Why Checkpoint Examinations?

According to CIE, and I quote in part, Checkpoint tests have been designed to assess

learners at the end of Cambridge Secondary 1. They are available in English, English as a

Compare the performance of all learners taking tests in that session

Manage learning programmes within schools and as learners move between schools.

The test feedback measures a learner’s performance in relation to:

A list of the questions (and the sub-topics/skills) where the candidate’s performance

YEAR 10 END OF YEAR EXAMINATIONS

As the term comes to an end, so is the Academic year. Year 10 students have

been doing their End of Year Examinations. This prepares them for Year 11

which is the Candidate Class where they will be seating for their IGCSE exami-

nations. Their preparation for the End of Year Examinations was beefed up by

being given Revision Booklets with past papers in order to help them prepare

better. We look forward to seeing their performance improve as compared to

previous performance.

Careers’ Evening

The Nairobi Academy Careers’ evening took place on Wednesday, 28th June, 2017 in the School Hall. The

objective of the evening was to engage both parents and students in discussions about career choices,

expectations and the way forward. The attendance was overwhelming. The event that was to end at

7.00pm extended to 8.00pm. We wish to thank the parents who took their time to consult with our students

and give them tips on the prospects in their respective professions. Mr. Ndonye (Law), Mrs Nduati (Law),

Mrs. Kiambuthi (Medicine) Mr. Machoka (ICT) as well as all the other professionals from different fields in

Architecture, Aviation, Engineering, and Marketing who were part of the representatives from educational

institutions such as ACCA, University of Northampton, Bristol, and Canada. The evening turned out to be

very informative and educative to all who attended. Career’s Department

My take on Careers’ Evening

I was very excited to talk to leading professionals

on what they expect from me as a student. Since

I am in A‘ Level, this evening proved to be ex-

tremely insightful and eye-opening. In addition to

popular courses preferred by students such as

Law, Medicine and Architecture, there were also

experts from other fields such as Aviation and Hos-

pitality who made realize the variety that educa-

tion has to offer. I look forward to more evenings

like this. Kiaran Saimbi

The Social Sciences Academic Day

The Social Sciences Department successfully held its maiden Social Sciences Academic Day on 29th June

2017 in the School Hall. The event was characterised by colourful and educative photos on various themes

mounted on display boards and a myriad of presentations from students such as poems, a skit and songs.

We also had guest speakers from the Meteorological Department who enlightened students on the role

they play in the enhancing social economic development in the country. Ms Weber, an alumnus of Nairo-

bi Academy, gave an inspiring yet challenging talk on the tourism industry in the country. She highlighted

the opportunities and pitfalls of tourism in Kenya as well as the innovations being pursued internationally to

give it a global leverage.

Unique and catchy entertainment was provided by the Slum Drummers who also demonstrated how items

considered to be waste can be profitably reused. Other than providing an immense learning opportunity,

the event offered a superb platform for learners to display their skills and talents as they prepare to venture

out and transform the world. The Day was inspired by the words of Mahatma Ganthi: “The world has

enough for everyone's need, but not enough for everyone's greed.”

As the term comes to a close, the external fixtures came to an end last week with a number of matches

on the card the U13 Netball team hosted NIS and Gems School while the U13 Football played the same

teams winning the games 2-1 and 4-0 respectively. The Under 15 netball and Rugby teams held training

matches with Brookhouse before traveling to St. Andrews Turi. The Netball team played well and they

were 4th in the plate while the Under 15 Boys Rugby won the Plate trophy.

Invitation to this year’s Speech Day

Year 7 Induction Day

The Year 7 students were hosted by the Secondary School fraternity on Tuesday, 27th

June 2017 for a whole day at the Secondary School. It was refreshing to receive this

group; cheerful pupils, all smiles, and eager to have a taste of a day in their upcoming

lives as secondary school students. The day begun at 8.30 am with a briefing and laying

out of the schedule for the day.

The students then proceeded to experience a total of twelve 45 minute to 1 hour lessons

in two groups. They began with Drama and History lessons, and went on to experience a

rich menu of learning interactions in mathematics, ICT, science, geography, literature

and sport, amongst other activities.

Scholarship tests

It is a long standing tradition at The Nairobi Academy to award deserving students Edu-

cation Scholarships at each Key Stage. On Friday, 23rd June 2017, the Year 7 students sat

their Nairobi Academy Scholarship Tests at the secondary school. Though a little nervous

at the beginning, once they had settled into the first examination, it was then smooth all

the way.

Their results were delivered on Monday, and will be analyzed subject to other pertinent

considerations such as the student’s participation in co-curricular activities as well as

contribution to the school community. Interviews were carried out on Wednesday, 28th

June 2017for students who had passed the first stage. The winners of the envied scholar-

ships will then get to know of the outcome at the Prize giving day at the end of this term.

A similar, yet slightly modified exercise was carried out at the end of this week with the

Year 9 applicants for the IGCSE Scholarship.

We wish all the candidates the best of luck.
