Experience Tradition Anew

When the chants o the Dresden

Kreuzchor choir drit out o the

wide-open doors o the Kreuzkirche

church into the Altmarkt, and ll the

alleyways between the opulently de-

corated market stalls, Dresden and its

guests know: the Advent season has

arrived. Every year or more than hal

a millennium, the citys central square

is transormed into a Christmas won-

derland: the Dresden Striezelmarkt.

As Germanys oldest Christmas

market, it has maintained its tra-

ditions to this day. Merchants oer

wooden art rom the Ore Mountains,

gingerbread rom the gingerbread

town o Pulsnitz or Herrnhuter pa-

per stars. There is always the scent

o hot mulled wine in the air over the

many small places, where the origi-

nal Dresden Christstollen tastes best

in the romantic air. Towards evening,

the worlds largest Erzgebirge Christ-

mas pyramid as well as the Christmas

arch, which you can walk on, extend

above o the sea o lights.

The childrens adventure world is the

main daytime attraction. Here, the

prune chimney sweeps cottage and

the bakery are open to the little ones

or kneading and arts and crats. Fur-

thermore, there is the puppet theatre,

merry-go-round and a childrens rail-

way. The daily stage programme pro-

vides Christmas cheer and the events

on the Advent weekends are a special

highlight.

A giant stollen is pulled in a proces-

sion through the Baroque old town

to the Striezelmarkt and is cut and

handed out by the royal court mas-

ter baker and the Dresden stollen

maiden.

Christmas Arch Festival

With a height o a good 14 metres,

the Erzgebirge Pyramid overlooks the

hubbub o the Dresden Striezelmarkt,

and the motives on the six steps

come alive or the Pyramid esti-

val. Further highlights are a singing

contest and perormances by popular

musicians.

Christmas Markets

Christmas in Dresden is not only the

amous Striezelmarkt.

A whole Christmas mile extends

rom the Christmas market on Pra-

ger Strasse right across to the other

side o the Elbe to the Christmas

market on the Hauptstrasse and to

the Neustadt Advent, where a pre-

Christmas air invites visitors to stroll

along estively illuminated streets o

the baroque neighbourhood around

the Hauptstrasse, Knigstrasse and

the Wilhelminian quarter, Outer Neu-

stadt, where a diverse programme o

Christmas events is oered.

The Advent at the Neumarkt

takes you back to more than 100 years

ago and shows how things looked

here between 1830 and 1920. In this

same spirit, costumed cratspeople,

artists and merchants oer high-

quality traditional and hand-made

products at the historical Christmas

market. There is a lot to see: book

printer, wood carver, letterer, hatter,

bag-maker, goldsmith, chocolatier,

candy maker and much more.

Right next to the Neumarkt, you

can stroll over to the small and cosy

Christmas market by the Frauen-

kirche and be impressed by the sea-

sonal air o the Mnzgasse, which is

decorated with a multitude o lights

and the ultra big Herrnhuter Star.

For the rst time, a Christmas

market for gourmets greets its

guests in the romantic inner cour-

tyard o the Kurlnder Palace. Ten

market stands oer all sorts o treats.

You can still come here when most

o the traditional Christmas markets

have already closed.

There is a whole other atmosphere

at the Elbhangfest Christmas mar-

ket, which is nestled among pic-

turesque hal-timbered houses near

the Blue Wonder bridge. In lovingly

decorated stalls, merchants oer pro-

ducts ranging rom handicrats, pot-

tery, pewter, glass and wickerwork.

A visit to the Semper Opera House

is especially enchanting in the Christ-

mas season. During Advent, peror-

mances o Humperdincks Hansel

and Gretel or the ballet Sleeping

Beauty carry us o into a airy-taleworld where good triumphs over evil.

This years childrens and amily play

at the Staatsschauspiel Theatre

Dresden is the world premiere o the

antasy adventure Reckless by Cor-

nelia Funke. The story, set almost ex-

clusively in the 19th century, is about

the brothers Jacob and Will Reckless

and is inspired by the airy tales o

the Brothers Grimm. There will be ee-

rie gingerbread houses, a queen who

is served by dwarves, unicorns, ai-

ries, a speaking ox and much more.

The music or the stage version is

rom the Dresden band Polarkreis 18,

who also attract international attenti-

on with their chart success.

With E.T.A. Homanns antastic airy

tale Nutcracker and Mouse King,

the Theater Junge Generation will

The time-honoured Jgerho with

its cosy arches (recently made

wheelchair-accessible) is decorated

all over with individually designed

Christmas trees. Folk artists show

their cratsmanship, and children can

Only ve minutes away rom the

Striezelmarkt, the Deutsches Hygi-

ene Museum welcomes you to the

special exhibition What is BEAUTI-

FUL?. The exhibition oers multi-

aceted insights and suggestions to

refect about ones own relationship

to beauty.

This years Christmas exhibition

at the Burgk Manor in Freital traces

back the origins o probably the most

classic Christmas gures, the angel

and miner, in all their dierent acets.

In the 17th century, churches in the

Erzgebirge region already used miner

gurines as candleholders instead o

altar candleholders.

For many years now, locals young and

old consider Christmas in Dresden to

be incomplete without a visit to the

special exhibition Christmas in the

Landhaus.

This years exhibition ocuses on

the Advent calendar and Erzgebirge

Mountains olk art. 200 o the most

beautiul Advent calendars rom the

collection o the Berlin Museum o

European Cultures will be presented.

Erzgebirge olk art is known

throughout the world or its Christ-

mas lighted gures, pyramids, nut-

crackers, smoking men and toys. The

Dresden City Museum will be sho-

wing the most beautiul pieces rom

the collection o Klaus F. W. Tempel

rom Dresden. The oldest o which is

about 150 years old.

A special highlight during the

Advent and Christmas season at the

Transport Museum is the 0-gauge

model railway at 325 square metres,

it is one o the largest and most im-

portant model railways o its size in

Europe. A popular tradition in Dresden

to set the mood or Christmas is a visit

to the Museum of Saxon Folk Art.
