THE DRIVING FORCE BEH

56industrial switchgear

&66 SERIESDesigned to satisfy customer needs,

precisely engineered and carefully

manufactured, Clipsal Industrial Switchgear is

as versatile as your requirements.

Industrial switchgear, being one of the most im-

portant components of industry, has to be tough,

safe, able to take hard knocks and give reliable

performance under many adverse conditions.

The Clipsal 56 and 66 Series satisfies these

challenges with the use of durable engineering

plastics.

The 56 Series has been tested for protection

against ingress of water and dust to International

Protection Rating IP56, and in many instances

exceeds this level of protection.

It is testimony to the excellence in both manu-

facture and performance of 56 and 66 Series

Industrial Switchgear.

HIND TODAY’S INDUSTRY

industrial switchgear

SERIES56 56 Series Colour Range

For over a decade the Clipsal 56

Series has enjoyed a reputation for

excellent performance in harsh industrial

environments.

All products in the 56 Series are

available in light grey UV stabilised rigid

polycarbonate. The light grey series has

excellent strength compared to other

compatible plastic products.

There is, however, no economical

plastic material available that provides

maximum impact strength as well as a

high degree of chemical resistance.

Clipsal has chosen not to compro-

mise on either count and instead offers

two high performance chemical resistant

ranges for environmentally aggressive

locations.

The UV and chemical resistant

orange and white version is suitable for

indoor and outdoor applications, such as

chemical plants, timber and paper

processing plants and laboratories.

The new chemical resistant grey

range of sockets, switched socket

outlets and covers has been specifically

designed for indoor food environments

where aggressive alkalis cleaners are

Dust-resistant,Hoseproof and UV Resistant

Because its tough enclosure casing

is dust-resistant, hoseproof and UV

resistant, the 56 Series is suitable for

heavy industrial environments.

The aesthetic appearance of the 56

Series makes it the ideal choice

for installation in commercial facilities

such as television studios, shopping

centres and warehouses. What’s more,

56 Series products are just as accept-

able alongside a public or domestic

swimming pool.

Safety in Operation

For safety’s sake all of

the switches in the range

have been equipped with

facilities for double pad-

locking. When plugs are

removed, the socket flap

automatically locks into

place, preventing dust or

water from entering.

used, such as dairies, abattoirs and

food processing plants.

For further technical details refer pg 10.

PVC Solvent BondingCompatibility

All Clipsal 56 Series Enclosures are

manufactured from robust UV stabilised

PVC and can be solvent bonded to

standard electrical PVC conduit

accessories.

Transparent Plastic Materials

The introduction of transparent

materials to the 56 Series enables the

inspection and checking of the compo-

nents pin/socket configuration and

wiring at a glance, while still providing

protection against the elements.

Designed to Mix and Match

What suits one industry might not be

the perfect match for another. That’s why

the 56 Series was specifically designed

to mix and match. There is an extensive

choice of modules available, including

switches, sockets, photo electrical cells

and residual current devices.

Clipsal mounting enclosures range

in size from 1 to 16 gang. This allows

assemblies to be customised - from a

simple switch station to a large electrical

control panel.

Accessories can be ordered Less

Enclosure (back box) by simply

specifying LE after the Catalogue

Number.

Clipsal design, engineering andprecision brings you the revolutionary66 Series of Combination SwitchedSocket Outlets and Plugs for 50 and 63amp., 4, 5 or 7 pin heavy-duty appli-ances, such as welders, pumps, andmobile conveyors.

Until recently 50 and 63 amp. socketoutlets and plugs were constructed withmetal clad housings, which, in manysituations, encounter drawbacks withtheir heavyweight, time consuminginstallation and susceptibility to corro-sion.

66 Series Switched Socket Outletsand Plugs solve these problems andoffer many other benefits.

Major features of the 66CV SwitchedSocket Outlets are their robust PVCback box and polyester cover thatprovide excellent chemical and highimpact resistance as well as UV stability,in a neat, compact unit that’s quickerand easier to install. 66P Plugs aremanufactured from fully moulded, transparent polycarbonate or resistantorange polyester to offer the samedegree of strength and resistance tochemicals and UV rays.

For convenience and safety, boththe switched socket outlets and plugscan be easily used with gloved hands.

An internal interlock is fitted to theoutlet to prevent insertion or withdrawalof the plug (provided the plug is fittedwith an interlock facility) while the switchis in the ‘on’ position.

66CV Series Combination SwitchedSocket Outlets also incorporate apadlock facility in the ‘off’ position foradded safety and security.

CHEMICAL RESISTANCEIt is well documented that Clipsal's

standard grey products are ideal formost applications. For those environ-ments where harsh chemicals are usedthat require special chemical resistantproperties, Clipsal offers as an option oftwo product ranges:1) Chemical Resistant Orange (RO)/ Chemical Resistant White (RW) and2) Chemical Resistant Grey (CG)

TEMPERATURE RESISTANCEThe temperature range of the 56

Series products are limited by twoaspects;1) the material used in mouldings and2) the operating temperature of theelectrical components.

The material type limits the use ofthe standard product to -25oC to +75oC.

For temperatures outside of theselimits, and for information on the heatgenerated by the electrical compo-nents, please contact your Clipsal rep.

These two ranges have beendeveloped by leading plastic materialmanufacturers and offer greaterresistance to chemical attack thancommon plastic materials with minimalreduction in impact strength.

To make selection of the correctproduct easy, we provide the followinginformation and table as a guide.

Chemical Resistant Orange (RO)/Chemical Resistant White (RW) offersresistance to a wide range of chemicaltypes. It is ideal for corrosive and

industrial chemicals, animal fats, oils, solvents and lubricants.

This material has excellent UVresistance for use outside.

Chemical Resistant Grey (CG) isideal in food processing and medicalareas exposed to strong cleaning Alkalis(Sodium Hydroxide or Caustic Soda)are used. It should be noted that thematerial used in this product is notrecommended for outside use due tolow UV resistance.

Sunset switches automaticallyswitch lights on when the ambient lightlevel falls below a predetermined level.

The 56SSR is surface mounting butcan be adapted to flush mounting byusing 56FA Surrounds and Brackets.

The 56SSR allows control of a 10Aload current in a two wire configuration, therefore, eliminating the need forseparate neutral at the switch. The56SSR also incorporates a fullyconfigurable timer with a remote-disableoption.

When correctly connected to asuitable supply and load, the 56SSR willturn the load on when the ambient lightlevel is below approximately 10 lux.Similarly, the load will be turned off whenthe light level exceeds approximately 30lux. Delays of approximately 8 secondson turn-off and 30 seconds on turn-on

56SSR

are incorporated into the circuit to rejectthe effects of short term changes in thelight levels, which may otherwise turnthe load on or off.

The 56SSR is also equipped with atimer circuit which, if enabled, will turnthe light off after a preset time delay. Thetime delay can be from 15 minutes to 15hours - 45 minutes set in 15 minuteincrements.

The timer can be disabled byapplying neutral potential to the terminalT1 in which case the status of the loadis controlled only by the ambient lightlevel. This feature provides a remotetimer override function if required.

Since the 56SSR Sunset Switch is atwo wire product which does not requireany power while the load is turned on,there is one specific aspect of itsoperation well worth noting. When poweris applied to the sunset switch for thefirst time, it will require up to 3.5 minutesto warm up. This behaviour is caused bythe time delay required to charge anenergy storage element within the unit.

Combination SwitchedSockets with RCDProtection

Despite Australia having one of thesafest electrical systems in the world, accidents can still occur.

A faulty or poorly maintainedappliance, a frayed cord, wet hands orcarelessness with power tools are allsituations that can lead to tragedy.

To help avoid electrocution inindustrial environments, Clipsal has arange of combination switched socketswith inbuilt RCD protection. The RCDworks by constantly monitoring andcomparing the current flow in both theActive and Neutral circuits of anelectrical installation.

Toroid Mechanism

SPECIAL COMBINATIONS ANDMODULES

During normal operation, theseActive and Neutral currents are inbalance.

However, should any current flow toearth, an imbalance is created in thesecircuits.

If this imbalance is sufficient (30mA),the RCD will cut the electrical supply inless than 40 milliseconds, perhaps themost important fraction of a second insomeone’s life.

Apart from the protection fromelectrocution that an RCD offers, it willalso cut off power to expensive electri-cal equipment in the event of anelectrical fault to earth. This protectsappliances against costly damage andthe installation against fire resulting fromfaults of this nature.

Clipsal Combination SwitchedSockets with RCD protection enablequick disconnection of power in thecase of an emergency and providemotor rated isolation. A neon is standardon all models to indicate that the RCD isprotecting the outlet. If the neon is not

illuminated, the RCD has tripped and nopower is available from the socket.

The internal phase connectionsbetween switches and sockets arefactory wired.

The 56RC provides stand aloneprotection or multiple protection ofsocket outlets in a modular IP56 Seriesenclosure.Warning: The RCD used in Clipsal 56Series modules only protects againstshocks from current passing throughthe body to earth, the cause of themajority of electrocutions. Completeprotection under all circumstances is notpossible from this or any other device.

The following technicalterms are brief descriptionsindicating the tests involved toattain ratings. For furtherinformation refer to the stan-dards indicated.

M-Rating (Refer AS 3133)Clipsal switches and switched

socket outlets are marked with anM-Rating. This indicates that theseproducts have been tested and foundsuitable for switching locked rotorcurrent.

In part, this test involves 50operations, make and break of thenominated locked rotor current at 0.5power factor lagging. The switch will notfail to interrupt the current or fail in anyway electrically or mechanically.

AC-21 (refer AS 3947)Switching of resistive loads,

including moderate overloadsIn part this involves 5 make and

break operations, at 11/2 times ratedcurrent and 1.1 times rated voltage at0.95 cos.

Additional mechanical no load andelectrical endurance tests at ratedcurrent and voltage at 0.95 cos areconducted.

AC-22 (refer AS 3947)Switching of mixed resistive and

inductive loads, including moderateoverloads.

In part this involves 5 make andbreak operations at 3 times ratedcurrent and 1.1 times rated voltage at0.65 cos.

Additional mechanical no load andelectrical endurance tests at ratedcurrent and voltage at 0.65 cos.
