Pierre Fabre : Mission and Values
6
7
We take care of human beings as a whole, in all their diversity.
In order to do this, we design and deve-lop innovative solutions that contribute to people’s well-being, from health to beauty. We achieve this by cooperating with health care professionals, our trusted partners worldwide; by constantly drawing inspira-tion from nature and plants; and by placing pharmaceutical ethics at the very heart of our operations.
Originally a retail pharmacist, Pierre Fabre
decided to shift his retail mission to an
industrial scale, providing a comprehen-
sive response to the therapeutic needs and
well-being of patients.
As a result of this philosophy, the company
has developed a large portfolio of complemen-
tary activities, from prescription medication
(oncology, neuropsychiatry, dermatology, and
women’s health) to dermo-cosmetic products
(Avène, Klorane, Ducray, A-Derma, Galénic,
René Furterer, Darrow, Glytone, and Elancyl
brands), as well as pharmacy medication (Drill,
Elgydium, etc.) and natural health remedies
(Naturactive).
Convinced that the 250,000 known fl owering
plants and some that are yet to be discovered
are treasure troves for health and beauty, Pierre
Fabre has made research on plant substances
a major focus of its activities. The objective of
this research is to develop active ingredients
for health care and dermo-cosmetic purposes.
This fi rm belief has led the company to go to
great lengths to highlight the natural heritage of
its various sites, which are replete with carefully
maintained gardens and green spaces.
The Pierre Fabre Group has an annualturnover of 2 billion euros.International operations represent 56% of overall turnover.

Every year, Pierre Fabre allocates approxi-mately 20% of its pharmaceutical revenue to research and development activities.
Our research centers that employ nearly
1,100 people are all located in France: in
Castres (neuropsychiatry), Toulouse (onco-
logy, dermatology and dermo-cosmetics),
and Saint-Julien-en-Genevois (cancer-fi ghting
biotechnology).
Nearly 80% of our research and development
employees are located in the Midi-Pyrénées
(Toulouse) region.
R&D is organized around 3 priority areas:
> Oncology
> Neuropsychiatry
> Dermatology
Pierre Fabre works in close partnership with a
number of public research bodies (INSERM,
CNRS, Paris VI, etc.). For the past 10 years,
Pierre Fabre has maintained a joint Research
and Service Unit with the CNRS.
This joint team is based at the Pierre Fabre
Research and Development Center at the
Toulouse Oncopole life science campus, and
aims to develop medications that target epige-
netic gene regulation in cancer.
Pierre Fabre combines pharmaceutical and
dermo-cosmetic research, thus creating
innovative bridges between these two com-
plementary areas. Over the years, a wealth
of transversal expertise has been developed
in areas such as dermatology, plant research,
and natural ingredient properties.

Pierre Fabre has 10,000 employees, more than two-thirds of which are located in France.
Nearly 2,700 of our employees are based in
the French department of Tarn (Midi-Pyrénées
region), where our laboratories were foun-
ded. Pierre Fabre is in fact the number one
employer in (Midi-Pyrénées region) this depart-
ment. The company is also the second largest
private employer in the Midi-Pyrénées region.
95% of all products sold by Pierre Fabre are
made in France. Health care and pharmaceu-
tical production is located in Gien, Château-
Renard (Loiret), Pau (Pyrénées Atlantiques),
Aignan (Gers) and Cahors (Lot). Dermo-cos-
metic production is located in Soual (Tarn),
Mazamet (Tarn) and Avène (Hérault).
2,300 employees work in our plants in France.
By focusing its R&D investments in France,
the Group helps to create research centers of
international caliber. In order to recruit and
retain th best researchers in the country.
Pierre Fabre invests signifi cantly in France every year.
Recent investments:
> 2010 - The opening of the Research and
Development Center at the Oncopole
campus in Toulouse: 40,000 m2 of labora-
tories and offi ce space, and 550 on-site

In 2008, Mr. Pierre Fabre donated the majority of its stake in the company to the Pierre Fabre Foundation, a government-recognized public-interest foundation. He completed his donation in 2013 by making the Foundation his sole legatee. The Foundation is the Group’s majority shareholder, a fi rst in France.

Théron Périé: The Pierre Fabre Foundation head offi ce in Castres.
The Foundation is the majority shareholder of Pierre Fabre Laboratories.
Pierre Fabre has been serving health care
for over 50 years. The Foundation continues this work,
helping to strengthen public health programs in several
developing countries in Africa and southeast Asia.
It is a foundation under French law, and is recognized
as being of public interest.
The Pierre Fabre Foundation plays a decisive
role in the governance of the Pierre Fabre
Group and is instrumental to its long term
continuity. As the majority shareholder (86%)
of Pierre Fabre Laboratories, the Pierre Fabre
Foundation is the only French non-profi t
organization to own a large industrial com-
pany. This means that potential profi t to be
distributed by Pierre Fabre Laboratories in
the form of dividends is primarily paid to the
Foundation, in order to enable it to fulfi ll its
general interest mission. However, although
the Foundation is the company’s majority
shareholder, it is not directly involved in its
operational management.
The Foundation is dedicated to fulfi lling the
objectives specifi ed in its statutes, and
remains impartial, independent and wholly
committed to its mission, that is to improve
access to quality medication and care in the
least developed and developing countries.
Pierre Fabre Locations in France
For over 50 years, the company’s continued development has been
combined with an ambitious geographic strategy, inspired by the Group’s
values.
Pierre Fabre has always strived to keep corporate units personal and
manageable, to help employees work in the best possible conditions.
Pierre Fabre has sought fi rm integration in its local economic fabric, and
has thus often chosen locations in mid-sized towns and even in rural
areas (Gaillac, Mazamet, Soual, Saint-Julien-en-Genevois, Château-Re-
nard and Lavaur). The company has always aimed to combine its own
corporate growth with regional growth.
Our focus on local integration also refl ects our concern about preserving
and enhancing heritage. Our locations are often noteworthy in terms of
industrial, cultural (Sorèze) or family (Castres for example) heritage. We
are committed to keep this heritage alive. Even our most modern loca-
tions, such as the Toulouse Oncopole Research and Development Center
and Les Cauquillous head offi ce in Lavaur, are part of the history and
geography of their host locations.
Through the way it discretely tames its surrounding nature, the com-pany conveys its founding values: aesthetics, rigor, heritage preser-vation and humanism.

Combining Heritageand Aesthetics
Pierre Fabre entrusted the design of its
most iconic buildings to Roger Taillibert,
member of the Institut de France, and
President of the Académie des Beaux
Arts. More than anyone else, he was
able to skillfully and boldly embody the
company’s identity.
Roger Taillibert is an undisputed
concrete shell specialist. Throughout
his entire career, he relentlessly perfec-
ted this technique to serve high-quality form and function. He freed the
medium of its rigidity, lending it newfound fl exibility and fl uidity. The space
and light that his concepts incorporate symbolize a beacon of hope for
life and good health.
Roger Taillibert is the architect behind stadiums such as the Parc des
Princes in Paris, the Olympic Stadium of Montreal, the Khalifa International
Stadium in Qatar, and the International Sports Complex of Luxemburg.
Pierre Fabre considers that this architect has supported and followed the
Group’s development with ever-renewed inspiration. He designed the
very fi rst Research Center in Péraudel and the Group’s very fi rst factory in
Soual. He later created the Research Center in Saint Julien-en-Genevois,
the Distribution Center in Ussel, the dermo-cosmetics head offi ce named
Les Cauquillous in Lavaur, and most recently the Research and Develop-
ment Center at the Oncopole in Toulouse.
Roger Taillibert has succeeded in creating a harmonious architectu-ral language that expresses the company’s values of humanism and generosity.

History
Built in 1875 by Eugene Fau, a textile manu-
facturer in Castres, the domain was later
acquired by the Liebersac family, who lived
in Paris. It was a Liebersac family tradition
to spend summers at Le Carla. In 1968, Le
Carla Domain was transferred to the Refor-
med Church of France, and divided into
3 plots.
Mr. Pierre Fabre acquired the 3 plots in 1971,
and thereby could recreate the original estate.
Le Carla Domain houses the head offi ce of the Pierre Fabre Chairmanship. It is a place for meetings that fosters communication, where the Group’s
partnerships are usually concluded.
Pierre Fabre has installed a 14 rooms hotel and a restaurant on-site, which enables the company to host the Group’s various visitors on a daily basis.
Le Carla Domain also includes the company showroom, which displays all of the Group’s product ranges and brands.

HistoryPierre Fabre acquired the Péraudel site in
1960.
During World War II, it was in this historic
building that the agreement for surrendering
the occupation troops’ garrison was signed
on Sunday, August 20th, 1944, at 3:00 P.M.,
in the presence of Commander Dunoyer de
Segonzac (Hugues) and Captain Lamon
(Dumoulin) for the French Forces of the In-
terior, and of Colonel Machts and Captain
März for the German army.
It is in Péraudel that Pierre Fabre’s re-search began to truly take shape in 1968.
In 1969, this property already housed a
number of departments including those
dealing with scientifi c documentation ser-
vices, biochemistry, phytochemistry, organic
synthesis, as well as a virology laboratory.
Our three main areas of research into active
ingredients already coexisted at this time
(synthetic chemistry, natural substances,
biology).
Located on the Péraudel site in Castres, this Research Center is specialized in central nervous system disorders, particularly psychoses (schizophrenia,
bipolar disorders, depression) and neurology (chronic pain).

HistoryThis mansion is located south of Castres
and was built in 1834, in typical Directoire
style: straight, symmetrical lines with classical
pediments.
The site’s other key feature is its French
Formal Garden, dating from the 1920s. It was
inspired by the Bishop’s Garden in the city of
Castres, which was designed by Le Nôtre (in
the 17th century).
The arabesque-trimmed hedges in the beds
are gone now, but there are still 82 topiaries
that confer majesty upon the garden. These
topiaries create a perspective that guides
one’s eye down to the banks of the Sor.

The Soual site is a historical dermo-cosmetics factory. It manufactures
and packages dermo-cosmetic products of brands such as Ducray,
A-Derma, René Furterer, Klorane, Galénic, and Elancyl. In terms of pro-
duction volume and number of employees, Soual is the Group’s largest
industrial site. It has 35 packaging lines, and 15 manufacturing platforms.
In 2012, the site was expanded to better respond to increasing demand
and requirements from our clients worldwide. This 13,500 m2 extension
is primarily used to produce sterile cosmetic products.
Pierre Fabre invented a new standard for dermo-cosmetics: sterile cosmetics. This standard is the only one of its kind in the world, combining three major innovations (formulation, packaging and manufacturing). This new standard that guarantees that products are free of preservatives and preservative substances, that they remain sterile and protected throughout their use, via a hermetically sealed patented packaging system named (DEFI).

Father Lacordaire breathed new life into
the school, with its reputation extending far
beyond the region and the country.
Sorèze has become a remarkable center of
intelligence and education: true to its origins,
this site has been an intellectual nexus from
as early as the 18th century, where the uni-

with innovative methods.
Up until the school closed in 1991, students
from around the world came to this institu-

Located on the Oncopole campus in Toulouse, the Pierre Fabre Research
and Development Center is exceptional in its class. This site hosts all of
the teams and equipment that are required for new molecules develop-
ment and production. Based on public and private partnerships, the Cen-
ter’s research efforts focus on chemical, biological and natural molecules.
This Center also hosts a Research and Service Unit as per French law,
USR 3388. This unit includes teams from both the CNRS (the French
National Center for Scientifi c Research) and the Pierre Fabre Research
Institute. Its mission is to conduct research on mechanisms for the epige-
netic regulation of cancer and to screen anti-cancer active ingredients.
This unusual building designed by the architect Roger Taillibert is a futuris-
tic and functional working tool that embodies the company’s commitment
to “inventing” the future. In 2012, it received the International Architecture
Award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum.
The Pierre Fabre Research and Development Center at theOncopole is the result of the Group’s desire to be a global player in the oncology fi eld. Wile focusing, it focuses its R&D investments in France, particularly in the region in which the Group was founded.
Activities> Identifying new biological targets
of therapeutic interest, through
genomics and proteomics
> Implementing research projects that use
innovative treatments for solid tumors
and hematological malignancies
> Early development of new chemical
and biological entities
> Developing new clinical indications
and presentations
> Identifying and perfecting innovative
substances for use in dermo-cosmetics
HistoryThe Oncopole project is fi rst and fore-most a commitment to a region to which our company is deeply attached.
After the dramatic explosion of the nitrogen
fertilizer factory in Toulouse in September
2001, Mr. Pierre Fabre made a personal
commitment to rehabilitating the site, with
the Greater Toulouse community. He there-
fore suggested hosting part of our Research
and Development Activities on the site.
When the french national cancer strategy
(“Plan Cancer”) was announced, Pierre
Fabre naturally wanted to participate in the
development of the Oncopole in Toulouse.
This facility contains several public and
private research bodies, and also houses a
public clinic, the University Cancer Institute.

Ever since 1743, when the very fi rst spa facility was built near the Sainte-
Odile spring, the vocation of the spa resort of Avène has remained the
same: the resort is exclusively devoted to dermatology and to dermato-
logical treatments for skin diseases, for people of all ages, even infants.
Located in the heart of the Haut-Languedoc nature reserve (“Parc Natu-
rel du Haut-Languedoc”), the facility hosts about 2,700 patients annually,
25% of which are children. In 2010, the Avène establishment was the
fi rst dermatology approved resort to obtain Aquacert HACCP Therma-

Pierre Fabreworldwide
Very early on, Pierre Fabre was determined to develop a presence out-
side of France. The company fi rst looked to Southern Europe. This was
a natural choice for a company based closed to Spain. It was actually in
Barcelona that the Group opened its fi rst subsidiary, in 1970. Spain was
soon to be followed by Portugal, Italy, and Greece. Our dermo-cosmetic
brands are now prominent players in these four countries.
Our international development is rooted in a faithful application of the
model that made the company a success in France. Mr. Pierre Fabre,
a licensed pharmacist, always wanted to offer products covering all the
therapeutic needs and well-being of his patients, ranging from health to
beauty. As such, we rely on the recommendations and advice of health
professionals. In every single country where we operate, the principle
of this virtuous continuum - doctor, pharmacist, patient – does prevail,
for drugs obviously but we also apply it to OTC and dermo-cosmetics.
However, this is a model that we will adjust to the particularities of each
international market.
This is how China has become the fl agship of our international success.
Avène is the best-selling dermo-cosmetic brand in China. It was launched
in 2003, and has been a partner of the China Dermatologist Association
since 2008. To adapt to the specifi cities of the Chinese market, Avène
is mainly distributed in department stores, in dedicated spaces run by a
network of advisors trained in skin care diagnosis and appropriate pro-
duct recommendations.
In our approach, we listen to all cultures, develop trustworthy relationships
with local health professionals, and adapt to the reality of the distribution
channels for each market, while always staying true to our high standards
in professional advice provided in the right environment to refl ect the tech-
nical sophistication of our products. This is how we brought to the world
what we have built in our birthplace.
Through a network of subsidiaries in 44 countries*, including all the major emerging economies, and distribution agreements in over 130 countries, Pierre Fabre achieves nearly 60% of its sales on foreign markets. The company has nearly 3,500 employees outside of France, an increase of 50% between 2003 and 2013.
