One of the most exciting attributes of landscape architecture to me is the process of forming partnerships between the design team and the clients. I am inspired by the collaborative process of design leading to the formation of bespoke design schemes that unearth the client’s vision while creating a quality plan grounded in formal analysis, and the application of sound environmental planning. Throughout my education, I have striven to embrace issues of sustainability, resource preservation, and codes and regulations that affect the dialogue between the designer and the user. I have explored conceptual ideas that landscapes can be drivers for social change, and for interaction and personalization of the environment. Furthermore, I believe in celebrating what makes each place unique by revealing its history and ecological processes. My planned direction in landscape architecture involves creating innovative

spaces that are ecologically sensitive, foster community involvement, and growth. My education includes foundation studies in computer science followed by three years in the landscape architecture program at Colorado State University. Over the course of my education, I have developed many skills integral to the successful practice of landscape architecture. In addition, I have cultivated a set of diverse supporting interests in fine arts including costume design, photography, graphic design, and literature. This has allowed me to plan design projects with a greater appreciation for cultural interests, and the ability to approach problems from non-conventional perspectives with a refined sense of aesthetics. My passion for landscape architecture stems from a desire to be a creative practitioner, and provide the public with an understanding of the beauty and care of nature. Landscape architecture allows me to channel

my creative and analytical abilities into innovative statements of conceptual thought while providing many opportunities to work with allied professionals.

De Stijil Courtyard My intent was to create a design for this library courtyard that celebrated and worked with the existing building by using a complementary design style. Furthermore, I wanted to create a place that was out of the ordinary and somewhat surreal, in order to make the occupants of the space conscious of their surroundings. This idea was further influenced by the work of Gerrit Reitveld who was interested in making furniture that encouraged the occupant to “sit actively” and be conscious of their body. Therefore, I decided to design my courtyard around the “De Stijil” movement of which Reitveld was a major contributor. Every element was reduced to its most basic form to create a sense of abstraction.

Sato-Umi literally means village-sea. It is a coastal area where biological productivity and biodiversity have been increased through human interaction. My capstone project is located in Ishinomaki, Miyagi prefecture in the North-East of Japan, in the area that was worst hit by the March 11, 2011 Tohoku region tsunami and earthquake. The main issues to be addressed here were creating a sense of community, the degradation of the shoreline ecology, and the loss of human life. My solution was to employ a system of three landform typologies which not only adapt to the local site conditions but also prepare a staging ground for larger scale social and ecological forces. This was done by creating module units that allow for the expansion of each typology or force as needed over time. The landform types are as follows: Upland, Buffer, and Memorial. Upland refers to habitable areas that have been raised up out of the floodplain. Buffer areas are the basis for the restoration of the shoreline ecology and for treating runoff. The memorial allows people to tell their story about the tsunami, commemorate who they lost, and discuss Ishinomaki’s future.

My task was to develop the roof garden and interior courtyard for a physical therapy rehabilitation center in northern Colorado. “Berkana” is a Celtic word that means “transformation of beings into a new form.”For the exploration garden on the roof, I wanted to create an experience that reflected the landscape surrounding the clinic through recreating the varied ecological zones present in the region. I wanted the garden to make visitors have an outward experience, to be able to enjoy the natural world around them. The interior garden was based on the principles of the Japanese tea garden. It is to be a reflective space that prompts spiritual and mental repose while reflecting the environment of the Rockies. The design is simple, even austere, to create a calming environment. The garden has many niches for private seating but the floor plan is open enough that the garden accommodates a variety of uses.

Proposed neighborhood redevelopment and character. Photoshop and Sketchup

I created this master plan for redeveloping a blighted neighborhood just south of downtown Denver, CO. The site is just as aesthetically unpleasing as it is unsafe. Key to my plan was turning Evans Ave. into a central corridor that crossed the freeway and then the river. This was ideal for pedestrian and vehicular movement. While developing my plan I thought of the Evans Ave. corridor as a bridge linking three distinct islands. Creating a walkable community was also key to my plans. After several permutations, I decided to divide the “mainland” on the east side of the Evans Ave. corridor in order to create a large park corridor reminiscent of the Emerald Necklace in Boston, MA.

Construction Documents These construction documents created in AutoCAD and Dynascape are the product of a rigorous revision process between my clients and me based on their designs and specifications. From these drawings, bids were created and then these plans were given to the contractor to use for construction.
