ASSESSMENT OF PRACTICE LEARNING Great emphasis is placed on learning within a supportive and supervised practice learning environment. The aim of practice learning assessment is to facilitate the development of students to become proactive at delivering safe, effective, high quality care in diverse, rapidly changing, complex healthcare environments across the health-illness continuum. Furthermore, it ensures that the public are safeguarded by developing responsible, accountable and autonomous professionals. It aims to support students to become registered nurses who are fit for purpose and able to meet the key nursing needs of all patient groups. Additionally, it aims not to lose sight of the uniqueness of each field of practice, developing practitioners who are exceptional at meeting the complex and co-existing nursing and healthcare needs of service users and their families from their chosen field of practice. The programme has a 50% practice-based learning requirement, with practice learning modules providing 50% of the credit for your programme each year. Practice learning modules are mandatory and you are required to complete six practice based learning modules, one for each semester of the programme:

YEAR ONE YEAR TWO YEAR THREE SEMESTER 1 SEMESTER 2 SEMESTER 1 SEMESTER 2 SEMESTER 1 SEMESTER 2 ND4303

ND4306

ND5303

Within these modules the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) (2010) Essential Skills Clusters (ESC) and Standards for Competence have been utilised to provide learning outcomes. Your Ongoing Achievement Record has been aligned to these modules learning outcomes, which are written to reflect your level of study. Your Ongoing Achievement Record has been developed to facilitate formative and summative assessment of your practice learning across the three years of the programme. It incorporates progression outcomes to be achieved across each year of the programme. The progression outcomes are mapped to the NMC domains and incorporate Essential Skills Clusters, to aid your development and achievement of the outcomes. Assessment of practice learning is an important component of the total assessment process of preparation of nurses for their roles in professional life. Assessment of practice learning is continuous throughout the programme and has been designed to be progressive and reflects the expected development of a registered nurse.

Practice learning modules are predominantly delivered in the practice learning environment in a range of diverse, hospital and community based settings, these experiences are supplemented by clinical skills sessions simulation days and applied theory. Applied Theory You will have one day per week to undertake applied theory. Applied theory is directed academic study undertaken within your work place or place of study supported by the Virtual Learning Environment, Mentor/Supervisor and your Coach in Practice, which will contribute towards the theoretical hours for the programme and include assessment for applied learning in practice.

Page 6: BSc (Hons) Nursing (Mental Health) Ongoing …...1 University of Gloucestershire: PreRegistrati- on BSc (Hons) Nursing (Mental Health): Assessment of Practice Learning Year 1 (Vr 3Mar

6 University of Gloucestershire: Pre-Registration BSc (Hons) Nursing (Mental Health): Assessment of Practice Learning Year 1 (Vr 3 Mar 18)

You could spend time on the following activities:

∗ Applying theory learnt to patient care ∗ Service improvement project ∗ Specialist Nurse/Practitioner ∗ Worksheets on Moodle ∗ Simulation In University

This is not an exhaustive list. Opportunities of where you can study applied theory include:

∗ On the ward delivering patient care ∗ In University ∗ In trust/organisation ∗ In library

Figure 1. Illustrates how applied theory sessions fits into your clinical practice modules.

Your Ongoing Achievement Record is a generic document for all Pre-Registration Nursing students, adult, children’s and mental health fields of practice. The progression outcomes and essential skills are designed to be met in a range of practice learning. This key document accompanies your practice learning log and Applied Theory Evidence environments. If you are concerned that your practice learning environment does not facilitate the achievement of the progression outcomes, you must notify the practice facilitator/educator as soon as possible. They will work alongside your mentor and the coach in practice to support your learning. Exceptionally, where it is not possible to assess a specific skill in the practice learning environment, simulation may be used. To facilitate achievement of all ESC, if you have opportunity to complete a skill which is not contained within one of the progression outcomes for your current practice learning experience. It is also possible to complete it, making sure your mentor signs when appropriate and as required. There are six summative assessments of practice learning points across the programme, occurring each semester at the end of your practice learning experience. This is the process of evaluating

Page 7: BSc (Hons) Nursing (Mental Health) Ongoing …...1 University of Gloucestershire: PreRegistrati- on BSc (Hons) Nursing (Mental Health): Assessment of Practice Learning Year 1 (Vr 3Mar

7 University of Gloucestershire: Pre-Registration BSc (Hons) Nursing (Mental Health): Assessment of Practice Learning Year 1 (Vr 3 Mar 18)

your learning in the practice setting and you must successfully pass these summative assessments to allow you to pass the associated module.

There are 18 progression outcomes in year one and 20 in year two and three. You are required to work with your mentor to identify which progression outcomes are best achieved in which practice learning environment. You must be summatively assessed and pass half the progression outcomes by the end of semester one each year and all progression outcomes must be achieved by the progression point at the end of year one and two and prior to registration in year three. Except for progression outcome 16 ‘demonstrates the skills of safe medicines management and safely and accurately carries out medicines calculations’, which in year one must be completed in your second placement and during years two and three needs to be completed across both practice learning experiences with formative assessment at the end of the first placement in the year and summative assessment in second practice learning experience. Once a progression outcome has been achieved it is your responsibility to ensure that it is maintained. By 3pm on the pre-planned submission date, you are required to submit your completed FINAL INTERVIEW FORM, AND RECORD OF ATTENDANCE FORM’S via MOODLE. The university will not be held responsible if these are submitted by any other means. Non-submission of these documents by the submission date will result in a fail being recorded for your practice learning module.

Your final interview sheet will be kept in your student file and work based learning support will use the attendance records to record your hours and evidence of 24 hour care on your training record. Your Ongoing Achievement Record will be reviewed by your personal Tutor and they will consider your progress and achievement and return your documents to you during your end of semester tutorial.

Summative assessment of practice learning is pass/fail only and does not contribute to the classification of the Honours degree you are awarded.

The NMC have set minimum criteria that must be met at set progression points during your programme (at the end of year one and year two) – this criteria must be met for you to progress with your studies. By the end of your programme and prior to registration with the NMC you must be able to evidence your achievement of both the NMC competencies and essential skills clusters; this requires you to pass ALL practice learning modules to gain registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
