BRYLOR RANCH RED ANGUS BULL SALE!! You know what.... I’ve been sittin’ here thinking about what I wanted to say

in my catalogue opening letter and I’ve realized a couple of things just now. ThisBull Sale catalogue is way far more than just a bull sale. The older I get themore of the little stuff I am starting to appreciate more and more. It is the 28thof February and it’s -5o C outside, the sun is brilliant and there’s absolutely nowind today. We have just a couple of inches of snow on the ground, themountains behind my house are absolutely stunning and my kids have beenplaying outside all afternoon. I have a beautiful wife, my kids have all four oftheir grandparents, we have a great group of friends all around us and I amhappy and very content in the changes and choices I am making for the Brylor

Ranch program!! So you will have to forgive me and get over it that my scheduleand Grant & Laura Lee’s extremely busy schedule didn’t coincide this year andget any pictures taken for this bull sale catalogue – I was busy with kids, cowsand 4-H! So come to Fort Macleod on the 25th and 26 of March and see them incolor!

I want to make three main points for this year’s opening address for ourBull Sale –

#1 Congratulations to all the survivors that remain in the cow business fromthe last ten+ years since May 20th of 2003. Enjoy the times we are seeingright now on our prices in our beloved industry. I will always remember theEnglishmen telling me at Farmfair in 2003 & 2004 that BSE is the bestthing that could happen to your country... in the long run. Times will get bet-ter they said. It took eleven years but they were right!

#2 I am going back to a more non-association propaganda kind of a Bull Sale!90+% of the purebred bull sale catalogues that come in the mail today onlyput in adjusted weights on their bulls. Do you know how long it would taketo run a 2000 head calf sale in October/November if we had to stop and ad-just all the weights on the calves in the ring to 205 Day Weights? Actualweaning weights and yearling weights are actual and there is no gettingaround that fact. It’s sort of like telling the truth – there’s only one version of it!

#3 Everyone is asking me what one bull is going to cost this year? I am notsure but that’s the beauty of the free market/discovery kind of auction sys-tem we have! I tell ranchers this though, stay in your comfort zone or levelthat you have been buying bulls at... plus the additional extra value you getwhen you salvage your bull. Example – if you’ve been buying at the $4 - $5000 range, then add theextra $2 - $2600 you get nowadays for your cull bulls when you are donewith them.... and be at the same great quality bulls as usual in the sale ofyour choice.

This year being our 10th Anniversary of hosting the LittleRoyal, we wanted a cowman who truly represents the perseveranceand determination it requires to be a part of our industry, to also bethe one to sort the pens of heifers.

Dick Hardy is a stockman -– both horses and cows. He, alongwith his next generation, ranch in the beautiful foothills of the Rockiesabout twenty miles south of Pincher Creek where raisingtop quality Angus cattle is a standard on his ranch and areal benchmark.

My name is Carsen Dunlop. I was born and raised on a mixed farm and ranch west ofGranum and for as long as I can remember I have been very involved with it. My family’sagricultural history goes back many years and I hope that there are many more to come. Boththe farming and ranching aspects of the agricultural world are very important to me and I likeworking with them hand in hand. If someone asks what I enjoy doing on my leisure time, I willusually tell them that I like to work and as funny as that sounds, agriculture is my passion and Ienjoy pursuing it. I have been involved in agriculture basically my whole life. When I was young my parentsmade sure that I was able to be a part of whatever was going on and even if I wasn’t being ofany help, they would always allow time. I can remember going on many riding trips taking cowsto the hills for summer and bringing them back in the fall as well as countless hours sleepingbehind the seat of the tractor. I give my parents and grandparent’s credit for making sure I wasinvolved and I think that is the reason that I enjoy it as much as I do today. I am currently attending Lethbridge College in the Agricultural Sciences program whichoffers classes in both the plant side of things whether that’s grain or pasture, and the animalside. I am presently in my second semester of my first year and after the two year program hasconcluded my plan is to take my newfound knowledge and bring it back to the farm and use it tothe best of my ability.

My name is Kayla Trotter and I was born and raised on Lazy S Farms, just southwest ofFort Macleod. I am very active in rodeo and I love fitness training. I am currently enrolled in theAgriculture Technology program offered by the Lethbridge College for this coming up fall semester. As the Sales Manager for MasterFeeds, my Dad has had a major influence over my 3brothers, 2 sisters and I. Every breakfast, lunch and dinner table discussion would eventuallyevolve to some sort of agricultural issue. Grain and cattle prices were usually the main topics.Growing up in and around agriculture has helped me understand important life skills such asperseverance and also how to make wise investments with your money. Each calving season,my siblings and I are given a calf and when they are sold each October, the money goes rightinto a savings account. On my 18th birthday instead of being given some sort of material gift,my parents gave me a cow calf pair, a gift that will continue to give year after year. With both ofthese examples I was able to learn how to invest my money into something that is going to giveme some sort of profit back, rather than just purchasing material items that have no returnvalue. Agriculture has always been a big part of my life and I am excited to expand my knowledgetowards something I will be passionate about everyday. I consider being brought up aroundlivestock and farming a great privilege, and I look forward to getting a job that helps further thealready thriving industry.

The damoriginally sold in our “Tradition With A Vision” Sale for $10,000 and then laterretraded for $17,000 and is now at Griffins’ in Iowas. Pretty dependable geneticsyou can bank on in this Mulberry x New Trend 22D bred bull. We got Boulevard back two years ago in a straight across trade for anotherBrylor herdbull called Wander. Nick VanGaalen says the Boulevard daughters areabsolutely gorgeous uddered and have lots of muscle and shape to them as well.

Best thing we ever did back in our 2011 Bull Sale was to NOT sellthis homegrown powerhouse herdbull. We announced that we had tohave three parties willing to start him at 10.... Looks pretty reasonablenow at today’s market! His sons last year averaged nearly $8000 andhis daughters are producing like we thought they would. He has a phenomenalset of feet and throws big scrotals in his sons. His daughters have beautifuludders and are big, growthy cattle. He has had very few calves equal his ownbirth weight which proves the point that the birth weight column is all relative tohow you use an individual bull in your own program. Skor ranks in the top 1% forboth Weaning Weight and Yearling Weight and Carcass in Canada and is nowbreeding cows for Danny & Val Adamson at Forrestburg, AB.

Here’s a bull that quietly gets his job done and gets it done verywell! Pretty nice spread from Birth to Yearling (-2 to a buck on YearlingWeight!). For a calving ease bull that has been used primarily on firstcalf heifers he ranks in the top 8% of the breed for Yearling Weight – that’simpressive. His paternal sisters are some of the best old cows if you can still find some

anymore. Lots of action on his sons too. We had one top our bull sale last year at$26,000 to Gregg’s in South Dakota. Wander puts a nice dark color into hiscalves, a nice pattern and lots of hair. Wander is now deceased and his progeny will now be limited.

Since making old Arson the high seller at the SSS Sale in 2009,we’ve done with him exactly what we intended... made a pile of moneywith him! His sons have sold extremely well, his daughters are fast be-coming some of the best young cows and his scarce semen has been selling upto $500 U.S./straw. He ranks in the top 2% on Weaning Weight and top 1% onYearling Weight and Carcass Weight. Interesting to note about this bull, I didn’t always think as highly of him as Ido now. He died three years ago and his sons in the sale this year are year-lings... you must have a fairly good opinion of a bull to take the time to A.I. to him,eh? His rare and very valuable semen will primarily be used for ET work now.

He was the $35,000 U.S. high seller at Badlands 2012 sale inNorth Dakota selling to my good friend and associate in Iowa, KyleGilchrist who told me he had a pretty neat bull with performance, pedigreeand carcass merit. Opportunity ranks in the top 1% for WW, YW, Marbling andCarcass Wt and is the highest Weaning Weight and Yearling Weight bull in theentire Red Angus breed – his 104 Weaning Weight is higher than about 95% ofthe bulls Yearling Weight number in the breed! His first son at Badlands sale thisyear bought $24,500 U.S. and his “Pen of 3” daughters at Denver was the GrandChampion Pen in 2015 and his first daughter to ever sell in Canada brought$24,000 at Agribition. He knocked... we answered... now it’s your turn!
