I was 22. I was three weeks away from living my dream of being a horsemanin Montana. Living a carefree life, a young man’s adventure-type life.
When Your Dreams Are Crushed
And then, one night, two friends and I were coming home from a ropingcompetition and up ahead was a deer, stunned by my headlights. I swervedto miss her. And in that moment my life changed. Fortunately, my friendswere thrown free from my Jeep. I, however, experienced the full impact ofthe Jeep rolling over me. Crushing my spine, my body and my dreams withits weight and force.
I lay there, unconscious. When the medics arrived my friends inquired about me. The medics said, there was no hope, asheet was pulled over my face.
Fortunately, my friends prevailed and insisted that I could not be dead…..and the medics listened….and heard a faintheart beat. I was urgently taken to the local hospital emergency room, where the doctor on duty happened to be a familyfriend. He immediately called my family “Come quick, there isn’t much time.” A helicopter was flown in, there was noheliport…it landed in the parking lot and then flew me to Northwestern University Hospital. Upon arrival I wasevaluated and given 24 hours to live.
When Others Don’t Believe
You see, the doctors could only see what was on the x-rays and in the test results. They could only see that my heart wasso crushed and twisted that it was like a wet dish cloth that was squeezed and rung out. They could only see that therewas air and fluid collecting around my heart, they could only see that my spine was severely damaged. They could onlysee that my journey was about to end. You see, they only saw me as unable. All of these people were caught up in whatis, not what could be...
When You Reach Deep Down, To Rise Up
But what they could not see was the determination that was inside me. You see these doctors could not see because theywere looking backwards, backwards at statistics, at histories from long ago. They saw me as mangled flesh and bones. But there was determination…..and a miracle.
The doctors came in to x-ray my torso. In the room, there stood my fatherand my mother, expecting to hear the worst.
They all were stunned the doctors, my father, my mother, the air and thewater that had surrounded my heart had vanished, it was absorbed, it wasgone. I had chosen to live. And now the choice was mine….how was I goingto live. The doctors now told me that I would not walk again and my lifewould be really affected because of my injuries.
When You Choose to Live YOUR Life
At first I thought….”What am I going to do?” But I was determined not to let this injury or what the doctors thoughtaffect the outcome. I chose to give them the benefit of the doubt, after all, they didn’t know me. It was my choicewhether or not this perspective was going to define me.

A Life Journey, A Gift of the Horse
It is a journey that has taken me, and I am sure your life taken you to unimaginable places, has unearthed from youunimaginable emotions, and explored the potential of who you have been created to be. Yes, the journey takes youto people, places and things. But the journey goes deep within you. You explore your ability, your determination, your courage, you come to an ever present and an ever new understanding of who you really are.
Observe the Nuances
Michael leads us on this journey by making us aware of our own expressions and body language, which is theprimary language that the horse knows and understands. Michael’s goal is to establish a line of communicationand build a relationship with the horse and human by addressing the subtle changes in the horse expressions andbody language.
You Can’t Change the Circumstances So Change Who You Become Be-cause of Them.
The circumstances in our lives urge us to release our belief that we can control our world and the outcomes.Michael’s goal is to build a rapport with the horse and human rather than use aides for domination, control, manipulation or submission. He shows us how that we succeed through releasing, through observing, andenjoying the journey, rather than being preoccupied by thedestination.

Viewer Testimonials
Dear Michael,
I have been watching your series, "Gift of the Horse" on RFD. You are truly an inspiration. Your subtlemethods of being with the horses is awesome to watch. It has let me know it is OK to be slower and notfeel the need to make my horses" run around" to get a lesson accomplished. Thank you for sharing yourknowledge and your methods. I look forward to each of your episodes. Blessings to you.
Hi Mike,
I got a glimpse of the end of one of your shows about a week ago and was intrigued to learn more, andthen today working on a paper on horsemanship I caught your program working with collection of the bayThoroughbred. I was curious to see what a cowboy in a wheelchair would have to show me about round-pen work.
I wasn't disappointed because what I saw was a cerebral approach to the horse....something that is rare, rare in most all the clinicians I have deeply researched. I was impressed by how you broke things down tothe level you do in seeing the difference in the horse doing things mechanically or willingly. I work withpeople and their horses and much of what I heard you talking is my exact philosophy I teach, but there is adisappointment I feel because many of the people around here are so interested in just getting on and kick-ing to go and pulling to stop that these intimate concepts of horse emotions is lost on them. I am currentlyworking up my little Arabian yearling filly and she is all about calmness and curiosity. I am approachingher from the mental and emotional aspects and she is responding with the physical part. Like you empha-sized....get the head right and the body willingly follows.
Hi Michael, just caught your TV show and really enjoyed it. What a blessing andinspiration you are. I can relate to you as 5 weeks ago I had a serious motorcycleaccident with 7 pelvic fractures, 8 ribs, 3 compressed vertebrae, right knee fract. With God's help and lots of prayer I’m doing well and expect to be back on my feet ina few months. Thank you for your words& God bless you.
I have just recently been introduced to your RFD TV show. As I have been studying andpracticing natural horsemanship for the past 16 years, I was deeply touched by how yourapproach understands the importance of true connection. How we communicate through ourpersonal energy and what our feelings are saying at that moment. I so appreciate your ability tobring attention to how that translates to a horse.
I look forward to watching more of you in the future. Thank you for your commitment toenlightening horsemanship.
