Palm Jumeirah - Vibro Compaction Works

Palm Jumeirah was the first of the trilogy of Palm projects which have

succesfully been reclaimed and compacted . For the Pal Jumeirah

project, our Client, APPC, utilized our fleet of powerful and effective deep-soil

vibrators.

gdemand and to facilitate the extremelyurgent programme requirements.

At the peak of production in excess of 60vibroflots were being used on site in order tocompact 140Mm³ of sand in a time period of18months.

Treatment depth varied from 15m to 30mTreatment depth varied from 15m to 30mdepending on the location and a triangularcompaction grid spacing of 4.5m was used.

Jubail , KSA– Stone Column works

FCG designed and constructed a grid of Stone Columns to enhance the soil bearing capacity to 150 kPa and limit total and differentialto 150 kPa and limit total and differentialsettlements.

Stone Columns were installed over an area of approx. 6,000m² for the BOPP factory line-2 adjacent to the existing line-1for Gulf Packaging Industries

To achieve the design criteria 936 stone gcolumns of 0.80 m diameter were installed on a 2.50 m x 2.50 m grid. The depth of the stone columns reached a depth between 7 m and 10 m.

Two Full Scale Load Tests (FSLT) were performed to verify the design criteria and to prove the success of the soil improvement.. At a design load of 125kPa in FSLT 1 thea design load of 125kPa in FSLT-1 thesettlement recorded was 6.03mm, in FSLT-2 6.25mm

DEWA/ETA, Dubai– Stone Columns

Design-Built project for the soil improvement with stone columns for three new DEWA substation projects in Dubai. Performance criteria consisted on soil’s Net Bearing Capacity 270 kPa (safety factor included) and differential settlement of less than 25 mmthan 25 mm.

Some of the challenges of this project included the installation of the stone columns under the constraints of existing adjacent structures and vital lines such as water pipelines and the Dubai Metro. FCG proposed the monitoring of vibrations to sensitive structures.

Vibro Replacement (Stone Columns)

Eff ti t h i f i t f ft l i d d it f l iltEffective technique for improvement of soft clays, mixed deposits of clay, siltand sand with fines more than 10% and fine sands. Reduces the liquefaction potential of fine sands where the ground water table is at a shallow depth.

Suitability & Applications

Effective in Soft clays, mixed deposits of clay, silt and sandand in fine sandsand in fine sands

Principle Replacing the soft material with well gradedcompacted stones with the help of Vibro flots. The replacement acts as reinforcement for softsoils and also improve the drainage properties

QA / QC By continuous SPT or CPTU and plate / zonel d t tload tests

Common applications Embankments, Warehouses, Buildings, BridgeAbutments and in Storage tanks

Max depth 40m

Vibro-CompactionVibro-CompactionVibro-Compaction

Effective in Loose coarse grained soil with silt / clay

Vibro-compaction is an effective technique for improvement of loose granular soils with fines content less than 10%. Vibro-compaction is the rearrangement of soil particles into a denser configuration by the use of powerful depth vibrators.

Suitability & Applications

Effective in Loose coarse grained soil with silt / claycontent less than 10%

Principle Densification by special vibration equipments called Vibroflots or pokers

QA / QC By continuous SPT or CPTuCommon applications Buildings, Man made islands, pipelines,

road and rail embankmentsMax depth 60m

Page 13: Brochure

Dynamic Compaction

Dynamic compaction is a method that is used to increase the density of the soil when certain subsurface constraints make other methods inappropriate. It is a method that is used to increase the density of soil deposits.

Suitability & Applications

Effective in Sands and silty sands can be improved with dynamic compaction. Old fills and granular soils are most often treated. The soils that are below the water table have to be treated carefully to permit emission of the excess pore water pressure that is created when the weight is dropped onto the surface. Method is not effective in clays.

Principle Compaction of loose granular fills by means of dropping a heavy weight repeatedly on the ground at regularly spaced intervals. The weight and the height determine the amount ofand the height determine the amount ofcompaction hat would occur.

QA / QC By continuous SPT or CPTuCommon applications Buildings, Man made islands, pipelines, road

and rail embankments, mining, etcMax depth 9m

Jet GroutingJet GroutingJet Grouting

Jet grouting is a method of grouting that uses very high pressure streams (6,000 psi or 40 MPa) of grout to erode replace mix and cement soils Jet grout constructionor 40 MPa) of grout to erode, replace, mix, and cement soils. Jet grout constructionuses a rotating and rising drill rod with small nozzles that direct the grout horizontally to form columns of soilcrete or soil-cement. Typical column diameters are 2 to 6 ft. Jet grouting is the only type of grouting that is capable of treating all types of soils from clays to gravel. Jet grouting is also useful in grouting isolated zones of soil and for grouting around and below buried utilities.

Suitability & Applications

Effective in All kind of soilsPrinciple Chemical Stabilization and reinforcement by means of

injecting soil cement mixture with special kind of equipments manufactured for this purpose

QA / QC By continuous SPT or CPTU Commonapplications

Soil Stabilization, Excavation Support Systems, Structural Underpinning, Seepage Barrier/Cutoff Walls, Environmental Remediation

Max depth 35m

Diaphragm WallsDiaphragm WallsDiaphragm Walls

Diaphragm walls are underground structural elements commonly used for retentionDiaphragm walls are underground structural elements commonly used for retentionsystems and permanent foundation walls. They can also be used as deep groundwater barriers. Diaphragm walls can be constructed in all types of soil, even below the ground water table.

Suitability & Applications

Effective in All kind of soilsP i i l P idi b i t ti t t flPrinciple Providing a barrier or retention to prevent flow

of groundwater or sliding of soils by means of underground structural elements made of reinforced concrete or plastic concrete material.

Common applications Strengthening of existing foundation, cut off wall constructions, cut and cover methods for ,underground canal constructions

Surface CompactionSurface CompactionSurface Compaction

Compaction of a soil surface is achieved by means of an impact roller designed for thispurpose. Effective in granular soils with fines content less than 10% or in soils whichare suitable for the Vibro compaction.

Suitability & Applications

Effective in Granular soils which are suitable for Vibrocompaction

Principle Compaction of loose granular fills by means ofPrinciple Compaction of loose granular fills by means ofan impact roller which has a movable, wheeled carriage and an impact roller coupled resiliently to the carriage so as to move together with the carriage. The impact roller has one or more out-of-round compactor masses designed to apply periodic impact blows to the soil surface.

land fills, mine haul roads and bulk earth works.

Max depth 3 to 4m

Geotechnical Investigation

Before and after Ground Improvements Geotechnical Investigations have to be done. FCG is able to do CPT-Testing (Cone Penetration Test) worldwide using his own CPT – Truck which is operated by professional staff.

The CPT is the worldwide most used in situ testing method used to determine the geotechnical engineering properties of the soil and the stratigraphy of the soil.
