As management students, we at WeSchool couldn’t miss the Round Table Conference of the PGDM Rural Management program aptly called “Aurum” held in the boardroom of WeSchool, Mumbai. The theme of the Round Table Conference was “Lifting the Rural Sector to the top of the pyramid”. The Round Table Conference was a huge platform where students got an opportunity to interact with industry experts of the Rural Market, gain insights from the discussion and know their perspective about this emerging sector. It certainly helped us to correlate our learnings from the classroom and research projects in line with their first hand on field experiences and their views.

M. D. Prasad, COO, Idea Cellular, rightly said at the conference, “Sow seeds of education and vocation” for the upcoming managers who shall soon step into the real world. It was a privilege to see Mr. Ramesh Iyer, Managing Director, CEO, Financial Services Sector, Mahindra Finance, moderate the Round Table Conference with élan. He rightly quoted that the question with respect to the Rural Sector is who needs whom? We need the rural market more than the rural market needs us! Another interesting insight gained from Mr. Sanjay Panigrahi, CEO, Sahaj e-Village Limited, was that the role of the Government is to do the development job, providing the basic infrastructure, and role of private sector is to take up business ventures based on that. It is the corporate sector which has to take up business models which will bring “Profits at the bottom of the pyramid”. Thus, doing business in rural areas does not mean that it has to be a CSR activity. Group Director, WeSchool, Prof. Dr. Uday Salunkhe appropriately concluded by saying that the industry and academia should together create a compelling learning ecosystem in rural management. Industries can share their challenges and students can work on them.

Aurum, which is a complete student driven initiative proved to be a platform to experience as well as learn to manage and bring forth a wonderful show. It’s the thirst for knowledge and a wish to see business dignitaries from different sectors such as telecom, banking, FMCG, agri – input etc. come together on a common platform to share their knowledge and enlighten the students. The participation from the industry was itself a proof of the student’s hard work and their keenness to know more about this sector before they step in to the real world in a few months. Lastly, Uttam Soni, Head, Corporate Quality and Business Excellence, Tata Capital Financial Services Limited said that it is patience and time that is needed to understand the rural consumer. The industry support was a big morale booster for the PGDM Rural Management students who are willing to go the extra mile to work in this emerging sector, do live projects as well as research.

‘Corporate Chanakya Seminar’ at SIES College of Management Studies

The SIESCOMS Innovation team had organized a seminar "Relevance of Chanakya's principles in today's management" by Mr. Radhakrishnan Pillai, author of the best seller "Corporate Chanakya", on Friday, 25th October 2013 at SIES College of Management Studies, Nerul. The main objective is to introduce the genius of Chanakya and enlighten the students on how our age old Management principles still hold good and have stood the test of time. Mr. Radhakrishnan Pillai has extensively studied the ancient text "Kautilya's Arthashastra" and spreads knowledge of Chanakya across the globe through his lectures, workshops and training programs. With nearly 20 years of combined working and business experience he is a well-known management speaker, trainer, author and consultant. He has written nearly 200 articles for various magazines, newspapers, journals and periodicals, including Times of India group as a weekly columnist.

He explained the pearls of Chanakya Neeti which are even applicable to this day and time. Aanveekshikee means ‘One arrow may or may not kill the enemy but a man using his sharpened intellect can destroy the king along with his entire kingdom’. He emphasized on the importance of strategy and situational leadership. Some of the gems that he shared with the youngsters were, “Know something about everything and know everything about something”, “Be friendly with everybody but choose your friends carefully”, “Even in the rat race, you are a rat”, “Worrying is a rocking chair”, “Understand how a fish thinks in order to catch one”, “Understand emotions but do not be emotional”, “Don’t take office to home, take your home to office”, etc.

Management is all about mind-set, way of thinking. It is a means of starting an undertaking by capturing the excellence of men and material having decided the time and place and having made provision against failure and accomplishing the task set up to be done. The 4P formula to achieve success in life:1. Meet a lot of PEOPLE2. Read a lot of PAGES (books, magazines)3. Visit a lot of PLACES4. Watch many PICTURES (movies, current trends)Last but not least, he inspired the students to think differently and have a desire to learn continuously.

Tips for young professionalsstarting a new career – Part 2Your entry level resume has landed you your first entry level job. Now what? Read some tips and tricks for succeeding in your entry level job. As you step into your first PG work experience, there are a lot of things you need to know that your textbooks didn’t teach you.

Your First Job Is Not Your DestinyYour first job in no way predicts where you will ultimately end up. Talk to any mid-career worker, and you will be shocked where his career began. Your main task on your first job is to test your wings, learn how organizations work, how business gets done, and what makes people and organizations successful. Remember, career (not job) changes are in your future as you learn, grow and change.

Watch Your AttitudeOne of the biggest complaints about new college grads is that they often expect too much too soon and come across as thinking they know more than seasoned employees. Know that you will need to earn your stripes, as well as the trust of colleagues and supervisors, before being given more responsibility. Especially watch your attitude with support staff so as not to come across as arrogant or condescending.

Learn About the Various Kinds of Power and InfluenceObserve how the staff members interact with each other and how things get done. Who really calls the shots, compared with what the organizational chart says? Who seems to have more power than might be indicated by his job title? Who is looked up to, admired and why? How are decisions made: top down, bottom up or a combination of the two?

Figure Out the Organizational CulturePay attention to the behaviors and results valued in your organization. Also, find out what the company stands for. Ask what the organization’s mission statement is and how it is different from the competition. Do you get a feeling of teamwork? What are the written and unwritten rules? What kinds of people seem successful, and why?

Prez-Geek’

Every aspiring individual requires more than work experience and educational qualifications to turn their bold dreams into a reality. And this is precisely what ITM – SIA promises and ensures, by providing a platform to the students to groom themselves and be better corporates and individuals in the days to come. In September 2013, the institute organized a competition where the participants had to present their views on the current economic scenario. The event was called ‘Prez-Geek’. The participants came prepared with their presentations which were well analyzed. The event drew a large audience as the topics were educative, informative and helped individuals to prepare themselves in embracing challenges and learning techniques to overcome hindrances.

The month end was marked by ITM-SIA’s Maiden Inter class Quiz Contest with fierce competition among the partici-pating groups. It was a test of knowledge, brain storming skills and of team camaraderie. The quest for unearthing and exploring the best brains in the campus, and the wizards who possess the winning passion and the killer instinct of cracking the toughest questions, was being tested!

Also, one of the upcoming activities, which the students are eagerly looking forward to is the Industrial Visit to Sula Wines, Nasik. During the IV, the students would get an insight regarding the internal working environment of the company, the manufacturing process, a full lifecycle as well as useful information related to the practical aspects of the educa-tional course which cannot be realised in lectures. The additional fun and frolic which would always be there whenever there is a company of peers would be the icing on the cake.

It is observed that organized retailing is emerging fast in India because of new government policies. This will create a huge potential scope of employment for MBA students across the country. So, it is very necessary for MBA students to learn the technical know-how of organized retailing.

When India is standing on the verge of implementing new FDI policy in retail, M. H. Gardi School of Management took an opportunity to look into the retail field by organizing an expert session with Mr. Randeep Vala, who is a retail expert and having a vast corporate exposure. Mr. Randeep Vala is working as the Store Head with Croma Retail, which is one of the biggest electronics mega store chain run by TATA Group. He has been with retail sector for more than five years. Almost 50 students and 3 faculties have participated in the workshop.

As per the tradition of Gardi Vidyapith, dignitary was welcomed by Prof. (Dr.) Sandip Solanki, Director, MBA Dept. to commence the workshop.

The whole session was interactive, where students asked questions to the retail expert. Mr. Randeep answered them all and satisfied the curiosity of students regarding the modern format retailing.

Modern format mega stores like Big Bazaar and D-Mart give huge discounts to their customers which are not affordable for small retailers. Mr. Randeep explained the reason why it has become possible for big stores to do it. He also shared his experiences of managing the mega stores, managing the inventory there, and most importantly managing the employees.

With his concluding remarks, he told the students that it is very necessary to be efficient if they want to run the mega store effectively. From increasing foot falls to avoiding theft, from updated inventories to marketing strategies, everything is required to run a mega store. He appreciated the participation and enthusiasm of the students to learn about the organized retailing.
