Coach’s Message

To All Bonbeach-Tangy Cricket Club members,

The overall aim of the coaching personnel at Bonbeach-Tangy Cricket Club is to

provide all players with the opportunity to reach their full potential as a player through

developing the three core cricket skills:

Fielding

Batting

Bowling

All players should aim to find and pursue methods of positively contributing to the

performance of both their own team and the on-field strength of the overall club. In

addition, all players are expected to assist other with their own pursuit of cricket

development via encouragement and assistance.

Your goal as a player is to take responsibility for your own improvement by utilising

the various resources at the club to strive for your full potential in each of the three

core skills. The resources available may be in the form of coaching, activities,

equipment and facilities.

You should aim to be fully aware of the goals of both your team and club for each

game and the overall season

The coaching staff will provide you with a holistic approach to development focusing

on improving various cricket skills in each of the four key improvement areas;

Technical, Tactical, Psychological and Physical. Skills and abilities in each of these

four areas will be evaluated, developed and re-evaluated periodically.

Enjoy your cricket and the environment of playing and training, including the off-field

activities of the Bonbeach-Tangy Cricket Club. With all players working in the same

direction towards individual and overall team and club objectives, the Bonbeach

Cricket Club will have its best chance of on-field and off-field success.

Do your best with every ball you field, face or bowl. Good luck and enjoy the 2011-

2012 season.

Four Areas of Development

Within the three core cricket skills of fielding, batting and bowling, there are four (4)

specific areas of skill development. Training at Bonbeach-Tangy Cricket Club in

2011-2012 will address each of the four areas, giving each player a greater

opportunity to reach their full potential. It is also important for all players to take

responsibility for ensuring that all areas are addressed when training individually

(e.g. Physical)

Technique

The specific fielding, batting and bowling movements used by a cricketer are referred

to as their technique. The angle of the bat at impact, arm position when throwing

and wrist position when bowling are all examples of technique. Whilst good cricket

technique is important, it is only one of four factors that ultimately lead to

performance on the field.

Thinking

How you are thinking and where you are focusing are extremely high influences of

performance in cricket. When should you concentrate? What should you

concentrate on? Are you becoming distracted by irrelevant factors? It is vitally

important to train your mind during practice sessions to perform optimally during a

match.

Tactics

Tactics refers to the decisions you make in a game. Running aggressively between

wickets, choosing when to bowl a slower ball and taking an extra step closer in the

slips are all examples of cricket tactics. Whilst the captain of each team sets the

tone for many tactical decisions in the sport of cricket, there are many times when

each player is required to take individual responsibility for a tactically based decision

relating to their own performance. Both team specific and individual tactics will be

discussed and trained throughout the season.

Physical

Physical attributes and fitness have an influence on cricketing performance. Does

your level of agility save your team, or cost your team runs? Can you bowl long

spells when you captain asks you to continue? Does your lack of batting fitness lead

to concentration errors? Physical fitness can always be improved to lead to better

on-field performance. It is each player’s individual responsibility to improve and

maintain physical attributes and fitness during both the off-season and in-season.

Page | 17

Cricket Fitness

Fitness Development

It is the responsibility of all players at Bonbeach-Tangy Cricket Club to improve or

maintain fitness in all of the areas listed above on an individual basis over both the

winter months and In-Season. Whilst club training sessions will be conducted with a

high level of intensity, the emphasis will be on Technical, Tactical and Psychological

development.

Components of Fitness for Improved Cricket Performance

Agility

The ability of the body to change direction quickly is referred to as agility. Agility is

useful when fielding and running between wickets and is considered an extremely

important component of fitness for successful cricket.

Speed

The ability of the body or a limb to move quickly is referred to as speed. Speed is

important when running quickly to the ball in the field, or running between wickets.

High hand/arm speed is also used when bowling, throwing or for bat speed and is

considered an extremely important component of fitness for cricket.

Strength & Power

The ability of the body to generate force is referred to as strength. The ability to use

strength with speed is referred to as power. Strength and Power are used for bat

speed, fast bowling and throwing for power and distance. It is important that lack of

Strength and Power are not a limiting factor in overall cricket performance.

Endurance

The ability of the body to continue activity over a long period of time is referred to as

Endurance. Reasonable amounts of cardiovascular and muscular endurance are

required for extended bowling spells, a long innings or a day in the field. It is

important to maintain levels of endurance that do not limit batting, bowling and

fielding performance.

Flexibility

The range of motion around the various joints of the body is referred to as flexibility.

Flexibility is important for both performance and injury prevention in all areas of

fielding, batting and bowling.
