CAM strategies

2D plunge milling

The 2D curve-based plunge milling cycle allows the effi cient roughing and fi nishing of vertical contours in material that is diffi cult to cut.

Benefi t: Faster machining.

3D shape Z-level fi nishing

The concept of soft bounding is now used in this new cycle. This ensures that the boundaries to adjacent surfaces are calculated more precisely and that sharp outer edges are machined more smoothly. A new function allows curved bottom surfaces to be referenced. As a result, the milling tool fi ts optimally against the boundary edge between the bottom and the wall. Off sets are created for the milling path calculation based on the bottom surface.

Benefi t: Optimised fi nish. Reduced programming and machi-ning times.

3D rest material machining

The open and deep as well as steep and fl at areas of cavities can be machined in one job with collision avoidance. The rest material areas that are recognised during collision avoidance are transferred automatically to the subsequent job where they are then milled using a longer tool or modifi ed inclination. This cycle is particularly suitable for machining deep, narrow areas and slots. It is possible to avoid overrunning sharp outer edges by selecting additional curves.

Benefi t: More user friendly. Easier to use and optimised surface quality.

5axis rework machiningWhen converting from 3axis toolpaths to 5axis toolpaths, all tool types, such as woodruff cutters and the new barrel cutters, can be used. Lateral or radial projections can also be selected in addition to axial projection. The original and new technology data are always available for the conversion of reference data for the new machining tool.

Benefi t: Signifi cantly reduced calculation, programming and machining times.

More transparency, fewer errors: View and check CAM/CAD data prior to production

Until now, only the NC programs and text reports were available to machine operators for setup preparation.

With the new hyperMILL® ShopViewer – the visualisation solution for the workshop – hyperCAD®-S and

hyperMILL® data can be visualised directly next to the machine. Now every manufacturing operation can be

checked in detail on the monitor before the part is setup on the machine.

The clearly structured world of CAM programming has a far better connection to the workshop thanks to

the hyperMILL® ShopViewer. Machine operators with their vast knowledge of manufacturing practices can

autonomously view and simulate CAM/CAD processes. This allows a far better understanding of the actual

manufacturing process than before.

Simple and fast display, analysis

and documentation of CAM/CAD data

NOTE: The hyperMILL® ShopViewer is only available for hyperCAD®-S.

■ Usage area: The hyperMILL® ShopViewer is designed for quick access in the manu-facturing environment after the CAM programming phase.

■ Target group: Machine operators can apply their in-depth manufactu-ring knowledge with the hyperMILL® ShopViewer. Serious mistakes, such as the choice of a wrong tool or unproductive processes, can be avoided.

CAM strategies

Macro and feature technology

hyperMAXX®

hyperMAXX® – the High Performance Cutting module for hyperMILL® – has been extended to include three new powerful functions.

Plunge

hyperMAXX® now allows the tool used for HPC machining to be plunged into the material at pre-drilled holes. hyperMAXX® automatically detects the best position from which to start the machining from the various possible start holes. The entire machining process is collision-checked.

Benefi t: Protects the tool.

Zigzag mode

Zigzag mode can be selected in the menu window. Large work-pieces, in particular, can be machined very effi ciently in this mode as time-consuming redundant movements are eliminated.

Benefi t: Signifi cantly shorter machining times and reduction of unnecessary machine movements.

Selection of conventional machining

Conventional machining can be selected in hyperMILL® 2014.2. This type of machining is necessary when ceramic milling tools are used. This method should also be used when soft materials such as plastics are machined.

Macro database

The macro and rule defi nition function of the macro database has been improved signifi cantly.

Benefi t: Increased user friendliness.

Colour table editor

The colour table editor can be used to assign specifi c machi-ning characteristics to colours. This makes it easier to transfer geometric properties from external data as the assignment of properties can be used in the feature recognition of geometries.

Benefi t: Increased safety thanks to clearly defi ned colours for geometric properties.

HPC toolpaths with hyperMAXX® – maximum results

hyperMAXX® is the High Performance Cutting strategy (HPC) for hyperMILL® . The strategy is based on VoluMill™, a

tried-and-tested and best-in-class HPC technology from Celeritive Technologies, and on highly effi cient special deve-

lopments from OPEN MIND. The result: hyperMAXX® is one of the most extensive and most powerful HPC packages for

generating trochoidal-style toolpaths.

Using this strategy, it is very easy to generate optimally distributed 2D, 3D and 5axis HPC paths. This allows CAM

programmers to always maximise machine performance.

Roland Maschke, CNC programmer at

Werkzeugbau Gebr. Kemmerich GmbH

“Learning to work in hyperMAXX® did not take long. In fact, it took less than an hour. Our tool life has improved by 500 per cent with respect to our components. This is why we believe in doing everything with hyperMAXX®. It‘s the best way forward!”

In a class of its own among CAD systems

Only a high-end CAM developer can do CAD for CAM. With this in mind, Open Mind Technologies AG – known as

an innovative pioneer – developed a new CAD system from scratch that is perfectly matched to hyperMILL®. The

system has its own 3D CAD kernel from OPEN MIND. The result is a unique CAD system for CAM programmers that

is very easy to learn and that vastly accelerates NC programming processes.

hyperCAD®-S fully exploits the performance off ered by contemporary hardware systems to create digital manufac-

turing data. The advanced and extremely powerful 64-bit system is the perfect solution for mastering many of the

daily challenges that arise when working with meshes, faces and solids to create precise components and tools.

Large volumes of imported data can be prepared for subsequent NC programming easily, quickly and safely and

completely independently from the original CAD system. hyperCAD®-S is pure ‘CAD for CAM’.

CAD-Integration: hyperCAD®-S

Smart selector technology

New and improved selection options for faces and curves. ■ Optimised chain selection■ Faces with limits: Selects a face area that is limited by

selected faces. ■ Tangential faces: Selected tangential faces are highlighted.■ Coplanar faces: Selects all coplanar faces within a linear or

angular tolerance from a reference face.■ Coaxial faces: Selects all faces with the same coaxial axis.■ Fillet faces: Selects all fi llets within a defi nable area.■ Chamfer faces: Selects all chamfers within a defi nable area.

Benefi t: Time saving. Increased user friendliness. Fewer clicks.

Clipping plane

The Clipping plane function is used to generate a planar section through a component. The selected clipping plane remains active within other functions but does not aff ect the existing geometry of the component.

Benefi t: Increased user friendliness. Better analysis and machi-ning of components.

Better performance

Thanks to multi-threading, the calculation of the tessellation is optimally distributed to all available processors which results in signifi cantly reduced model loading times.

Benefi t: Time saving. Models are available for machining more quickly.

Solids – efficient solid modelling

hyperCAD®-S Solids – the module for solid modelling – was, of course, also developed primarily for CAM

programmers. In contrast to engineers and designers, this group requires features without a history during

solid modelling. Why make it complicated if doing it directly is quicker? With the innovative approach to

direct modelling off ered by hyperCAD®-S Solids, solid modelling becomes a real joy: After the faces or

features of a solid model have been selected, the position and shape of the faces of the solid model can

be modifi ed in real time simply by dragging handles and manipulators. And the best thing is that direct mo-

delling does not only work with native data but also with external data that have been imported and have

no feature history information.

The hyperCAD®-S Solids module allows all solid models to be reliably imported, created, converted,

modifi ed and combined. Working with solid models becomes noticeably easier and much more intuitive:

Chamfers, fi llets and holes can be directly moved, reduced, enlarged or deleted by means of recognised

features. The use of existing features and associated functionalities allows CAM programmers who work

with faces and solids to be more productive and fl exible.

■ Reliable import of external data: When external data are im-ported, they are handled in the same way as native CAD data. All construction data, such as sketches, faces, single parts or complete machining groups, are transferred and can be modi-fi ed, if required.

■ Numerous standard features: Basic structures, linear extrusions, rotational solids, linear and rotation slots, pockets, simple and complex holes, patterns, chamfers and fi llets can be created.

■ Time-saving zone feature: The zone feature also allows creating user-specifi c features. Zones can be transfor-med, copied, deleted or also selected with hyperMILL®.

■ Creating solid models from faces: All it takes is a few clicks to create solid models quickly from closed face formations – and vice versa.

■ Working conveniently with features: Features that have been created have no history and are not arranged in any particular way. They are stored in the model tree for easy selection. The faces of features can be moved using drag-and-drop operations, in order, for example, to reposition holes. After direct modelling, the shape is recalculated automatically by the system. A wide range of functions are available for machining the features: Delete, mir-ror, arrange as pattern, off set, move, scale and break.

■ Reliable feature recognition: Double-clicking an imported face starts the feature recognition. Fillets and chamfers that are recognised are created automatically as features whose dimensions can then be modifi ed again with a smart click.

■ All Boolean operations: Union, Diff erence, Intersection and Split are supported..
