Our welcome to youBrooklana Angus is located at Brooklana, on the edge of the Eastern Dorrigo escarpment, some 23 kilo-

metres from the Coffs Harbour Coast. With a background in Bovine Genetics, our Stud Principal has selec-tively used Top Of The Leaderboard proven sires, sourced from around the world, via embryo transfers and artificial breeding. Females are individually selectively mated to individual sires to further advance the desir-able traits of the resultant progeny. Temperament ranks as an automatic culling indicator at Brooklana. The cattle are quiet, very quiet; bulls offered for sale in this catalogue are testimony to this policy.

Making hard decisions is never easy, selling off 60 of our stud cows in July 2014, being over half our cows, was no exception. We were however able to select which bulls we wished to offer at this year’s sale at weaning time, giving us an overall pool of 110 calvings in total to choose from. The objective was to make way for our new female genetics, so unfortunately the older girls had to go, to make room for the new genetics coming through. Selecting only less than half the bull calves that we had available to choose from, has resulted in an outstanding collection of bulls on offer this year.

Girls are the WinnersIf you are buying bulls you have cows and yet all too often, the bull buying focus is on how good a steer,

the bull could produce. Bulls come and bulls go, but generally a cow herd is not changed as often, so really your cow herd has at least the same influence on your outcomes, if not more so than the male/steer compo-nent.

Behind the most successful studs there is without exception, an outstanding cow herd. These girls shape our future and are a reflection of the breeding philosophy of the stud owners. Within most breeds there is a promotion of fashion. Stud bull sellers strive to get the jump on the competition and make the right decision, mostly 2.9 years before their bull sale. EBVs are a great guide as to what you can expect from the genetics you are after. In recent years the Angus breed have been at the forefront in creating low birth weight, easy calving sires, whose progeny also excel in the growth stakes. This phenomenon is due to identifying sires with a short gestation length. Expecting calves to be small whilst growing in Mum and then taking off once born is not possible.

Brooklana Angus is in its 6th year of operation. Our quest to assemble an outstanding cow herd is well on the way to fruition. Our J heifers, being the female equivalent of last year’s sale bulls, are calving now. They are well on the way to being the type of animal we are striving for: Wedge shaped, deep bodied, heaps of capacity, great udders, sound legs and feet and, really quiet at the point of calving. Our sale this year has been genetically designed so that the sires on offer will compliment the progeny from the sires that we offered and sold last year.

Our approach to health on the farmHaving just sown our first crop of barley without any chemically based fertilizer inputs is a great feeling,

yet also a little scary. Our vision for the farm is to continue working in harmony with nature, endorsing bio-logically sustainable practices, without resorting to the use of chemicals, wherever possible.

We are witnessing the improvement in the health of our cattle, which is as a direct result of the improved health of our soils and therefore our pastures and crops, due to a more holistic approach to our management practices.

We accept that we are what we eat, as are our cattle. Growing a vegie garden involves practices that are often very different to how we grow the fodder for our animals. If we can grow our fodder here at Brooklana for our cattle using the vegie garden philosophy, they should be healthier, happier, grow faster and, heaven forbid, taste better.

We hope you like what we are offering. Our cattle are our mates. We love what we do - hope you do too.

Matauri Reality 839: 5 Sons AvailableThe ultimate outcross, currently ranked 4th as the most popular of all sires available throughout the Angus

Australia Society register. Considering the number of sires available in Australia, from all around the world and the short time that his semen has been available in Australia, this is quite extraordinary.

Described as the best sire bred in over 50 years by Matauri. The ABS tour of New Zealand by Angus breed-ers in 2014, ranked Reality as the sire of the Tour.

We were quick to use him, as we know where the stud is and how the cattle have to work – grassfed like here, very important in our mind. We have more Reality bulls in our sale than any other AI sire.

K57 is already nominated for the 2016 Angus Society Cohorts, progeny test programme and we could have nominated more. A trait leader for calving ease, gestation length and scrotal size, is proof enough, but these guys are super docile and a joy to work with. Look for Reality sons to top the sales around Australia this year. Matauri Reality sons are selling as Lots 7, 9, 11, 21 and 30 in this Catalogue.

$55,000. He has iconic Te Mania breeding, on both sides of his pedigree. High in fats and IMF, a really strong EBV spread of figures. K29 is out of Brooklana Niobe G56, by Gatsby. He has the 3rd highest average daily gain, growth rate. G56 was a winner on the show circuit. Gatsby sons are selling as lots 6 and 10 in this Cata-logue.

Medlyn Chile C25: 8 Sons AvailableThe first and only sire we have purchased, nicknamed Otis. Chile C25 has produced progeny which have

excelled in the show ring and as sale topping commercial progeny at the saleyards. Now one of his sons, Brooklana Star G57, has produced a Supreme Champion heifer, defeating a $16,000 cow with calf at foot.

Otis has an outstanding pedigree. His progeny have kept pace with progeny from the best sires worldwide that we have used. Chile C25 was sold several years ago and we retained semen, which we will continue to use Otis within our stud. Chile’s sons are selling as Lots 1, 3, 5, 8, 24, 26, 27 and 29 in this Catalogue.

progeny, they command attention. His dam, Medlyn Star C26, has pro-duced outstanding progeny. They have a strong presence in our stud. Two out of the three animals we took to the Ekka were progeny from G57. A daughter of his was the 2016 Bellingen Show All Breed Supreme female. Brooklana Galaxy L4 is by G57 out of Brooklana Regal H5. Galaxy L4 also won recently at the 2016 Brisbane Ekka. Star’s sons are selling as Lot 4 and 34 in this Catalogue.

    Reference Dams

    Brooklana Regal H5

The Regal Family: 3 Sons availableThe value of genetic selection is never more apparent, than when time after time the same members of the

same cow family continue to be at the top of the Leaderboard.Medlyn Regal R34 is the grand dam of our leading sire prospect K57 and also of Brooklana Regal H5,

dam of L4. Medlyn Regal R34 has 11 naturally bred recorded progeny. Brooklana Regal H5 calved L4 at less than 2 years of age and went back in calf 19 days after calving, producing 2 calves in 2015. Totally placid, the Regals are performance par excellence. Regal family sons are selling as Lots 7, 32 and 34 in this Catalogue.

The Champagne Family: 4 Sons availableA real matron of the breed, Merribrook Champagne R49, could be considered the foundation cow of the

Champagne family. We adore the femininity carried through with this family. Our Champagnes have been complimented by the likes of Hingaia 469, sire of Millah Murrah Kingdom, sold for a record of $150,000, Ardrossan Equator A241, Te Mania Emperor and Farfield TM Modest. Modest has the legendary Te Mania Kelp plus a host of Merrigrange genes in his pedigree. Our first calf Modest heifers, calving now are a joy to behold. Champagne family sons are selling as Lot 3, 5, 23, and 29 in this Catalogue. Brooklana Champagne H52

Flushed to Burthlene Patriot 47M earlier this year, a daughter of Te Mania Emperor E343. We love the balance of structure, frame and genetic input. We purchased her dam, at the Vermont dispersal in 2010 as an implanted embryo and then she was subsequently flushed to Emperor at 13 months. Her maternal grandsire is the legendary Atahua Legacy 26-90, still the record priced bull sold in Australasia. Her dam is an A241 daughter. Brooklana H52 is the dam of Lot 3 in this catalogue.Brooklana Champagne J12

Blending the Champagne/Hingaia 469/TM Modest genetics with Ayrvale Bartel E7, Brooklana Cham-pagne J12 had a heifer for her first calf. She has great maternal qualities with an outstanding udder. J12’s calf is by Brooklana Dream H29, a combination of the Dream female family by BT Right Time 24J.

IMPORTANT: Based on our research, by adopting the following policy, your new bull will be given the best opportunity to provide the optimum results within your cow herd.

Our 2 year bull guarantee is subject to the following bull management plan:

    1. For young bulls, the ratio of bulls to cows is based on the number of months that equals the bulls age, being the same as the number of cows; for example bull age = 24 months, cows per bull = 24. A mature bull, being plus 3 years of age can adequately manage the mating requirements of 40 – 50 cows. Younger bulls may mate individual cows many times whilst the cows are in standing heat. Mature bulls invariably only mate cows in standing heat once or twice.

    2. Do not mix young bulls with older bulls. This is the major cause of injury of bulls and can render either, or both bulls, unfit to mate cows. In a cow herd where young bulls and older bulls are mixed, the dominance of the older sire can result in the confidence of the young sire being damaged which adversely affects his mat-ing performance.

    3. If engaged in heat synchronisation of your cow herd, the cycling of the cows who do not conceive to A.I., can occur within a shorter period than the normal 19 – 24 day period. Rotating bulls after a maximum of 2 weeks reduces the stress on the bull(s) who initially follow up after the A.I. programme.

    4. It is essential that the individual bull’s health programme be continued, following relocation to his new home. This includes:

    a. maintain inoculation programme

    b. maintain bulls nutritional requirements

    c. carry out preventative treatments for both internal and external parasites.

    5. As young bulls invariably grow up with others in a herd environment, it is essential that they are not isolated away from other cattle. It is advised that the young arrival be placed in some form of female herd environment.

Supreme Champion Angus Exhibit, 2016 Bellingen ShowComments: Benny, as he is affectionately known, was turned out into a paddock, after the Bellingen Show in May and has not received any special treatment since. He is sold stripped down, ready for work. He is the second winning show bull from the same cow, a daughter of Ben Nevis Abel. His sire, Medlyn Chile C25, is the only sire ever purchased by Brooklana, (now sold) but still used via A.I.. Chile will never have impressive EBV’s due to his progeny being in a single herd, he is however beautifully bred with Papa Equator and Vermillion Dateline on either side of his pedigree. Outstanding phenotype, disposition and great balance, Benny was a stand out in the paddock at weaning - clever buying here.

Another Chile son, this animal was created by design rather than by a broad brush method. This is one gorgeous bull. I just love driv-ing into the paddock and looking at him.

Comments: Follow up sire for our stud heifers in 2015. We had a lot of bulls to choose from, but this was the guy to complement what we saw with our heifers. Interesting that he is a son of Chile. Maybe we were on the right track, as his sister out of the same sire, is the 2016 Supreme Champion All Breeds female at the 2016 Bellingen Show. We like his phenotype and overall balance.

Still the record priced Angus animal at $155,000 in the 1990s. Merribrook Champagne R49 is in the dam’s pedigree not too far back. His sire is represented several times throughout this catalogue. Sire: Matauri Reality 839 Dam: Medlyn Helen F61

Comments: Reality star here again, dam is by the same Sitz Upward 307R as is K57. He has the same docile temperament. K50 is one of the highest calving ease prospects we have bred, yet has 19 out of 23 recorded traits above the Angus breed average. A set and forget sire for your heifers with strong growth, he is the true definition of the term “curve bender”. K50 enjoys a scratch in the paddock, will come up and give you a nudge (gently) if you ignore him. Another herd builder Reality son out of an impeccably bred cow.

Comments: By a son of Farfield TM Modest, who was out of our Vermont Champage cow. This is another example of Hall of Famer Hingaia 469’s influence over subsequent generations. He is thick, smooth and soft with a great constitution. If you are selling commercial weaners then this sire will produce stand out progeny. The dam is a member of our Star family with Bando 9074 in her pedigree. Lot 34 is also a member of the same maternal family with a different paternal mix. Renowned judge Troy Setter judged his paternal sister All Breeds Supreme Female at the 2014 Bellingen Show.

Sire: Mohnen Dynamite 1356 Dam: Pipinpingah Champagne F21

Comments: His dam, Pipinpingah Champagne F21, is out of Vermont Champagne D72 who has Hingaia 469 in her DNA. Her sire Farfield TM Modest represents the very best of Te Mania bloodlines. We have a lot of Champagne and Modest in our young cow herd. Our Modest heifers have desirable phenotype and great udders. They are very quiet and make great mothers. A combination here of grunt from Dynamite and maternal traits from the dam’s side makes a really nice balance.

Comments: Mohnen Dynamite is one of the breed’s most popular sires. His sons have averaged as high as $11,000 at a well-known studs’ annual sale. The dam of K54 was one of only 3 cows, repurchased by us after we had sold her. She is a Sitz Upward 307R daughter. He has a good calving ease prospect with strong growth and Carcase weight EBVs. K54 was picked on by a few in the group limiting his performance. He deserves a close look.

Comments: Combining a Reality son with a Sitz Upward 307R daughter, K52 has strong growth EBVs and one of our highest milk figures at +22 against a breed average for all 2014 born and recorded animals of +14. He ranks at 1 for EBV calving ease for all Resolution progeny throughout Australia. His scanned scrotal size of 46cm prompted a question from Breedplan. His EBV is double the average. Sire: Brooklana Star G57 Dam: Brooklana Regal H5

Comments: This bull has been shown, recently returning from the Brisbane Royal.Receiving a blue ribbon in his class, he progressed to the Junior Championship judg-

ing, Judge David Bassingsthwaite made a special mention over the microphone about this bull. He said “I want to say something about the bull in 4th position. I really like this bull, if he was better prepared, in better condition, he would have been at the top of the group”. These comments confirmed our assessment of the bull and reinforced our deci-sion not to feed him to the extent that his health and long-term structural integrity would be compromised.

He was put in a paddock following the Bellingen Show without any additional feeding and still clocked up 2kgs per day growth rate. We designed this breeding to create an animal for high growth. The fact that he is a son of a bull that we bred out of a bull that we owned was always going to result in his actual data being very different to his EBVs. His dam is Brooklana Regal H5, winner of the 2013 12 – 14 month class at the Brisbane Royal. This is her first calf. She then went back in calf 19 days after calving L4, having 2 calves naturally in 2014. Temperament is a given with L4, he is a darling. His sire, G57, is the sire of 2 out of 3 of our Brisbane Royal Show team. His daughter, Brooklana Pebbles L36, was the 2016 Supreme Female All Breeds at the Bellingen Show, ahead of some fancied competition as judged by renowned Royal judge, Colin Rex. She is fine boned, and totally femimine.

L4 is a real game changer with our very latest growth genetics on offer here. He is from the same cow family as Lot 7, Brooklana M Reality K57.
