• Compressing the photos to the smallest possible size (but so that the quality is still acceptable).

You also need to show that you can organise your work. Show evidence that each of the photos has a meaningful name and is stored in suitably named folders.

UNIT 30: Digital Graphics

Scenario: You have started working as a graphical designer of a company called – Waterloo Marketing. You have been assigned a client called The London Nautical School and they have asked you to produce a series of materials for their “Induction Day”. This day is a good way to introduce new students and their families to the school and to promote the clubs and activities on offer. You will be based at the school for this project and you will work under the Head of Inductions.

You are required to design:

• Logo for the Fair • Postcard • A3 poster to display in public, • Flyer to be sent to the parents • Banner to be displayed on the website.

Task 1

You have been asked to develop a postcard that has picture of the school or elements of the school. The client does not have the skills to prepare the photos that are needed for the site so has asked you to do this as part of the brief.

You must take the photos yourself (or get someone else to take them for you) as you must show evidence that you have edited them (i.e. you do not want perfect photos!

Take the necessary pictures (as specified in the brief) and then prepare them for the web site. Your evidence must show each photo before and after editing and you need to explain, or annotate screen shot evidence, what improvements you made.

Improvements could include some or all of all of the following:

• Cropping any surplus areas of the photographs. • Making changes using photo editing tools that will improve the quality of the

images (e.g. soften/sharpen/red eye reduction). • Editing out a distraction in the photo by using the clone tool or a paintbrush

(or other effective technique). • Change the colour balance to rectify a colour problem. • Resizing the images to a suitable size for the web site (keeping height in

proportion to width). Note that any images for rollovers or slide shows work best if they are identical size.

• Compressing the photos to the smallest possible size (but so that the quality is still acceptable).

You also need to show that you can organise your work. Show evidence that each of the photos has a meaningful name and is stored in suitably named folders.
