, the league’s regular season champion, to the brink. Powered by Christian Keel-ing and a young nucleus featuring freshmen Phlandrous Fleming Jr. and Ty Jones, among others, CSU rallied from a 2-7 start to conference play to finish 9-9. CSU’s 7-2 record during the second half of league action tied Asheville for the Big South’s best mark. Included in that run was a win at eventual Big South Tournament champion Radford and the Bucs’ first win at Winthrop since 2002. CSU also defeated Illinois State in overtime in November, knock-ing off a Redbirds squad that would go on to advance to the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title game. Christian Keeling collected Second Team All-Big South honors, while Fleming was named to the All-Freshman Team and was runner up for Freshman of the Year.

In 2014-15, Radebaugh was named Big South Coach of the Year and led CSU to the National Invitation Tournament. The Bucs made the most of the experience just as they did in 2013, leading Old Dominion by six points at halftime before falling to the top-seeded Monarchs.

The Bucs had advanced to postseason play just once in the program’s previ-ous 47 seasons.

CSU entered the 2012-13 season as the Big South favorite and backed up that billing by claiming a spot in the NIT. Led by the sophomore backcourt of Saah Nimley (All-Big South 1st Team) and Arlon Harper (All-Big South 2nd Team), CSU was one of the most prolific three-point shooting teams in the country.

The Bucs reached national postseason play for just the second time in school history with a berth in the NIT. Radebaugh and a still young squad made the most of the experience, giving top-seeded Southern Miss all it could handle in a 78-71 loss before a raucous partisan crowd in Hattiesburg.

Radebaugh earned Big South Conference Coach of the Year honors for his efforts in 2011-12, as the Bucs went 19-12 and advanced to the conference

tournament semifinals behind a starting lineup which featured three freshmen and a junior college transfer. CSU’s 19 wins were the program’s most since 1994-1995, as the Bucs secured their first winning season since 1996-1997. Senior Kelvin Martin led the way for Radebaugh’s young group, as the forward played his way onto the all-conference first team while earning a nod as the league’s defensive player of the year for a second consecutive season.

CSU took a step forward in 2010-2011 as well, as it went 16-16 overall and 9-9 in the Big South, finishing sixth in the conference. The Bucs went 12-3 at home, highlighted by a second straight win over The Citadel, and conference victories over the likes of rivals Winthrop and UNC Asheville.

In his first season at CSU, Radebaugh put his imprint on the pro-gram immediately by leading the Bucs to a 13-16 overall record and an appearance in the Big South Tournament Semifinals. The Buc-caneers also beat the College of Charleston for the first time since 1988, and captured the city championship for the first time since 1986 with a victory over The Citadel.

RickDUCKETTAssociate Head Coach

(North Carolina, 1979)Second Year at CSU

Rick Duckett will enter his second season on Charleston Southern’s staff in 2018-19. Duckett, a coaching veteran with over 30 years of experience, came to CSU after spending five seasons as associate head coach at Miami (Ohio).

Duckett’s defensive expertise helped a young CSU team win eight of its final 11 games in 2017-18. The Bucs’ stellar late season play was helped considerably by their ability to force turnovers. CSU led the Big South Conference in turnover margin and ranked 17th nationally in forced turnovers, causing 15.6 per game.

Known as a strong defensive coach, Duckett’s career has included head coaching stints at Fayetteville State, Winston-Salem State and Grambling State, as well as a seven-year stop as an assistant under Dave Odom at South Carolina. He is a 1979 graduate of North Carolina, where he got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant on Dean Smith’s staff in the 1979-80 season.

In his five seasons at Miami, Duckett helped the RedHawks rank top-35 nationally in steals three times. He was also responsible for coaching Miami’s post players. Duckett arrived at Miami on John Cooper’s staff, who he helped to tremendous success at Tennessee State in 2011-12. Tennessee State captured its first winning season in 16 years and first 20-win season in 32 years, going 20-13 while advancing to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament final and earning a spot in the CIT.

As a head coach, Duckett compiled an impressive 156-98 overall record across nine seasons at Fayetteville State (1993-98), Winston-Salem State (1998-01) and Grambling State (2008-09). He posted a 73-19 mark at Winston-Salem State, earning NCAA Division II South Athletic Coach of the Year honors in 1999 and the CIAA Tournament Coaches Award in 1999 and 2000. Duckett piloted WSSU to CIAA championships in both of those campaigns.

Duckett left WSSU to join Odom’s staff at South Carolina in 2001 and remained with the Gamecocks through 2008. South Carolina advanced to the National Invitation Tournament three times in that span, highlighted by back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006.

Duckett has also served as an assistant at Jacksonville (1983-84) and Central Florida (1984-85). After completing his time as a student and graduate assistant in Chapel Hill, Duckett spent two seasons as head coach of the freshman squad at Harvard (1980-82).

Duckett holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UNC. He is married to the former Letita Miller and the couple has two children, Philip and Keigan.

ThomasBUTTERSAssistant Coach

(Clemson, 2011)Fifth Year at CSU

Thomas Butters enters his fifth season at Charleston Southern and second as an assistant coach in 2018-19. Butters earned a promotion following two years as the Bucs’ Director of Basketball Operations. He also served as video coordinator for CSU’s 2015 NIT team.

In his first season as an assistant in 2017-18, Butters helped a young CSU team win eight of its final 11 games. The Bucs beat eventual Big South Tournament champion Radford on the road, picked up their first victory at Winthrop since 2002 and twice pushed UNC Asheville, the league’s regular season champion, to the brink.

A 2011 graduate of Clemson, Butters was a graduate assistant and student manager with the Tigers’ basketball programs under both Oliver Purnell and Brad Brownell.

Butters was named CSU’s Director of Basketball Operations in August of 2015. He helped CSU reach the NIT for the second time in three years.

Butters spent five years at Clemson and was head manager for the 2010-11 season. As a graduate assistant during the 2011-12 campaign, Butters aided in player development, helped coordinate recruiting visits and assisted Clemson’s players academically.

Butters also worked at several elite basketball camps from 2008-11, including Mike Krzyewski’s Duke Basketball Camp, as well as Oliver Purnell and Brad Brownell’s camps at Clemson. He spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Riverside High School in Durham, N.C. while also working full-time as a financial advisor for Morgan Stanley in Chapel Hill.

ArlonHARPERAssistant Coach

(Charleston Southern, 2015)First Year at CSU

Arlon Harper enters his first season as an assistant coach at Charleston Southern in 2018-19. Harper joined the staff in June 2018 after spending two years as an assistant coach at his high school alma mater, Woodward Academy.

From 2011-15, Harper cemented himself as one of the top players in CSU history to help power the Bucs to two NIT berths. The College Park, Ga., product is CSU’s fifth all-time leading scorer and also ranks top-ten in steals (2nd), made field goals (T-6th) and made three-pointers (6th). Harper is one of only four players in league history with over 1,500 points, 450 rebounds, 250 assists and 225 steals.

After pursuing a professional playing career, Harper made an instant impact at Woodward Academy, helping the school to a division championship in 2017-18. He also honed his coaching acumen by training athletes throughout the Atlanta area.

“We are really thrilled to add Arlon to our staff and he has prepared himself well for this opportunity,” CSU head coach Barclay Radebaugh said upon Harper’s hiring. “Arlon was a coach on the floor and played with amazing toughness and a great basketball IQ. He flat out knows how to play the game and is going to be able to impart that to our players.”

Harper earned a communications degree from CSU. He was tabbed to the All-Big South Freshman Team in 2011-12, the All-Big South Second Team in 2012-13 and the All-Big South Tournament Team in 2014, in addition to garnering honorable mention all-conference honors as a senior in 2014-15. Harper and backcourt mate Saah Nimley are the third highest scoring four-year classmate combination in league history.
