O Canada

Passengers experiencing Rocky Mountaineer for the fi rst time

will tell you it’s a bit like falling in love. You get goosebumps and at

that very moment, the entire world seems perfect.

With soul stirring coastlines, snaggletoothed mountains, and

epic wildlife, it’s no wonder why adjective-packed postcards have

become one of Canada’s greatest exports. Every province o ers

something unique, but British Columbia, and the Canadian Rockies

have emerged, in particular, as the holy grail of Canadian tourism.

Since 1990, the Rocky Mountaineer has carried guests high into

the heart of the Canadian Rockies, past the ethereally coloured

lakes and dense, lush landscapes to lively, cosmopolitan cities and

the quaint rural villages that dot the Canadian landscape.

Kodak speeds on the train allow shutterbugs to capture

memorable moments as storytellers regale you with historic facts

and funky urban legends. Sweet and savoury dishes, featuring

fresh, local ingredients are served to satisfy the palate. And every

night, you’ll be shuttled o to your hotel, so ready for the next leg

of your journey in the morning.

Rediscover yourself in the luxury and elegance, hallmark to the

most romantic method of transportation in the world. On a scale

of one to ten, open yourself to the possibility of a twelve.

What a difference a ride on the Rocky Mountaineer makes. As President and CEO of Rocky Mountaineer, people often ask me what makes our journeys so special. Is it the breathtaking scenery? The gourmet cuisine? The outstanding service? Although these things certainly contribute, there’s something more that’s hard to define. At the risk of sounding over the top, a trip on the Rocky Mountaineer can actually change your life.

I have known my father-in-law, Jim, for over 30 years. And I can honestly say that I have spent the better part of our relationship trying to earn his praise. Jim has been blessed with four beautiful daughters and, as such, has always been a tad over-protective. The hoops that prospective suitors had to jump through have become the stuff of family legend. Jim is an adoring father and doting grandfather, but as a father-in-law, he can be one tough customer.

Last October, I made yet another attempt to win his approval. I treated him to a train trip from Banff to visit my wife, Tina, and me in Vancouver. I was on pins and needles the whole time. Was he enjoying his first glimpse of the Canadian Rockies? Did he try the braised short ribs? Was he impressed with our award-winning Hosts?

The reports from the train were puzzling. Apparently, a man who looked like my father-in-law and answered to his name was a model guest! Not only was he charming and complimentary, he was laughing and chatting with the guests, sharing stories, savouring meals and exchanging addresses. Clearly, there was some mistake.

Although I have attended many Rocky Mountaineer arrivals and have greeted many VIPs and dignitaries, I don’t recall being as nervous as I was while watching Jim’s train roll in. One by one, our guests disembarked, but Jim was nowhere to be seen.

Page 7: Brochure Rocky Mountaineer 2013

At last, on the second level of one of our GoldLeaf domes, I saw a lively, silver-haired gentleman enthusiastically exchanging good-bye hugs with Rocky Mountaineer Hosts and fellow guests.

When Jim finally stepped off the train, he was all smiles. With his new friends in tow, he made a beeline toward me. I have never experienced a more intense, sincere hug in all my life. He then turned to his friends, puffed out his chest and proudly said, “This is my favourite son-in-law, Randy. He runs this train!” (Okay, he didn’t say “favourite”, but the rest is true.)

I have always believed there is something magical about travelling on the Rocky Mountaineer. Maybe it’s the amazing scenery coupled with the exquisite food.

Maybe it’s the engrossing stories and sensational service provided by our team of Hosts. Or maybe it’s sharing all of these experiences in the company of new friends. All I know for sure is that Rocky Mountaineer did change a life that day—mine.

It allowed me to see a side of my father-in-law that I had never seen before. Thanks to

that journey, Jim and I now share a special bond that I never thought possible.

I hope your experience on the Rocky Mountaineer is everything you dream of and more. You never know, it might just change your life—like it did for Jim and me.

Enjoy your journey,

Randy PowellPresident & CEO, Rocky Mountaineer

Behind every journey is our philosophy about what makes travel truly memorable. Rocky Mountaineer strives to exceed the expectations of every guest by showcasing the best when it comes to Scenery, Service, Sweet & Savoury, and Socialization. Then we blend all these elements into one unforgettable journey!

Pass through pristine wilderness—inaccessible by other means. Big game animals roam free on the Canadian landscape, from the bighorn sheep of the desert canyons, to the black bears shrouded in the misty coastal rainforests. Our trains run by daylight, so guests never miss a moment of the magic, whether it’s winding along sinuous canyons or climbing pine covered slopes.

Manners and friendliness come as naturally to Canadians as breathing. In addition, the Hosts onboard Rocky Mountaineer are world-class professionals who are skilled at serving up fascinating Canadiana while consistently exceeding the needs and expectations of guests.

Food and travel go together like trains and tunnels. Delight the palate with regionally inspired dishes created by our Executive Chefs trained in Michelin-star restaurants who use only the finest, freshest ingredients. Wrap your tongue around delicacies like black tiger prawns, melt-in-your-mouth beef short ribs, and fabulous salmon fillets. All meals onboard Rocky Mountaineer are included, so get ready for a mouthful.

Friendship happens. Swap stories, spot wildlife, and laugh, laugh, laugh. Travelling is a great way to meet fascinating people from around the world. Make sure your smart phone has plenty of room for new contact information. Or streamline by bringing along a stack of travel or business cards.

Kamloops, British columbiaSemi arid scrub and dusty hills welcome travellers to Kamloops—Canada’s only desert region. Banff GondolaAscend in only eight minutes to the summit of Sulphur Mountain in a modern, fully-enclosed four passenger gondola cabin. The views become increasingly spectacular as you climb to an elevation of 2,281 metres at the Summit Upper Terminal. You can sit in comfort to enjoy the view from the restaurant. Highly recommended is the easy 1 km self-guided interpretive walkway along the summit ridge; watch for the local wildlife, including Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, hoary marmots, Clark’s nutcracker and the Canada (Gray) jay.

Banff to calgary tour, with Highlights of Banff and a Summit Helicopter ride

This is a full-day tour. Begin the morning with a sightseeing tour of Banff. Visit the rushing wide waterfall at Bow Falls, and the area around Lake Minnewanka, rich in animal life. Then travel to Surprise Corner for a postcard-perfect view of The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. On this tour you will also view the Hoodoos, intriguing tower-like rock formations carved by wind and water, and take a trip on the Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain for a bird’s-eye view of six mountain ranges. Continue on to Kananaskis for a 12-minute Summit Helicopter ride, before arriving in Calgary.

icefield tour (between Jasper and lake louise)

Travel along one of the most scenic highways in the world, the Icefields Parkway to Athabasca Falls, a powerful, picturesque waterfall. Continue to the Columbia Icefield where you will ride on an Ice Explorer vehicle to the middle of the Athabasca Glacier. Your driver/guide will explain how glaciers are formed and point out some interesting geological features. At the mid-point, you will have the

option of stepping out onto ice formed from snow falling as long as 400 years ago. Afterwards, a brief stop will be made at scenic Bow Lake before arriving in Lake Louise.

Jasper Highlights tour Jasper National Park is a World Heritage Site and Canada’s largest National Park. On this half-day tour you will visit two of the beautiful lakes in the region—Patricia Lake and Pyramid Lake—and Maligne Canyon, one of the most spectacular gorges in the Canadian Rockies, with sheer limestone walls that plunge to depths of over 50 metres. Jasper is also home to a wide variety of wildlife including bears, hoary marmots, elk, moose and deer. Keep an eye out for some of these creatures on this tour.

Summit Helicopter tour See the Rocky Mountains from a unique perspective. This 12-minute helicopter tour will take you 2,300 metres above sea level. stop will be the Capilano Suspension Bridge, a suspended footbridge stretching 137 metres across and 70 metres above the Capilano River, then walk 30 metres above the rainforest floor at the Treetops Adventure. Next, visit Grouse Mountain. Take the Skyride gondola to the top of the mountain and visit the wildlife refuge where you can see grizzly bears close up; then spend some time to take in the breathtaking views of the city, ocean and surrounding mountains.

yoho national Park tour (between lake louise and Banff)

A half-day tour takes you into Yoho National Park to view some of its wonders. Your first stop will be the Spiral Tunnels. This engineering marvel was built by the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1909 to improve safety on a steep hill, and trains can be seen travelling through Mount Ogden and Cathedral Mountain. You will then visit Emerald Lake, with its vivid emerald-coloured waters. This is the largest lake in Yoho National Park and one of the most spectacular in the region, with a unique selection of flora. The last stop is a natural rock bridge formation that spans the flow of the Kicking Horse River. The bridge is sculpted by the erosive forces of rushing water over what had once been a waterfall.

wildlife Canada’s West is home to a surprisingly wide variety of flora and fauna. Each geographical area we travel through offers something a little different. You never know what is ahead— a bear or a moose—but keep your camera at the ready in case they do appear. Don’t worry, they’re not shy of the paparazzi.

History awaits! Retrace the steps of gritty explorers, but sidestep the saddle sores and mule-stink to travel in pure luxury. The First Passage to the West carries history buffs on a breathtaking route past pivotal spots in Canadian history, including the Spiral Tunnels as well as the celebrated Last Spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Rugged mountains and raging rivers showcase the grand, often terrifying power of nature and stand testimony to the marvels of engineering and the indomitable human will.

Vancouver to Kamloops After boarding at the Vancouver Station, guests will travel through the fertile fields of the Fraser Valley. Picturesque farmland gives way to the towering peaks of the Coast Mountains before the rumble of raging waters hail the arrival of Hell’s Gate. Piney forests turn into the abstract beauty of dusty desert hills as guests pull in to spend the night at Kamloops—BC’s gateway to the Interior.

First Passage to the WestVancouVer – Kamloops – laKe louise – Banff – calgary

Departing from the iconic port city of Vancouver, guests will embark on a journey past flower-studded fields and misty coastal shores. Witness rich aboriginal heritage and colourful remnants of a pioneering past on the only passenger train that retraces Canada’s most historic route.

Kamloops to Lake Louise, Banff or Calgary The journey continues east along the South Thompson River past Craigellachie, the site of the Last Spike, which completed the historic Canadian Pacific Railway, uniting Canada from east to west. Continue onwards to Rogers Pass with its sparking glaciers and rail tunnels. The journey climaxes with a dramatic climb through the engineering marvel of the Spiral Tunnels. End your journey in the resort town of Lake Louise, the alpine-inspired village of Banff, or stampede on to Calgary.

Enjoy this route Eastbound (EB) or Westbound (WB). All itineraries are shown Eastbound. To assist when booking, please use the Tour Codes found in the top right corner.

Embark on a journey of other-worldly beauty as nature’s wonders line up one after another. From the raging waters of Hell’s Gate to the serenity of Mount Robson, which rises like an empress from the surrounding plain, shutterbugs can expect an acute case of trigger finger.

Big game animals dart elusively around the icefields of Jasper—a wondrous lesson of erosive geography. And don’t forget to capture abundant footage of the icy blue glacier-fed lakes and weeping waterfalls.

Vancouver to Kamloops After boarding at the Vancouver Station, guests will travel through the fertile fields of the Fraser Valley. Picturesque farmland gives way to the towering peaks of the Coast Mountains before the rumble of raging waters herald the arrival of Hell’s Gate. Piney forests turn into the abstract beauty of dusty desert hills as guests pull in to spend the night at Kamloops—BC’s gateway to the Interior.

Journey through the CloudsVancouVer – Kamloops – Jasper

Whitewater rapids meander through green valleys and bite at the shores on this majestic journey past fanning glaciers and saw-toothed peaks. For most visitors, this enigmatic landscape represents the quintessential Canadian experience—the ability to witness the boundless expanses of nature in its most awe-inspiring and rawest form.

Kamloops to Jasper Continue the journey by following the lapping and leaping Thompson River along the vertiginous walls of the Fraser Canyon. Rolling hills morph into snowy peaks before Pyramid Falls tumbles out of its hanging valley and falls 92 metres into the North Thompson River below. Finally, the glittering Albreda Icefields and glorious Mount Robson mark the entry to the World Heritage Site of Jasper.

Enjoy this route Eastbound (EB) or Westbound (WB). All itineraries are shown Eastbound. To assist when booking, please use the Tour Codes found in the top right corner.

Mystery and history intertwine on the last major track of coastal temperate rainforest as storytellers explore Canada’s greatest pandemic—gold fever!

The Pacific rainforest is a vast and wild region of scattered islands, fabulous fjords and towering peaks. Ancient 100-metre cedars strain the sunlight as the wildlife watches warily from the shadows. This is a sacred place—home to the rare white Kermode, or spirit bear. As the greenery changes and placid lakes give way to the desert-like terrain of gold country, listen carefully for the ghostly echoes of the prospectors who came to find their fortunes but often lost their lives.

Before arriving in Jasper, one of Canada’s pre-eminent National Parks, watch for the 3,954-metre majesty of Mount Robson, which soars higher than any peak in the Rockies and stuns onlookers with its peerless form and grand beauty.

Whistler to Quesnel Depart from Whistler to the historic shorelines of Anderson and Seton Lakes, which allowed steamboats to open the interior of BC for colonization. Just beyond lies the semi-desert scrub of the Fraser Canyon and the volcanic plateau of the Cariboo Plateau ranchlands. The day concludes as the train follows the Fraser River into Quesnel.

Rainforest to Gold Rushwhistler – QUesNel – JAsPer

Travel through fertile river valleys lined with Sitka spruce and Pacific silver fir up to 1,500 years old. These towering giants bear witness to an unchanging landscape reputedly guarded by ancient spirits. After leaving the lush expanses, meander through lonely hills before stopping overnight at Gold Pan City, more popularly known as Quesnel. Climb aboard the next morning and follow valleys cleaved by white water, pass sheer rock faces and alpine meadows, and gaze up at magnificent Mount Robson before arriving in Jasper.

Quesnel to Jasper Next morning, the journey continues east through the ethereal borders of Northern BC where the mysterious influence of the First Nations people is felt more strongly than anywhere else. The Rocky Mountain trench gives way to the mountains that rise steeply to the north and south. Visitors will have a chance to photograph Mount Robson, the summit of heights in BC at 3,954 metres, before departing at the heritage town of Jasper.

Enjoy this route Eastbound (EB) or Westbound (WB). All itineraries are shown Eastbound. To assist when booking, please use the Tour Codes found in the top right corner.

Rocky Mountaineer’s success owes much to the unspoiled scenery, fresh air and abundant wildlife of western Canada. As a result, we take it as our personal responsibility to preserve and steward the natural environment of the regions where we operate. Here are some of the ways we are keeping it green:

Plant a Tree and Save the Earth

…well, at least doing a part to save the beauty we see from our trains for generations to come. For the yearly anniversary of each of our employees, we plant a tree along our routes. We have planted almost 3,000 trees since 2009.

Save the SalmonIn a bid to help sustain and protect the natural environment along our rail routes, we entered into a long-term financial partnership with the Pacific Salmon Foundation, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to rebuilding sustainable and naturally diverse salmon stocks. The unprecedented eight-year commitment which began in 2007 is the equivalent of two salmon life cycles.

Starting Smart—Reducing Fuel Consumption, Exhaust Emissions and Noise PollutionZTR Smart Start technology has been installed in all Rocky Mountaineer’s locomotives. This Canadian system automatically manages the shutdown and restart of the locomotive engines, significantly reducing fuel consumption, exhaust emissions and noise pollution.

Waste Reduction a Key FocusWe have implemented new policies and partnered with recycling operators in various communities along our rail routes. Three days a week when the train arrives into Vancouver, all leftover food is donated to the local Food Bank.

In 2012, we eliminated water bottles onboard the train. This single initiative has reduced the use of over 60,000 plastic bottles every season.

If you decide to travel with Rocky Mountaineer and make payment on a tour, you thereby agree to accept the terms and conditions of this contract.

2. brochure Prices All prices herein are quoted in European Euros (EUR) and include Canadian GST and/or HST and port taxes. Please refer to Section 4 for further details regarding GST/HST. Prices and information in this brochure are for the 2013 season and are subject to change without notice.

3. exchange rateThe exchange rate used in calculating the published prices has been determined by Rocky Mountaineer based upon current and expected currency exchange rates at time of publication. As such, the converted EUR prices appearing in this brochure should only be used as a guide, and may differ from the price at actual time of booking. Rocky Mountaineer cannot be held responsible for any changes that may occur and reserves the right to increase the price of any travel arrangement up to the date of departure. This includes, but is not limited to, exchange rate adjustments, fuel surcharges, and airfare increases. Deposits along with final payments must be in the same currency as the booking. Changes to bookings such as alterations to services, or cancellations are charged in the same currency of the original booking, and each change is subject to the current pricing as per the date of change.

4. canadian goods and services tax (gst)/harmonized sales tax (hst)

All prices are subject to GST and/or HST, which will be charged upon confirmation of booking. Currently the rate is 5% for Canadian GST and 12% for BC HST. Applicable taxes may vary by departure location. Guests who are not residents of Canada are eligible for a rebate of the GST/HST paid on short-term accommodation. If they are purchasing their rail tour from outside Canada, Rocky Mountaineer may claim the rebate on their behalf. The result is a 50% reduction in the tax rate. When non-resident guests purchase their rail tour while in Canada, Rocky Mountaineer charges GST/HST at the full rate, and any GST/HST rebate to which a visitor to Canada may be entitled must be claimed from the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency by the guest.
