rewards, promoting Fairtrade
principles and co-operative
businesses - where members
have more of a say. Our learn-
ers were extremely engaged
and I’ve had lots of comments
about ‘Divine’ and ‘Dubble’
bars since! It’s been fascinating
having conversations with the
young people in our school
about hunger, consumer power
and the differences between
rich and poor nations - it’s
certainly helped our learners to
appreciate the challenges that
global communities face
beyond what we know in Brom-
ley Heath and the United King-
dom. This week, we enjoyed a
super assembly planned and
delivered by a small group of
volunteers from Year 3. Well
done girls - leaders of the
future showing initiative
already.
We’re over half way through
the school year, which is just
astonishing!
Everybody enjoys our ‘Life
Learning’ curriculum lessons
and assemblies. Teachers very
much enjoy seeing learners
grow in a different way too,
through deeper thinking,
reflection, discussion and
debate. We’re really proud of
the way we’ve developed our
Personal, Social and Health
Education (PHSE) with relevant
learning about communities and
lives across our world, this has
proved extremely popular and
really developed our moral and
cultural thinking at all levels right
across our school. This term,
we’re going global at BHJS! Our
theme ‘Who likes chocolate?’
really gives learners a chance to
reflect on and appreciate the
differences between people;
exploring the themes of
globalisation and Fairtrade. Our
launch assembly was, of
course, all about the production
of chocolate! We took the
opportunity to explore rights and

Bromley Bulletin
Everybody continues to be so
committed and involved in their
learning and I reported how
proud we all were of our
learners to our Governing Body
this week. Progress both
academically and personally
continues to look strong across
the school and we intend to
keep it that way, we were
thrilled that Bromley Heath
Junior School was published in
The Times newspaper as 7th in
the list of top ten schools in
South Gloucestershire last
year. Thanks to all our families
for your ongoing partnership
and support - we appreciate it
and we couldn't be as
successful without you!
Kind regards

Literacy week (w/b 31st March) will soon be upon us and we have lots of experiences planned for the children which we hope will be both stimulating and inspiring. They will also have the opportunity to step inside the world of literature on Thursday 3rd April when they are invited to step into a character’s shoes and dress as their favourite book or film personality!
We will be kicking off the week with a Drama and Poetry Enrichment morning. The children very much look forward to these mornings as it is a great opportunity for them to try something new whilst working with children in different classes, alongside parents and members of the local community.
Cavan Scott, well known author and journalist, will be back by popular demand! On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, he will be working with all year groups, creating exciting science-fiction style stories. Our key theme of Time Travel and Science Fiction will be running throughout our learning during the week. We are also lucky to be able to welcome Mrs Angie Athay-Hunt back into school, working with all year groups to run drama workshops on the Thursday and Friday.
In addition to this, Year 3 will be visiting Downend library during the afternoon of Wednesday 2nd April. Librarian Helen Egarr will be reminding the children about how to use the Dewey system, as well as showing them everything their local library has to offer!
In classrooms, there will be lots of fun activities based around reading, writing and drama, as we all enjoy our love of books and literature together.
Finally, the Travelling Book Fair will be in residence throughout the week so please take the opportunity to pop and in and choose some books from their exciting selection which you can enjoy reading with your children.

The MaD Legacy
We are entering the second year of Mangotsfield and Downend
(MaD) cluster school events, planned and sustained after our
fantastic year of celebrating the Olympic games in 2012. Again,
we are looking forward to a host of activities at cluster schools
providing opportunities for learners in culture, creativity and
sport. Our dance group have been busy preparing a performance
for ‘Dancing through the Decades’ at Barley Close Primary at the
end of this month - good luck to them! Upcoming events
so far include a Choir Competition at Stanbridge and a Chess
tournament at Emersons Green - other events are appearing
weekly! BHJS is hosting a ‘Gabbler’ competition, hearing learn-
ers’ ideas on a range of issues - good luck to our team Oliver
Woodland, Alice Hassard and Ellie Lester, looking forward to hear-
ing your gabble! Thanks to Governor Sharon Clements for join-
ing the judging panel….look out for the results!
2014 Get well soon......Our thoughts are very much with two of our
support staff members who have been unwell for some time now -
Mrs Lynne Gapper and Mrs Anne Macey. It is probable that they will
not be returning to school until after Easter - our team doesn't feel
complete without them and I know how much the children are
missing them too! Special thanks to our terrific Teaching Assistant
Team who have all found time to take on extra responsibilities in
their absence - keeping things as normal as possible for our children.

Interactivity at Bromley Heath Juniors
Thank you to all of the parents who joined us for the most recent Parent Leadership Meeting, where we discussed and enjoyed
listening to all of your views on interactive teaching and learning. An interesting and informative time once again.
At BHJS, we very much want to prepare every child in skills that will last them a lifetime, for secondary school and beyond. In
order to do so, we have been thinking about the bigger questions in life that can lead children’s thinking, including further
opportunities for reflection, empathy and compassion in class, as well as focusing on children’s investigative skills. Please take
the time to look at our proposed rationale on the school website – I’d really like to hear your opinion!
As part of interactive learning strategies and in readiness for the brand new National Curriculum this September, we have begun
to make good use of our new Interactive Learning Centre (ILC) this term. This area consists of a variety of non-fiction texts,
topical and practical resources, different spaces to support a variety of learning approaches, displays to encourage positive learn-
ing strategies and not forgetting the two new iPads, which seem to have gone down exceptionally well with our learners. Our aim
is to make learners independent in their thinking and research - active participants in their learning journey.
As well as supporting our learners during lessons, we hope to encourage its use during the lunch hour and to support children
and parents before and after school – please do pop in and take a look, particularly at our area designated for supportive
parents! Here you’ll find a range of texts and resources that are interesting and possibly useful. This continues to be a work in
progress so, once again, we value your opinion.
I look forward to hearing and seeing you soon!
