Our vision is to be recognisedworld-wide as a leadinguniversity for inspiring learning, advancing knowledge andenriching society.
BU is already one of the largestcontributors to the localeconomy, with our activitiescontributing £252m every yearto the local economy and £378m to the South West.
Our research shapes and changes the world, providing solutionsto real-world problems – with 96% of BU research rated asinternationally recognised or higher and 18% ranked as world-leading. One example saw our researchers use animation, special effects, artificial intelligence and virtual reality to helpsurgeons develop skills and prepare for surgery.
We are also making a positive environmental impact on theworld. Last month, we were delighted to be ranked as the 55thuniversity globally in the THE University Impact Rankings forour sustainable measures and the seventh best performinguniversity for Sustainable Consumption and Production.
Our strategic plan for the next five years focuses onstrengthening our position – not only locally but also globally –by ensuring a high-quality experience for students and staff, while creating a distinctive and internationally recognised profile.
To ensure we attract high calibre staff and students and deliverworld class research for years to come, BU needs to continue toinvest in new facilities to remain competitive.
We will have already invested around £350m between 2012and 2025 in our academic environment with more than £200mcommitted in the development of our estates. Now we are readyto embark on phase two of our ambitious estates plans.
The first development will see us make a significant investmentin science and technology, providing a purpose-built buildingfor the country’s future scientists and innovators.
Our £38 million Poole Gateway Building Phase Twodemonstrates a major investment by BU in STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering and Maths). In this newsletter we setout our proposals for this new academic centre.
We are proud of what we have achieved to date in our ambitionto provide a world-class university and are grateful for thesupport and understanding of our neighbours.
BU is holding a public exhibition in June where you can find outin more detail about our new centre for science and technologybefore we submit a planning application later in the summer.
We hope to see you there.

BU has further strengthened its award-winning Travel Plan to encourage more staffand students to use sustainable methods oftravelling to the campus.
Since our first Travel Plan was introduced in2003, the number of staff travelling by caron their own has been reduced from 67% to46% and for students 15% to 6%. Thenumber of students travelling by bus hasincreased from 27% to 49% and the numberwho walk from 7% to 34%.
UNIBUS journeys have increased from400,000 in 2012/13 to more than a millionin 2017/18.
Our new bus hub, which has six stops foreight buses, is making bus travel moreattractive and provides a continuous east-west route for buses through thecampus. It has also helped alleviatecongestion on Fern Barrow.
We want to improve these figures evenfurther by:
l Aiming to reduce staff parking by 10%and student parking by 44%
l Promoting walking and cycling initiativessuch as Bike Buddy and a safe cyclingscheme for inexperienced cyclists, loansand discounts for cycling and walkingequipment, and working with the localbike share provider to encourage peopleto hire bikes.
