    In the April edition of the B-T Newsletter, Mr. Mike Recker and Mr. Jeff Rohrig were introduced to readers as the 2012 recipients of the Tradition of Excellence Award. During the April 3 banquet in their honor, The David Scott Foundation included one additional surprise recipient, Miss Dianne Desler.

    Destination:DISCOVERY summer camp classes are nearing capacity! No refunds will be given after May 15. Camp registration is entirely online at brownell.edu/destinationdiscovery.

    • Camp dates are June 11-15; July 16-20; July 23-27; and July 30-August 3.

    • All materials for projects and activities are included in the class registration fee

    • Lunches are not provided. Campers registered for both the morning and afternoon sessions in June, July, and August will need to bring a sack lunch to eat with their class.

    You can enhance your children’s summer by sending them to Brownell-Talbot for this one-of-a-kind experience. Each week features a variety of great classes to choose from for children age 4 and older.

    Instrumental Concert Set May 17Make plans to attend the annual spring instrumental concert

    on Thursday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m. in the Swanson Auditorium. Performers will include Middle and Upper School string and band ensembles as well as Mrs. Comer’s and Mrs. Jones’s fourth-grade classes playing recorder. All performers should wear formal uniform with nice shoes. Students should arrive at the following times:

    • 5:50 p.m. – All strings meet in the backstage hallway. Fifth-seventh grade electric instruments (guitar/bass/keyboard) players meet on stage for sound check

    • 6:15 p.m. – Fifth-seventh grade horns and percussion meet in the hall outside Ms. Christenson’s room. Eighth grade band meet in Mr. Gould’s room. Fourth graders meet Mrs. Robson in the cafeteria.

    • 6:30 p.m.– Upper School band meet in Mr. Gould’s room. The concert is free and will feature classic songs by The

    Beatles, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie, and Herbie Hancock, as well as a selection of Canadian fiddle tunes that ties in with the theme of this year’s Headmaster’s Festival. Please call (402) 556-3772 to make handicap-accessible seating arrangements.

    Committee of that organization; and was elected to the ISACS Board of Directors in 2000, serving for two years. She has led several visiting teams, served on the search committee for a new ISACS director, and attended numerous ISACS and National Association of Independent Schools annual conferences and summer institutes.

    Under her leadership, Miss Desler has worked tirelessly to create a healthy school climate with many diverse constituencies. The curriculum has expanded, and enrollment has nearly doubled.

    She oversaw numerous successful capital projects including the renovation of the fine arts wing, construction of the Worthington Hall and Middle School additions, reconstruction of Swanson Auditorium, extensive renovation of the Science wing, and construction of the new fitness center.

    Under her guidance, the School continues to be one of the finest independent schools in the country, and one of which we all can be proud. For 42 years Miss Desler has been an example of professional excellence, innovation, leadership, service, vision, enthusiasm, and a genuine love of the entire B-T family. Please take a moment to personally thank her for her leadership and commitment to Brownell-Talbot School.

    Family Fun Day Set May 22The BTPA will host the annual Family Fun Day on Tuesday,

    May 22, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in and near the Upper School gymnasium. All families and students are encouraged to attend. Students in grades preschool through four are required to have parent supervision. Tickets for the games are on sale in the office (see Mrs. Alleta Scott). Tickets are 4 for $1. Please see the ticket order form elsewhere in this newsletter for more information.

  • B-T Aquatics: We Swim for Good TimesSplaSh Meet ReSultS

    February: Forty-three swimmers participated in our February Splash Meet, including B-T students Isabela Martinez Thibodeau, ’19, Sofia Martinez Thibodeau, ’20, Emalie Wightman, ’20, Meg Wightman, ’22, and Connor Liekhus, ’24.

    March: Sixty-four swimmers participated in the March Splash Meet, including B-T students I. Martinez Thibodeau, S. Martinez Thibodeau, and Liekhus.

    uSa SwiMMing Sanctioned Meet ReSultSHenrik Nelson, ’22, won the 25 yard and 50 yard breaststroke

    at the March 2012 Midwestern Swimming Qualifier/8 & Under Final Meet. He achieved new best times in both the 25 and 50 freestyles. He went on to score relay points for GOAL at the Midwestern Swimming Division 1 Championships.

    Elisabeth Hailu, ’19, scored many points for GOAL with her four third-place finishes and new best times in the 100 butterfly, 200 individual medley, and 100 individual medley. Her 100 individual medley time was a new national age group “AAA” time.

    Hannah Hailu, ’21, swam in both the qualifier meet and in the Division 1 Meet. She won the 50 back and earned second in the 50 free, 25 butterfly, and 50 butterfly. Her butterfly times were both new personal bests. She went on to score for GOAL in the 100 back, 100 butterfly, and 200 freestyle at the Division 1 Championships.

    Ruth Hailu, ’17, had a great Division 1 meet. She scored in several events including a third place in the 50 backstroke and a fifth place in the 200 backstroke that were both new “AA” time standards. She also achieved a new “A” time in the 200 individual medley with a ninth-place finish.

    Booster Club Thanks You B-T Families,

    Thank you all for your help this year with the B-T Booster Club. We raised enough money to provide coaches with the items they “wished for” from the Booster Club.

    The list includes: coaches’ polo shirts; weight room record board; coaches end of school year outing; girls’ varsity basketball uniforms; coach bus for varsity teams; girls’ varsity tennis uniforms; discus fence; track uniforms; dragon push sleds for weight training; indoor carpet runners; volleyball uniforms; volleyball net rack; girls’ golf visors; boys’ golf hats; swim fins; hand paddles for swim team; speech presentation stands; coach bus for state speech; Zildjian cymbal for music; baritone saxophone for music; and cheerleading supplies.

    As you can see the Booster Club has provided items for all areas of the school’s activities this year. We couldn’t have accomplished this without the help of the wonderful B-T families and students.

    Whether you helped in the concession, donated baked goods, grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, sold merchandise, provided food or purchased a membership, we are grateful and thank you.

    Field Day Set May 23Lower and Middle School students will enjoy the annual

    Field Day on Wednesday, May 23. The opening ceremony begins at 12:45 p.m. for grades kindergarten through eight near the flagpole in the Happy Hollow Circle Drive. Events will begin immediately following the opening ceremony and end at approximately 3 p.m. Eighth-grade students and faculty will assist the students. All students involved may wear shorts or jeans and T-shirts. Lower and Middle School parents are welcome to watch and enjoy a complimentary lunch.

    Junior kindergarten and preschool will hold Field Day events in the Roberts Gymnasium beginning at 9:30 a.m. Awards and snacks are scheduled for 10:30 a.m.

    Advanced Placement ExamsAP Exams are scheduled May 7-11 and May 14-18. All Upper School students enrolled in an AP course will

    take the AP exam. The registration process is coordinated through Brownell-Talbot. The AP bulletin and letter was included in the January Parent/Teacher conference packet.     Family ConnectionUpper School students and parents are encouraged to utilize Family Connection (connection.naviance.com/b-ts) during the

    summer months. Students have created a username and password and parents have received information on creating an account during the college counseling parent meetings. Family Connection is a wonderful college resource as students have the opportunity to research colleges, create a college list and indicate interest level, research scholarships and summer programs, compile activities and accomplishments, and record college visits. All college-related correspondence will be e-mailed through Family Connection.

    Standardized Test DatesThe final ACT and SAT exams for the current academic year will be the first two Saturdays in June. Juniors are expected to have

    completed at least one standardized test by the conclusion of this year. The 2012-2013 testing calendar is posted on the Web site.

    Save the DateActivities Banquet

    Mark your calendars and save the date of

    Thursday, May 24, 2012

    For the annual Activities Banquet at the Scott Conference Center at UNO.

    The social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. The 6 p.m. banquet includes dinner and a program. Awards and honors will be presented for all Nebraska School Activities Association activities including athletics, cheerleading, speech, band, and chorus.

    The B-T Booster Club invites all Upper School students involved in NSAA activities at no charge, though an RSVP is required. All other Upper School students, parents, faculty, and coaches are also invited. This is a great opportunity to celebrate the students’ hard work and success.

    Prom and Post Prom 2012The Junior-Senior Prom dinner and dance is scheduled Friday,

    May 4, 2012, at the Livestock Exchange Building, 4920 S. 30th St. All Upper School students will be dismissed at 12 p.m. on Friday, May 4. The social hour begins at 6:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. The menu choices and cost appeared in the invitations. The faculty, members of the junior and senior classes, their families, and escorts may attend the dinner. The dance follows from 9 p.m.-midnight and costs $10. All Upper School students are invited.

    Members of the freshman class are invited to a pre-prom dinner at 7 p.m. at the Omaha Press Club. Sophomores are invited to dine at Stokes in the Old Market at 7 p.m.

    The freshmen and sophomores will be bussed from their dinners to the Livestock Exchange Building, and then again to the post prom party. Parents, however, must arrange transportation to the dinners and from the post prom party.

    Post prom runs from 12:30-3:30 a.m. at Dave & Buster’s and is sponsored by the B-T Parents’ Association.

    The post prom committee seeks donations of gift cards for gas/food/clothing, i-Pods, headphones, i-Pod/cell phone accessories — any hot prize a teenager would enjoy. Please contact committee chair Jan Vrana at [email protected] with questions.

    Final Exam Schedule SetUpper School students will take final exams

    May 29-31. Upper School Head Bill Harrell sent a letter with the exam schedule and end of year checkout procedures to all Upper School students. Those who have not received this information should contact Mr. Harrell at (402) 556-3772 or [email protected].

    Outstanding Economics Student NamedJunior Emma Hussain was named the Outstanding

    Economics student for the 2011-2012 school year. She attended a dinner and awards ceremony at the Federal Reserve Bank in Omaha in April.

    The UNO and UNL Centers for Economic Education sponsor the dinner which recognizes students in the economics curriculum of eastern Nebraska and highlights the importance of economics in the curriculum.

    Outstanding Sophomore NamedSydney Woods, ’14, was named Brownell-Talbot’s

    representative for the Omaha Exchange Club’s Outstanding Sophomore Program for 2012.

    Optimist Oratorical Contest ResultsSeveral B-T Upper School students participated in the 2012 Optimist Oratorical Contest held on March 7.     NHS NewsNational Honor Society members continue

    volunteering at the Benson Baptist Church. Additionally, members have the annual opportunity to volunteer at the Child Saving Institute. This opportunity is open to all Upper School students.

    By the end of the year, Brownell-Talbot’s chapter members will have fulfilled their commitments of two volunteer sessions. In addition, they will have spent a year cross-aging with Middle or Lower School classrooms and providing support for various School events. This NHS year concludes on Honors Day with a speech by National Honor Society President Chris Ames and a tapping ceremony inducting new sophomores and juniors into the Brownell-Talbot National Honor Society.

    Rotary Club Senior RecognitionCongratulations to Sammi Bray, ’12, who represented

    Brownell-Talbot at the annual Rotary Club Senior Recognition Day Luncheon in April. Bray received a $200 scholarship with this honor. Recipients are chosen based on all-around achievement with special emphasis on service to class, school, community, and citizenship. One recipient is chosen from each of the 25 metro-area high schools.

  • US Boys’ Track Team Win Conestoga InviteThe boys’ track team took first at the Conestoga Early Bird

    Invitational. The boys’ team is young and deep this season with 31 members. Sophomore Arlie Myers placed first in the long jump at the Nebraska Wesleyan indoor meet and at the Bennington relay meets. Freshman Dylan Burkley placed first at the Conestoga event in the high jump. Freshman Jordan Kerrey earned first place at Conestoga in the 100 meter dash.

    Other members of the team this year include seniors Josh Cohen, Zach Ehresman, Alex Coakley, Kenny Harvey, Jay Li, Forrest Selvey, and Ruben Zendejas; juniors Alejandro Anderson, Max Buls, Andrew Chen, NK Ibemesi, Will Gustafson, John Jordan, and Lorenzo Rivera; sophomores Will Haskell, David Karimi, Austin Kent, Stephen Knofczynski, Tripp Skutt, Jack Smith, and Josh Zhu; and freshmen Nate Cheney, Robert Goetschkes, Drew Ketterson, Sean Mayo, Jordan Proby, Jon Vrana, and Dylan Witt.

    Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer UpdateThe Brownell-Talbot/Roncalli/Concordia boys soccer team

    record at deadline is 1-8. The boys team beat Conestoga in a shootout 3-2 in March. Team members include freshmen Pedro Castro, Powers Dicus, Danny Miller, Tommy Miller, Erik Kulp, Caravaggio Caniglia, and junior Michael Zhong. The head coach is Chad Crouch.

    The Brownell-Talbot/Concordia/DC West girls team has a record of 5-5. The team has defeated Bryan, Roncalli, Seward, Auburn, and Lincoln High. B-T girls playing this season are sophomores Chloe Dana and Hannah Emery and junior Denise Dantzler. The head coach is Shad Beam.

    Girls Track Team UpdateThe Upper School girls’ track team has 16 team members. The

    Raiders have participated in five track meets as of deadline. Senior Taylor White-Welchen has earned six first-place

    medals in sprints to date. White-Welchen set the meet record in the 200-meter dash at the Lewiston Invitational. Freshman Kenzi Larkin placed first in the high jump at the Conestoga Invitational. Other team members include seniors Jennifer Coccia, Haley Mathews, and Nicole Vazquez-Chanlatte; juniors Arielle Bloemer, Cami Oyler, Lydia Schieuer, and Aisha Yapp; sophomores Symphony Davis and Mercedes Kent; and freshmen Hannah Brown, Megan Harrell, Blythe Lust, Anjali Murthy, and Diamonde O’Connor.

    Post Season Basketball HonorsSeniors Grace Bartels, Zach Ehresman, and Haley

    Mathews were all named Class C2 basketball all-state honorable mention and honorable mention all-area by the Omaha World Herald.

    Boys’ Golf Team Undefeated in DualsThe boys’ golf team began the season undefeated in dual

    matches and with two top 10 finishes in tournaments. The Raiders placed seventh among 20 teams in the Bellevue East Invitational with a 361 and were runners-up in the Lewis Central Invitational among 14 teams with a 334. Tyler Ehresman, ’14, placed third with a score of 78, and Saif Shah, ’12, placed ninth with a score of 81.

    Girls’ Tennis Matures, Bags WinsSolid team performances earned girls’ tennis three competitive

    victories early this season. The Raiders knocked off Waverly 3-1, edged Blair 5-4, and rolled past Gross Catholic 6-3. Senior Sammi Bray and freshman Sadie Rich made strong showings at No.1 doubles, beating Duchesne Academy’s top pair and recording a team-high four wins thus far. After losses to state championship contenders Duchesne and Elkhorn South, as well as a close defeat at the hands of Norris, the Raiders record was 3-3 at deadline.

    The junior varsity, which has a lot of beginner players, has yet to win a dual, but remains committed to improving knowledge of the game. The state tournament is in mid-May. Home matches are played at the Omaha Country Club.

    Srs. Earn 1st., Jrs. 2nd at Iowa Western Community College Quiz Bowl

    Fourteen Brownell-Talbot students competed in the Iowa Western Community College 11th annual Math Day.

    Brownell-Talbot competed against 28 other schools in Division B and students were divided by age.

    The team of Anjali Murthy, ’15, David Bakos, ’14, and David Karimi, ’14, won its first two rounds and lost its third.

    The team of Caravaggio Caniglia, ’15, Arlie Myers, ’14, and Jessica Zhou ’14, placed third, earning bronze medals.

    Both the junior and senior teams won their first several rounds but then the junior team of Linda Liu, Andrew Chen, Alison Brockman, and Michael Zhong lost a round sending them to the consolation bracket.

    They won earning a spot in the finals where they faced the Brownell-Talbot senior team of Jonathan Trinh, Jay Li, Zach Ehresman, and Josh Cohen.

    The seniors prevailed and took first place and the gold medal with the silver to the juniors.

    LS Music UpdateSpRing Fling!

    On April 19, the third and fourth graders, and the Serenading Raiders, shared their musical talents in a concert. Each class showed their expertise on the Orff instruments. They learned their parts by reading the notes. In the choral selections they independently sang in harmonies. The Serenading Raiders performed a collection of Rodgers & Hammerstein selections.

    MuSic in ouR SchoolS weekLower School had approximately 125 visitors in class during

    Music in Our Schools Week. Those who attended experienced the music classroom, played instruments, and sang along. The students were excited to teach their families what they know.

    SeRenading RaideRS The Serenading Raiders sang for an Arbor Day Celebration at

    Lauritzen Gardens April 29. The group culminates its year with a May 6 tour to Lakeside Retirement Village and The Arboretum.

    2012-2013 SeRenading RaideRSThe Serenading Raiders will continue to rehearse on Tuesdays

    and Thursdays in fall 2012. Third grade will meet on Tuesdays and fourth grade on Thursdays. Hopefully this will help parents in scheduling activities so their student can participate in choir.

    FouRth-gRade RecoRdeRSAll students in the fourth grade studied the recorder this

    semester. On Thursday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m. the students will join the Middle and Upper School instrumentalists in concert in the Swanson Auditorium. The students will play several tunes and gain a glimpse of the joy of participating in strings and/or band as they prepare to move up to Middle School as fifth graders.

    The team of Josh Bartz, ’16, Katie Bevil, ’16, Molly Myers, ’16, Lauryn Caster, ’17, and Sean Gardner, ’17, were undefeated in the first rounds of the ESU # 3 Quiz Bowl, and battled back during final rounds to place fourth among 24 teams. The team of Rachel Cruse, ’16, Julia Fiksinski, ’16, Abhinav Suresh, ’16, Kari Fossum, ’17, and Kathryn Johnson ’17, lost in the fourth round, but ended the day with two consecutive wins over the only undefeated team, Plattsmouth. They won the final match by a single bonus question.

    participated in the St. Vincent de Paul event. Despite scoring more points than any other team, they ended up one question short in the final match and placed second.

    4th Graders Plan Pioneer Day Field TripThe fourth-grade classes head to Grand Island for Pioneer Day

    Wednesday, May 9, to experience “A Day at a Rural School” at the Stuhr Museum. Students should dress in clothing that children would have worn during the 1880s and bring a lunch appropriate to that time period. Students must be at the lower circle drive by 7:30 a.m. to board the bus that day. The students should arrive back at B-T by 4:30 p.m. that day for pick up. More information will be provided to parents at a later date.

    Quarters for KicksWith much help, the Preschool and Junior Kindergartners

    raised $350 for their Quarters for Kicks campaign. The money raised was used to buy shoes for the students at Moru Atiang Primary, B-T’s sister school in Soroti, Uganda.

    Rotary Honor Roll NomineesThe 2012 eighth-grade nominees for the Rotary Club of

    Omaha Eighth-Grade Honor Roll luncheon are Jordan Willett and Julia Fiksinski. They will attend a luncheon honoring all area nominees on May 1 at the CenturyLink Center.

  • State Geography Bee CompetitorAs winner of the Brownell-Talbot School Geography Bee in

    January, Shane Fleming, ’17, took the written test for the State Geography Bee and qualified to be in the top 100 state finalists. He competed in the state bee at UNO. He made the elimination round to determine whether he would compete in the finals, but did not qualify. Shane made B-T very proud by answering some tough questions correctly in his preliminary rounds.

    5th Graders Learn Chinese CalligraphyAfter the fifth grade finished their unit on Asian geography,

    Chinese students from Bellevue University taught the class Chinese calligraphy.

    Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben Select Essay WinnersThe following sixth grade students wrote award-winning

    nominations for the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor Award program: Vijay Menon, Jarrett Proby, John Vovk, Audrey Graves, Diva Agarwal, Ryan Ehresman, and John McElderry. This program is designed to teach students the importance of recognizing good neighbors and good deeds in their community.

    Middle School Mathletes CompeteSix of the middle school mathletes competed in Creighton

    Prep’s annual math contest in March. Julia Fiksinski, ’16, placed second and Shane Fleming, ’17, tied for 12th in the individual contest. Both competed in a quiz bowl round and did very well. The next events were the Leap Frog test for two people and a team test for four people. The team of Fleming, Adam Hedican, ’17, Tej Murthy, ’17, and Elise Siffring, ’16, placed third in the top division. The Leap Frog team of Fiksinski and Molly Myers, ’16, placed second.

    4th Graders May Try InstrumentsOn Wednesday, May 23, fourth-grade students will receive

    an introduction to band. A trumpet, saxophone, trombone, and percussion will be available for students to try.

    Maydew Accepted for Summer ProgramEvan Maydew, ’20, was accepted into a two-week summer

    program at Northwestern University, Illinois, called Cool Chemical Capers. As part of the application process, Maydew had to write a 250 word essay and have qualifying test scores.

    Parent Ambassador Buddy Program for 2012-2013! The Parent Ambassador Committee was created to reach out to the wider community on behalf of Brownell-Talbot School. The

    PAC works with Admissions to enhance and personalize the admissions process. Activities include: • Help host school open houses, and participate in new family tours and orientations;• Assist in follow up with prospective families with personal phone calls and thank you notes.• Consider hosting new recruitment or retention events; • Assist with re-enrollment and retention activities; • Serve as new parent liaison to help implement a "Buddy System" for current and newly admitted families; • Assist in organizing other social events for new parents and their students; • Serve as an advocate for Brownell by educating parents and the greater community about the benefits of an independent

    Dear Parents, It’s hard to believe but we are announcing the final BTPA meeting of the current school year! In lieu of our regular

    meeting in the Fireside Room, our May meeting will be the annual BTPA Spring Luncheon on Tuesday, May 15, at the Happy Hollow Country Club at 11:30 a.m. Please plan to attend as we would like to thank our parents and volunteers for their help this year. The invitation is enclosed in this newsletter. If you’re interested in learning more about BTPA or interested in serving on a committee or volunteering for a future event, please consider attending this luncheon ... or just come to meet other parents!

    The BTPA still has a few end of the year events planned: Freshman/Sophomore Prom Dinners, chaired by Inna Weedman and Jill Bydalek, and the one and only Family Fun Day May 22 chaired by Kristina Jenkins.   • BUSINESS OFFICE BOOK STOREEND OF SCHOOL YEAR PROCEDURES

    As the school year draws to a close, there are some procedures relative to Middle and Upper School student accounts that parents may find beneficial. To guide you through our processes, here are our expectations. All activities below will take place either Friday, May 25 or Thursday, May 31 in the Lower School Gym.

    LOCKSLocks are to be returned to Mrs. Donna Andersen after the students’ books and all personal belongings are removed from the lockers. Locks are provided by Brownell-Talbot to assist students in safeguarding their possessions while on School property. If the student returns the lock at the end of the school year, there is no charge for the lock. If the lock is not returned by May 31, the student will be assessed a $10 fee for a replacement lock.

    PHOTO ID BADGES (key cards)Photo ID badges serve as our security process to allow students access to the various school buildings during the school year only. These must be turned in at the end of the school year so the security codes can be deactivated. If the student fails to return their ID badge, a $25 lost badge fee will be assessed. There will be a drop box near the Lower School Gym entrance to place the key cards.

    TEXTBOOKSBooks may be returned if the parent wishes a partial refund of the original purchase price. Books must be in good condition and must be planned for continued use in school curriculum the following school year to be eligible for buy back. As long as the book is in good condition and will continue to be used, a parent can expect to receive a refund of 50 percent of the original cost of the book. Paperback books are never included in the buy back process.

    On Friday, May 25, seventh-, eighth-, and 12th-grade students will take any books they desire to return for possible buy back to the Lower School Gym. There will be tables staffed with faculty where students can return their books. Faculty will do a quick review of the books to ensure there is no writing or excessive highlighting in the books. If the books are accepted by the faculty, the books will then be reviewed by the Business Office to ensure the condition of the books is such that they can be resold. Any books deemed non-returnable will remain with the student for them to take home or the books can be left with the School and they will be donated to a local charity.

    On Thursday, May 31, fifth-, sixth-, ninth-, 10th-, and 11th-grade students will take any books they desire to return for possible buy back to the Lower School Gym.

    Gala Auction Preview – Don’t Miss It! Come to the Fieldhouse on Thursday, May 10, between 3-4:30 p.m. and Friday, May 11, between 7:30-9:30 a.m. for a “Sneak Peek” at all the wonderful silent and live auction items available at the gala. Bring your students so they can show you their class projects and what items they want you to bid on for them. You will also have the opportunity to place your bids early at the Sponsor a Program table – one less table to navigate during the Side Show (Silent Auction).

    Silent Auction Closing Times – The Silent Auction begins at 6 p.m. with some categories closing at 7:20 p.m. and the rest closing at 7:30 p.m. Remember to arrive on time to sign up for our very popular Great Gatherings as the limited spaces fill up fast.

    Ringmaster’s Raffle – Everyone will want to buy one or more chances to win this year’s Ringmaster’s Raffle (night of gala raffle) prize: a 55 inch 3D LED HDTV with a 3D Blu-Ray DVD player, and a “Harry Potter 3D” starter pack. Tickets will be sold during the Gala Auction Previews and the Silent Auction at Gala. If you can’t attend Gala and want a chance to win this fabulous prize, stop by the Development Office to purchase tickets from Renae Mackender or DeVon Coble. Tickets must be paid by check or cash. You don’t need to be present to win. Good luck!

    Quick Check – We encourage you to complete the Quick Check form found elsewhere in this newsletter to speed your check-out at the end of the evening. You may drop it off at School or return it the night of Gala.

    Gala Attire – If you don’t wish to wear circus attire such as trapeze artists, lion tamers, or clowns, then the dress is casual – jeans to business casual. Dinner will be in the Big-Top tent, but if the weather is cool, a wrap or jacket may be needed.

    Parking – Valet parking in the Happy Hollow parking lot.Gala Invitations – Step right up and join us Under the Big Top to enjoy a memorable evening with friends, B-T parents, and

    grandparents while you support our School’s major fund raiser. Please bring adult friends, family members, and prospective B-T parents to the Gala. Mail your RSVP or contact Renae Mackender at (402) 556-3772, ext. 1013, as soon as possible.

    Parent Tables – Join your friends at a table or make new friends at another table. Just let us know whom you want to sit with or just sit with other parents of students in your child’s class.

    Cash Donation – If you are unable to attend Gala this year, you can still make a cash donation, sponsor your child’s field trip, or support a school program. Donations are 100 percent tax deductible. Donate online or contact DeVon Coble at [email protected] or (402) 556-3772, ext. 1012.

    Gold Raffle Tickets – Don’t forget to return your tickets to the School. The lucky winner receives $1,000 in cash!Silent Auction Student Art Projects – Each class has created a special one-of-a-kind art project just for Gala. Each student has

    had a hand in creating their class’s project. They are all true keepsakes.Gala Auction Catalogs – If you have made your reservation, you will receive a catalog in your child’s backpack or the mail;

    otherwise, stop by the School to pick up a copy.

    Great GatheringsGreat Gatherings are the most popular items in the silent auction category. They are very fun events and adventures carefully

    planned by B-T parents and staff members and have a limited amount of spaces to be sold. At Gala you can sign up for one or more spaces to attend an event. This is a great opportunity to get to know other B-T parents and students.

    Fright Night – Don’t miss out on this haunting experience. Travel by bus with Mr. Hamel and Mr. Recker for dinner, followed by a guided tour of some of the metro area’s most haunted sites. Participants will received a specially designed T-shirt and other ghostly surprises. Date in October to be determined. Open to grades seven, eight, and nine for school year 2012-13. $125 per student.

    Brownell-Talbot Overnight Bash – Hey all you third, fourth, and fifth graders, join Mrs. Petrulis, Mrs. Comer, Mr. Dorsey, and coaches Rohrig, Brown, and Neal for this one-of-a-kind Bash. This event sells out every year – don’t miss it! You get your own Bash T-shirt. Forty spaces are available for students in grades three, four, and five during the 2011-2012 academic year. $125 guarantees you a spot in the Upper School Gym. Saturday, June 2, from 8 p.m. until Sunday, June 3, at 8 a.m.

    A Great Gathering of Friends– A special evening in the beautiful home of Suzanne and Rudy Kotula. This fun-filled night will feature a delicious dinner prepared by Abraham Catering and a full bar with wine from 1316 Jones Beverage Company. Your hosts will include special wines from their private wine cellar. Date in spring 2013 to be determined. 12 spaces available. $400 a couple.

  • Learn the Art of Sushi – Experience the art of rolling sushi one-on-one with a sushi chef in the home of Brian and Debbie Wood. A sushi chef from Blue will show guests how to roll sushi and give a background of the cuisine in Japan and how it has evolved in the U.S. Other wonderful appetizers will be served along with your favorite beverages and, of course, dessert!     Welcome Our New Head of School – Spend a casual evening with Brownell-Talbot’s new Head of School – Sylvia Rodríguez Vargas and her husband Brian Vargas. This will be a relaxing and fun time to visit with Mr. and Mrs. Vargas and other B-T parents. Cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served, and a mini-dessert station available.     An Evening in Napa – Taste the wines of Napa Valley right here in Omaha! You will enjoy a buffet of heavy hors d’oeuvres served pool side in a beautiful setting at the home of Jim and Melanie Smith in Fairacres. A sommelier will on hand for this wine tasting experience.     Pool Party for the 2012 Kindergartners – Food and lots of fun! Join other B-T kindergartners’ families pool side at the home of Robert and Tammy Wagner for an afternoon of fun. This will be a great time to get to know your child’s classmates and their parents. Date to be determined. 2011-2012 kindergarten families. 22 family spaces. $100 per family.

    Party Time for the 2012 First Graders – It’s a pool party for first graders and so much more! This day at Swimtastic will be packed with food and swimming. The balloon lady will be on hand to entertain everyone. This is a great way to get to know your child’s classmates and their parents. Hosted by Stephen and Annika George and Charles and Danielle Brown. Saturday, June 2, 2-4 p.m. For 2011-2012 first graders and their families. $75 for first graders. $25 for parents and siblings.

    It’s a Strike! for the 2012 Second Graders – This event will be right up your alley! Join in the fun for an afternoon of bowling at Mockingbird Lanes (4870 S. 96 St.) We will have bowling, pizza, soda, treats, and more.     Cheerleader Pizza and Pep Party – Please join the B-T cheerleaders after the home football game on Friday, September 21, for a post-game Pizza and Pep Party! All girls who attend the party will receive V.I.P. seating at the football game and a Raiderette Cheerleading T-shirt. After the game, there will be a pizza party with the Upper School cheerleaders. We will play cheer games, make crafts, and even have a “cheer-off” contest. The girls will also learn a fun dance and cheer. This is a great event for all aspiring cheerleaders! Limit 20 girls.     Join us for a family-friendly event that includes a 0.8 mile walk on the paved trail along the riverfront from the Gallup Organization campus to the CenturyLink Center.

    View safety “mile” posts along the way, and enter the arena to view the swimming pool for the 2012 U.S.A. Olympic Team Trials. All participants will receive a water bottle, a commemorative

    gold medal, and an exclusive first-look at the competition pool.

    July 30-August 3 from 8 a.m.-3p.m. Students in grades four through 12 will learn basic and advanced game strategies. Local chess masters will

    challenge beginning and advanced players to improve their games.

    Camp is at Brownell-Talbot School. Students are asked to bring a sack lunch.
