How am I assessed?

The course is graded from both exam and controlled assessment. There are 6 pieces of coursework and they are, for example: written reports, presentations, newspaper articles and videos. This gives you the opportunity to build up some ICT skills whilst studying business.

The exam is 2 hours long and is worth 60 marks; the exam is on the topic of Finance and Promotion.

You will learn about business in a local, national and global context. You will be tasked with researching a small to medium size business in the local area and completing three pieces of coursework on those chosen business. Some popular choices this year have been Galloways, Windy Arbour Farm and Orrell Windows to name a few.You will then have to plan, show and review a business idea of your own (3 pieces of controlled assessment).Finally the examination is on finance and promotion.

This course is very practical and will give you hands on experience of how real world businesses operate. You are given freedom to choose your own research businesses so you are able to personalise your experience of this qualification.

The course consists of three units:

RO18 – Health and well-being for child development.

R019 – Understand the equipment and nutritional needs of children from birth to five years.

R020 – Understand the development of a child from birth to five years.

Maths skills – you will need to be a confident mathematician. Resilience – you will need to have the resilience to continue to refine your work especially with programming.Problem Solving – you’ll be required to plan a solution to a problem and this could take some time.Organisational skills – organising your time, reviewing your work and progress. Good attendance – computer science concepts can be challenging so good attendance to all lessons, revision sessions and support sessions allow for greater success

Paper 1 -Principles of Computer Science (50%, 90 minutes written examination)This paper has 5 topics of learning. The units include: Computational thinking, Data, Computers, Networking and Issues and Impacts. The exam has 5 sets of questions from each topic, so you are guaranteed to be assessed on every aspect of the teaching and learning which takes place in the classroom.Paper 2 -Application of computational thinking (50%, 120 minutes online examination in Python 3)This exam focuses on one larger topic of problem solving with programming. It will test your ability and understanding of algorithms, what they are used for and how they work when programming. It will help you to develop understanding of decomposing and analysing problems and give you the ability to read, write, refine and evaluate programs.

• How to plan pre-production effectively including understanding of client requirements and reviewing pre-production briefs.

• You will learn the basics of digital graphics editing for the creative and digital media sector, considering client requirements.

• Using your creativity to combine components to create a functional, intuitive and aesthetically pleasing website against a client brief.

What sort of skills do I need to be successful on this course?

What will this course prepare me for?

You will design and make products using a range of materials such as wood, metal and plastic. During year 10 you will make several different mini products so you become confident and familiar with working with different materials, tools, machinery and manufacturing processes. Throughout the course you will produce a final folder and product of your choice that will demonstrate all the skills you have learnt.

Year 10Controlled Assessment (50%) based on a ‘Design and Make’ assessment consisting both of a written portfolio (35%) and a practical product (15%). Assessment include designing, making, analysing and evaluating.

Year 112 hour written exam (50%) based on 3 sections. Core technical principles, specialist technical principles and designing and making principles.

You will develop knowledge and understanding related to a range of hospitality and catering providers and what they have to take into account to be successful. There is the opportunity to learn about issues related to nutrition and food safety and how they affect successful hospitality and catering operations. You will also have the opportunity to develop some food preparation and cooking skills as well as transferable skills of problem solving, organisation and time management, planning and communication.

Unit 1 is made up of an onscreen assessment and a paper based assessment focusing on the learners knowledge of the Hospitality and Catering Industry.
