I try to take this century less personally than the last one. There are dogs barking
all over the world, not just next door. I feed
the ducks at the pond simply because
I would want someone to do the same
for my children. No matter how many ducks,
more come. They seem to be adapting well
to the current administration. The country
has a new tax policy: we have to give our extra money to someone with less,
and they can't be related. Everyone is walking around with signs that show
their bank balances and genealogies. Some guy sued all the way to the Supreme Court,
arguing that, since everyone is related
to everyone else if you go back far enough,
we can only give our extra money to animals.
This, in a sense, is why I feed the ducks,
who are not only not related to me, but will never
wake up one day to realize in disgust
how vain and conventional they really are,
then waste their bread on their sadness.
