*BUFFALO TOURS TRAVEL BROCHURE 2010 * INTRODUCTION 2

From the BuFFalo tours team

Despite the economic situation of 2009 and the challenges we have all faced over the last year, there have been many positives, with Buffalo Tours continuing to provide world class, top quality travel services to over 30,000 passengers. In fact, Buffalo Tours even took the bold move of continuing to invest and expand our capacities and competencies, introducing our own operations in Cambodia and Laos and adding the destination of Thailand to the Buffalo portfolio. And why stop there? Buffalo Tours also opened a Sales Office in Australia and a Representative Office in Moscow, in addition to our presence in the UK and Germany.

2010 will be a very interesting year with the possible slow recovery of global economies and international travelers to the region. With accommodation and service prices remaining competitive and the weakening of the US dollar (in a region where USD dominates), we expect this will be an excellent year to travel. Greater value may be achieved through booking early, as well as flexibility for travelers who wish to book at the last minute.

An additional service that has been introduced for 2010 is our newly launched Agent Website. With online tariffs, news alerts, hotel information and photo library, this site will be a valuable resource for all our partners.

Meanwhile the increased demand in volunteer and educational travel has seen the Buffalo crew working hard to develop new product. We have introduced dynamic and well researched projects across Indochina and Thailand, such as our exclusive ‘Seuang River Experience’ in Luang Prabang, the building of a refuge for trafficked and abused children in Northern Thailand and a Biogas initiative in rural Northern Vietnam in conjunction with a Non Government Organisation.

We have also created a ‘Buffalo Green’ logo to indicate accommodation and tour options that adhere to responsible travel guidelines, and over the next year we will be grading all our tours on our Buffalo Green responsible travel benchmarks.

Inside this brochure you will discover fine examples of exciting new off the beaten track destinations, such as the less travelled route of Central Vietnam’s Phong – Nha Ke Bang National Park with its spectacular caves and limestone karsts, to Buffalo’s unique and exclusive establishment of adventure tour infrastructure in remote Ha Giang, far Northern Vietnam.

There are also innovative new adventure options for hiking and biking in rural Cambodia, staying overnight in monasteries, as well as action packed kayaking experiences in the un-spoilt eco paradise of Laos. With the opening of our Thailand office our product has greatly expanded across the country, particularly in the North and North East region, with plenty of choices for responsible and authentic travel experiences.

With all this growth Buffalo Tours still manages to maintain its ‘family feel’, the faces behind the names remain consistent year after year, and our full attention is given to flexibility of product and pricing and a high level of personalized service to all our partners.

Happy travelling in 2010!

Day 2Hanoi – SapaEnjoy a guided city tour of Hanoi (celebrating its 1000th year anniversary in 2010), where its rich history will be unraveled and local life revealed. A traditional cyclo tour through the narrow ancient streets of the exotic Old Quarter is also a great

way to soak up the sights and sounds. In the evening board an overnight train to Lao Cai and Sapa near the Chinese border.

Day 3 Sapa Arrive early in the morning and drive the remaining distance to Sapa. Gentle walks to challenging hikes can be arranged depending on fitness levels. With an expert local guide, navigate small paths through terraced valleys of rice and corn fields, passing by ethnic minority hill tribes ploughing their lands with water buffalo.

The ethnic hill tribes are proud of their culture and still maintain their traditions and way of living, including their own language and intricately embroidered, exotic clothing. In the evening you have the option of staying overnight with a local host family in Ta Van village or returning to the comfort of your hotel in Sapa town.

Day 4 Sapa – HanoiToday visit the Red Dao people, stopping at a waterfall along the way. The Red Dao women wear colourful red embroidery and coins sewn on their clothing, with giant red scarves wrapped around their heads. Spend the afternoon at leisure in Sapa before returning to Lao Cai to board the overnight sleeper train back to Hanoi.

Day 5 Hanoi – HaLong BayArrive early into Hanoi and use a day room to shower and freshen up before breakfast. Today you will drive east approximately four hours with your guide to Halong Bay. With more than a thousand limestone peaks rising up from its emerald waters, this area is one of five UNESCO World Heritage sites in Vietnam. Cruise onboard a traditional junk, explore limestone caves, relax on deck, kayak in secluded lagoons and visit local floating fishing villages.

Page 8: Brochure 2010

Mai CHau – an aLTernaTive To Sapa

A less touristy alternative to the more well known Sapa and only a four hour drive from Hanoi, Mai Chau Valley offers hiking and cycling opportunities through picturesque scenery, jungle covered limestone mountains, waterfalls, markets and many quiet ethnic minority villages.

Mai Chau Lodge is a boutique hotel offering the only accommodation of its kind in the region. The lodge originally opened in 2008 with 16 rooms and provides an outdoor swimming pool, indoor Roman style Jacuzzi and sauna. Plans are in place over the coming year to open an additional six plus deluxe stilt houses with superior interior design, overlooking the rice paddy fields.

A giant stalagmite cave also belongs to the Lodge, where barbeques, cocktail parties, dinners and themed dance performances are held.

Amongst other responsible travel initiatives, Mai Chau Lodge employs its staff from the local ethnic hill tribes, providing them with training and future prospects, in turn supporting the many families in the area.

Offering accommodation for every budget, visitors can enjoy Phang Nga Bay’s dramatic and incomparably beautiful karst cathedrals, and use the island as an ideal base from which to explore reefs and marine wildlife, go kayaking, diving or snorkeling. Koh Yao Noi is of equal distance to Phuket and the Krabi mainland, and a couple of hours by land and sea away from Phuket’s International airport. Although the pace of development is accelerating here, the island remains a quiet refuge that feels far removed from the crowds of Phuket.

THe JayavaraMan

The Jayavaraman, launched November 2009 and pictured below, offers a variety of cruise itineraries such as a four day – three night cruise between Saigon and Phnom Penh, to extensive seven night cruises between Saigon and Siem Reap. This four deck opulent boat accommodates up to 65 guests and all cabins feature private balconies. With a hull replica reminiscent of 1930’s cruise liner ‘Normandie’, the boat possesses a French Indochine interior with Khmer artifacts. Tai Chi classes, Vietnamese & Khmer cooking lessons and traditional Aspara dance performances are some of the signature entertainment options onboard the ship.

In addition to the new luxury cruise options on the Mekong, there remains the classic Pandaw cruise. The Pandaw possesses 15 years expertise in river navigation, high service levels, a variety of itineraries ranging from three to seven nights, and great feedback from customers over the years. The ship has a unique atmosphere akin to a charming, colonial boutique hotel that will appeal to the ‘real voyageurs’.

Temperatures can easily reach an average of 29 degrees Celcius, with daytime heat rising to 35 degrees. Nights are also hot and humidity rises. It can again get windy in the afternoons.

The “rainy” season lasts from July-October. However, Hua Hin does not suffer from the monsoon downpours that the North and South get. You can expect temperatures to be at an average of 28 degrees Celcius with the evenings slightly cooler than in the hot season. Kep was once the top beach destination in Cambodia, however now is a quiet, laid back beach town compared to the more touristy beaches of Sihanoukville. It is easy to reach from Phnom Penh (a five to six hour drive from Cambodia’s capital). Kep is scenic in a rugged way, with a short stretch of sand surrounded by mangrove forests and rocky coastal areas.

The best reason to visit Kep is its seafood. The road behind the beach is clogged with seafood vendors selling everything you can imagine. Crab is plentiful offshore and is a local specialty. The freshness and price of the seafood adds up to a delightful gastronomic experience. Tonsay (Rabbit) Island is a few miles from Kep and offers a quiet setting and a couple of white sand beaches perfect for snorkeling.

You can also hike through the jungle of Bokor National Park to the top of Bokor Mountain for views of the sea, passing by a former King’s abandoned villa along the way.

BeST TiMe To go Vietnam’s elongated shape includes tropical and subtropical zones and is responsible for the varied climate in the country. Generally speaking the best time to travel in Vietnam is when there is a reduced chance of rain; that is during April/May and October/November. THe SouTH (Ho CHi MinH CiTy To pHan THieT)The South is hot year round and has two seasons: one wet, the other dry. The wet season lasts from May to October and you can expect daily downpours. These are usually brief and easy to predict. The dry season from November to April is generally sunny and humid.

THe CenTre (nHa Trang To Hue)For most of the year Nha Trang is bathed in beautiful sunshine however between November and December the area has heavy rain. Dalat, at an altitude of 1,500m is cooler than the coastal area, particularly from November through to March. Danang, Hoi An and Hue experience typhoon activity from mid October to mid December when the climate becomes cooler, more overcast and wet.

THe norTH (Hanoi To Sapa)Summer in the north lasts from May to October where temperatures range between 30-35 degrees Celsius with high humidity and bursts of heavy rain. The temperature varies from 10-15 degrees in winter (December to March). February and March can be damp with drizzle and overcast skies.

There are different advantages to travel at different times of the year;the dry season is absolutely fabulous weather, but prices are higher because this is high season. The ‘green’ season (expecta bit of rain on most days), is also a great time to visit Thailand, as it is cooler and guests will enjoy a cost benefit too.

FireBoaT FeSTivaL Marking the end of the Buddhist Lenten period, the “Lai Rua Fai” Festival (‘Fireboat’), is celebrated in Nakorn Phanom in early October. The climax of this dazzling event is on the final night. Dusk on the Mekong and over a dozen unusual vessels with bamboo superstructures lumber into the river. Night falls, camouflaging the platoon of spider-men who light tens of thousands of small lanterns hung to result in a “Portrait in Fire” that can be seen for miles. The local citizenry judge the designs, which vary in shape & form, reflecting indigenous cultural identity and following mythical & Buddhist motifs for “Best Fireboat”. Nakorn Phanom town is off the beaten tack and this festival so be sure to make travel arrangement well in advance.

Loi kraTongTides are highest and the moon brightest on the 1st full moon of the 12th lunar month (but celebrations begin a day before). Millions of Thais congregate near canals & rivers across theKingdom to make wishes and resolutions for the coming twelve months. This is a time after themonsoon rains - the land has been renewed. To pay tribute & thanks to the ‘Mother of the Waters’, Thais fashion a small cup from banana-leaf to hold symbolic items (betel nuts, food, flowers, joss sticks, coins) and a burning candle. With ancient origins in Buddhism, Hinduismand Animism, this important festival is fun and is happening everywhere - from the traditionalcultures along the Mekong to the urban Bangkok scene, where the candles of thousands of‘kratongs’ on a river is a spectacle to behold.

*BUFFALO TOURS TRAVEL BROCHURE 2010 * USEFUL INFORMATION85

Taking place on the 3rd weekend of November, Surin is the home of the Kui tribal people. Hundreds of elephants and thousands of performers come from far and wide to participate in Surin’s Annual Elephant Round Up. The town is thick with elephants and a festival atmosphere prevails, both inside and outside the official venue. This is not a staged event, but reflects the rhythm of life in rural Thai villages and is governed by ancient local traditions. Dates are unlikely to change, but to ensure you have the most updated information, please reconfirm details prior to travel.

Water is the predominant theme during Thai New Year, or “Songkran”, celebrated annually on the 13th of April; a landmark festival time for Thai popular Buddhism, when everyone takes a break and the Kingdom celebrates. On the surface, contemporary Songkran celebrations may seem to consist mainly of drenching-by-bucket or squirt-gun, and getting soaked with water. Prepare for that by putting wallets, cameras, phones etc in plastic bags, and enjoy it if you get soaked! Traditionally, Songkran is a time of symbolic renewal, ‘merit making’, and ritual cleansing, characterized by gentle water splashing, which is less noticeable but more widespread. Travelling at this time guarantees an up-close and personal Songkran experience.
