creatinG a corporate presence on campUs the key to successful recruiting is building
and maintaining a presence on campus.
progressive and consistent on campus
marketing to students and faculty is the key
to long term hiring success. the following
activities provide proven strategies for your
organization to connect and cultivate a
positive image with brock co-op students.
networking breakfast and ca night
participate in targeted faculty of business
events including the networking breakfast
and ca night. held during the fall
semester, the networking breakfast
provides an opportunity to increase your
company profile and meet with bright and
talented undergraduate and graduate
business students. ca night is an excellent
way to introduce your firm and target
brock’s accounting students.
corporate information sessions
through an information session you can
inform students of your organization’s
strengths and vision for the future, explain
available opportunities and network
informally over refreshments.
co-op presentations and Workshops
take advantage of a unique way to increase
your on campus presence. employers
can participate in brock’s employment
preparation workshops or conduct an in-
class presentation; providing students with
expertise on a specific subject area while
showcasing their organization.
connect With faculty
some of the most influential advocates on
campus are faculty. employers can provide
case studies from their organization for
courses and faculty can assist companies
with conducting research or special projects.
mock interviews
each semester, the co-op programs
office hosts a mock interview event for
students. employers are able to volunteer
their time to assist students in developing
and improving their interviewing skills.
participation in this event is a wonderful
way to make connections and increase your
organization’s brand awareness among
brock’s co-op population.
career expo and career fair
consider attending brock’s annual
career expo and career fair, which
attracts hundreds of students from a
variety of academic backgrounds. both
of these events are an excellent way to
promote your organization, employment
opportunities and begin pre-screening
candidates for available positions.
Golf tournament
the co-op programs office at brock
annually hosts a golf tournament for
students, faculty and ca firms. this
tournament provides an excellent
opportunity for firms to showcase their
organization and to network with brock
accounting students.
scholarships and bursaries
brock university co-op students are
eligible to apply for the brock university
co-op bursary among other prestigious
scholarships. your support not only
provides direct assistance to our co-op
students, but increases on campus
awareness of your organization, and
helps us attract high quality students
while providing the best possible
learning environment.

Why select a program with a co-op option?
enrich your academic studies by applying the •
concepts you have learned in class to your work
experience.
sample a variety of work placements and develop •
greater awareness of your interests, talents and future
career path.
Gain up to 20 months work experience by the time •
you graduate and acquire an invaluable network which
will dramatically increase your chances of obtaining
employment upon graduation.
earn an income to finance your education and reduce •
dependency on student loans.
co-op students are typically more successful in •
securing full time permanent employment.
approximately 60% of all new graduate jobs are filled
by students with co-op work experience (cafce).
the brock co-op advantage
nearly 100% placement rates for students across all •
programs — one of the highest and most consistent
placement rates in the country.
some of the most exciting and rewarding opportunities •
with canada’s top employers. we use our experience
and resources to diligently screen all postings to
ensure our students secure relevant and valuable work
terms.
third largest co-op school in the province and fifth •
largest co-op school in canada with one of the most
diverse choices of co-op program areas (27 programs
available in total).
unlike other institutions, employers recruiting at brock •
university can extend offers at anytime; students are
not required to wait for ranking deadlines to find out
they have a job and employers continue to recruit from
brock to avoid the ranking and matching process used
at other schools.
brock’s accounting co-op is the second largest •
program of its kind in canada and the second program
to be fully accredited by the institute of chartered
accountants of ontario (icao).
7
information for stUdents
most universities require students to apply for co-op •
during their first year, where brock guarantees direct
entry from secondary school (providing admission
criteria is meet). this allows the student to concentrate
on adjusting to university life and not the co-op
application process.
pre-employment training typically includes resume •
writing, cover letter composition and interviewing
skills. in addition to the standard topics offered at other
schools, brock co-op students participate in degree
specific workshops delivered by knowledgeable
industry professionals who have a vested interest
in employing brock students. we pride ourselves on
having the most interactive and valuable workshop
series available.
brock co-op students must complete two years of •
rigorous academic study prior to their first work term.
as a result, employers have commented that brock
co-op students are more professional, and better
prepared to handle job requirements than the majority
of their competitors.
Brock University co-op st. catharines, on / phone 905.688.5550 ext. 4325 / fax 905.688.0631 / [email protected] / www.brocku.ca/co-op
admission
brock’s co-op program admits students directly from •
high school. students applying to the co-op stream
generally require a minimum 80% 12u average.
meeting the minimum requirements does not
guarantee admission as the selection process is
extremely competitive (the average entering grade is
85%).
when applying to the co-op program, the “co-op” •
box must be selected on the ouac application form.
transfer students and students applying at the end of •
their first year of university will require evaluation of
their transcripts to determine eligibility.
international students are eligible to apply to all co-op •
programs with the exception of accounting, and
public administration.
career readiness
the co-op programs office ensures that students are
prepared for their transition from academia to the world
of work. all co-op students attend pre-employment
workshops designed to provide the tools and skills
needed to compete and succeed in the 21st century.
weekly guest speakers are invited to address topics
tailored to each program area, helping to ensure students
are ready to make an immediate contribution once the
work term begins.
employment locations
most brock co-op students secure positions in toronto,
niagara region, waterloo, london, ottawa and other
ontario cities, however students should be willing to work
anywhere in canada.
Job search process
virtually all work terms are found through the brock •
co-op job posting board which has been specifically
designed to meet the needs of our students.
the job search process generally begins four months •
prior to the start of a designated work term.
students apply to jobs that match skills and interests. •
employers select candidates for interviews and present
offers. students make the final decision with
acceptance of an offer of employment.
continuation of study
as one of the most successful and reputable co-op
programs in canada, we need to continue to provide our
employers with the highest quality and most professional
students available. once admitted to a co-op program at
brock university, it is expected that students will maintain
an honours standing throughout their university career.
to graduate with a co-op degree, students must
successfully complete a minimum of three work terms,
the pre-employment training workshops, as well as
maintain an honours standing in their respective program.
co-op fees
co-op students are assessed an administrative fee in
addition to regular academic tuition. the total co-op fee
is $2100.00 payable in three installments:
co-op administration fee of $700.00 (assessed in fall •
of year 1 at brock)
pre-employment workshop fee of $700.00 (assessed •
when registering for admin 0n90)
$700.00 (assessed when registering for first work term)•
* fourth and fifth work terms will incur an additional fee
of $700.00 each.
* fees for graduate level co-op programs may differ
relocation costs, if applicable, are the responsibility of
the student.
co-op salaries
co-op work terms are generally paid employment.•
weekly salaries vary greatly amongst employers, •
positions, geographic location and work term level.
weekly salaries for summer 2006 ranged between
$271.25 and $978.25.

brock offers one of the strongest traditional earth
sciences/Geology degree programs in ontario.
students can pursue degrees / majors in either
earth science or environmental Geoscience.
degree programs examine the interrelationships
between earth materials, the atmosphere,
hydrosphere, and biosphere and the impact of
human activities upon them from a physical science
viewpoint. a key element of these programs is
their emphasis on training in both laboratory and
field techniques; both are essential for graduates
to compete for government and private sector
positions in the environmental disciplines.
“as a student Geologist i have had many learning
opportunities at st. andrew Goldfields in areas such
as logging and splitting core, creating face maps,
making geological maps, geological interpretations,
interpreting cross sections of diamond drilling,
as well as muck and face sampling. i have been
given the opportunity to work with the data mine
and dh logger computer systems, both of which
are extraordinarily important research tools in the
geosciences field. i would not have found this
job without the help of the co-op office and my
experience here has been extremely rewarding.”
