U-space
A set of services relying “on a high level of digitalisation and automation offunctions, whether they are on board the UAS itself, or are part of the ground-based environment”, allowing that a large number of UAS can operate in theVLL in a safe and efficient manner.

Additional requirements to access the airspace, the provision of U-spaceservices and drone capabilities (some mandatory, some optionals) are alsoestablished.

In case the U-space is the separator, two options are envisaged:1. The U-space issuing ATC-like separation instructions. In this case, the separation
service will issue mandatory instructions and the Zu volume will be considered ascontrolled airspace (e.g. class B).
2. The U-space issuing collision avoidance advisories. In this case the Zu airspacewill be considered as uncontrolled (e.g., class G).
Each option has pros and cons:• Option 1 can allow higher traffic densities with smaller separation minima, but
requirements on the CNS systems supporting the provision of separationmanagement will be more demanding and can include even hardware andsoftware certification. Moreover, liability aspects must be taken into account.
• Option 2 is simpler for the USSP, but separation minima should be rather cautious, traffic density relatively low and the requirements for DAA and communicationswill be more demanding.

In case the airspace user (the drone) is the separator, two options are envisaged:1. Drones get situational awareness from the U-space. The Traffic information
service provides information to all drones on the airspace situation.2. Drones produce situational awareness on board using U-space information.
Drones receive position information throw a network publishing service (Networkidentification service).
3. Drones produce situational awareness using data received directly from otherdrones.
All these options raise several issues:1. Regulatory: on board hardware and software certification can be required, thus
converting specific operations into certified (even for low SAIL). Standards will berequired.
2. Technical: highly demanding hardware on board drones can increase energyconsuption.
3. Social acceptance issues.
