OnderwijsHet onderwijs van de Faculteit Bio-ingenieursweten-

schappen (FBW) van de Universiteit Gent vormt experten

in de levende materie die zich specialiseren in: bodem-,

water-, bos- en natuurbeheer, landbouw, chemie vande agro- en voedingsindustrie, bioprocestechnologie,

milieutechnologie en cel- en genbiotechnologie.

Het onderwijs volgt de recentste evoluties in deze

vakgebieden. Cursusinhoud en opleidingsaanbod

worden geregeld bijgewerkt en afgestemd op nieuwe

noden. De FBW biedt 2 types ingenieursopleidingen

aan: bio-ingenieurs zijn conceptingenieurs die van

een individueel probleem naar een algemeen concept

toewerken terwijl industrieel ingenieurs gevormd

worden tot applicatie-ingenieurs die net vanuit een

algemeen concept naar een concrete oplossing streven.

Deze twee evenwaardige opleidingen vereisen elk andere kennis en vaardigheden. Wel beogen

ze beiden hetzelfde: bedrijven en overheid waardevolle ondersteuning garanderen.

Naast de ingenieursopleidingen en een Nederlandstalige master-na-masteropleiding, biedt de

faculteit ook 7 Engelstalige masteropleidingen, 1 Engelstalig Subsequent Master’s Programme

(zie Engelstalig onderdeel) en verschillende korte opleidingsprogramma’s aan rond specifieke

onderwerpen. Voor sommige programma’s zijn ook beurzen ter beschikking.

Permanente vormingAanvullend voorziet het Instituut voor Permanente Vorming (IVPV) kortere opleidingen als

antwoord op de grote vraag vanuit de industrie en overheid naar levenslang leren en

ondersteuning van de afgestudeerden in hun professionele loopbaan.

Wetenschappelijk onderzoek De faculteit biedt unieke mogelijkheden voor multidisciplinair onderzoek met een hoge maat-

Onze sterkte situeert zich vooral in de kwantitatieve, holistische aanpak en de geïntegreerde

kennis en optimalisatie van de volledige keten van ontwikkeling, sturing, productie, ver-

werking en valorisatie van primaire natuurlijke grondstoffen naar zowel voedings- als niet

voedingstoepassingen en andere ecosysteemdiensten. Daarom hebben diverse vakgroepenvan de faculteit zich verenigd in consortia rond verschillende thema’s. Deze zijn een kwalitatief

platform voor de valorisatie van onderzoek voor zowel bedrijven als de samenleving.

Aan de faculteit zijn er een groot aantal Belgische

en buitenlandse doctorandi. Als doctoraatsstudent

krijg je de kans om gedurende een viertal jaren

intensief aan onderzoek te doen in een interna-

tionaal competitief milieu en word je als lid van

een doctoral school (zie: http://www.ugent.be/doctoralschools/en) ondersteund door onder meer

algemene vaardigheidscursussen en trainingen.

Education

The Faculty of Bioscience Engineering (FBE) is a leading

faculty in international education programmes such as

Erasmus, Erasmus Mundus, Atlantis and other internationalfunded cooperation programmes and is involved in a lot of

national and international funded research programmes in

EU and non-EU countries. The faculty has alumni from over

95 countries.

The study programmes focus on biological, physical and

chemical sciences, thereby aiming at the sustainable pro-duction and processing of plant and animal material and the

management and protection of nature and the environment.

The Faculty hosts a large number of Belgian and foreign PhD students. PhD students

become a member of a doctoral school and get the opportunity to conduct four years

of intensive research in an internationally competitive environment. The Doctoral School

provides support amongst others by organising various specialised courses and

transferable skill training courses and provides guidance through the research process

by annual progress reports. Moreover, it can fund attendance to (international) coursesand conferences.
