    Sustainable City of the Year Brimbank City Council was recently announced Sustainable City of the Year at the Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria awards. The award celebrates local sustainability achievements and is great recognition of all the work the Brimbank community has put into being sustainable. Councils focus on community-based sustainability and conservation initiatives including waste management, whole-of-water cycle

    management, conservation of natural assets and energy and greenhouse gas reduction has led to this achievement. A key priority for Council is engaging and educating Brimbanks diverse community so everyone can enjoy a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. In addition to winning the top award as Sustainable City of the Year, Council was also awarded the Community Action and

    Leadership Award for the Brimbank Gems Program as well as the Resource Recovery and Waste Management Award for the Sustainable Living Expo.

    Get involved Extra court for Keilor Stadium The Keilor Basketball Association (KBA) will provide $1.2 million funding towards the Keilor Basketball and Netball Stadium (KBNS) redevelopment. This will fund a third new court to be built as part of the stadium expansion.

    Brimbank City Council views the redevelopment and extension of the KBNS as a high priority due to the growing sporting needs of the local community.

    Council has allocated more than $5 million to fund a two court extension and redevelopment of the facility which included $650,000 in Major Facilities Grant funding from Sport and Recreation Victoria. Council has been working with the KBA, SRV, Basketball Victoria and Netball Victoria on the project.

    Sunshine Lantern FestivalCome along to the Sunshine Lantern Festival on Saturday 6 September to enjoy a full day of family fun.Between 10am8pm, Hampshire Road, between Devonshire Road and Hertford Road willcome alive with roving street performers, entertainment, childrens rides, jumping castles, market stalls, street food, face-painting, lantern making, buskers, culminating in a spectacular fi reworks display.Activities will take place inside and along the fronts of Sunshine Marketplace and Sunshine Plaza. A stage and seating area will burst with live entertainment on the forecourt of Sunshine Marketplace. A Lion and Dragon dance will take place along the frontage of the Hampshire Road shops leading a parade of children followed by their families.     Hoons flee fiery crashPolice are hunting three men who crashed a stolen car into a Sunshine North home on Friday, causing the side of the house to catch fire. The driver of a Honda Accord without number plates lost control of the car in Suffolk Road about 5.15pm. Witnesses say the three men fled as the fire threatened the home. Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman Trevor Woodward said the car hit the side of the house and struck a gas meter, sparking the fire. A woman inside the home managed to escape and was treated for smoke inhalation. Damage to the house is estimated to be about $75,000. Information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

    Nestle site rezoned for homesBrimbank council will rezone a 6.8-hectare site in St Albans that could fit more than 200 new homes. The council voted last week to rezone the former Nestle site on Regan Street from Industrial 1 to General Residential to allow for residential development. The site is now occupied by TIC Logistics, which operates a return and collection depot for Myer and Bunnings. Cameras back in actionTwo fixed speed cameras on the Western Ring Road were reactivated last Thursday. The cameras, about 560 metres north of Ballarat Road, Ardeer, on the southbound lane, and 650 metres south of Ballarat Road, Deer Park, on the northbound lane, were turned off in February 2011 to allow for roadworks.

    A road trip like no other has been launched at Brimbank Park.

    More than 260 Variety Bash entrants and officials started their engines last Thursday for a 10-day fund-raising trek to Noosa.

    The annual event features outrageously themed cars and crews, and this years group is no exception. Batman, Spiderman, Elmo, Cookie Monster, Woody from Toy Story and even some Smurfs joined in on the fun.

    Glen Turnbull and Andrew Cummings, who dressed as dalmatians, have already raised more than $15,000 for the childrens charity.

    You see parts of Australia that youd never otherwise see and you get to help kids, Mr Turnbull says. Its good fun.

    David Hobbs, taking part in his eighth bash this year, dressed up as Elvis for the occasion.

    Mr Hobbs will ride with three other Elvis impersonators, playing The Kings tunes all the way up the east coast. We came up with the theme one year and have built on it every year since.

    On their way to Noosa, entrants will visit children who Variety has helped. Drivers got their first taste of gratitude at last weeks launch when Nakul, 11, who has a skeletal muscle disorder, was presented with a lightweight wheelchair.

    Since 1992, the Victorian Variety Bash has covered 93,288 kilometres and raised more than $18 million for children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs.

    This years bash finishes on Saturday.

    Springside P-9 College students tapped into their inner authors recently when the Caroline Springs school hosted its second annual Twilight Writers Festival. Regular school hours were thrown out the window for the day, with all students from years prep to 9 starting their school day at noon and finishing at 6pm. The writers festival included a visit by illustrator David Miller, pictured with five-year-olds Zarli and Lincoln, and authors Craig Smith and Tim Pleger.
