RISING 10TH GRADE - COLLEGE FRESHMAN Learning in groups of 4 or 5, campers sample various aspects of zoo medicine. Classes include hands-on experiences with live animals and medical equipment inside the Zoo veterinary hospital. Campers go outside, too, enjoying a special, behind-the- scenes tour at a Zoo exhibit before learning to use radio telemetry to track wild animals and a dart gun to medicate free- ranging creatures. Campers also work with live animals, learning to conduct physical exams, to handle some (small) wild creatures and to bandage injured animals. Real first-aid training has campers practicing lifesaving CPR and other skills on working dog and cat mannequins. As their confidence builds, campers enter a surgery mode, learning to suture wounds and to monitor surgery patients’ vital signs. Finally, campers graduate to performing sham surgeries on milk-jug pigs and artificial turtle shells. To cap it off, campers bounce through the elk and bison exhibit (on a flatbed truck) to assess the health of animals on exhibit.
