SynopsisThe idea of dentine bonding dates back to the early sixties. It almost simultaneously emerged with enamel adhesion. However, the development of dentin adhesives took slightly more time than that of enamel adhesives. This is the reason why clinically efficient dentin adhesives only became available to the clinicians in the late eighties. It might be astonishing for those who have not been long enough in the business to learn that since then, little has changed. The presentation will focus on this strange situation by providing some interesting background information.

SynopsisThe guidelines of modern restorative dentistry are adhesion and minimum invasiveness. Composite materials are now leading on the market as a permanent and universal restoration solution: there is no treatment planning which does not include the use of composite materials as for sealing, anterior or posterior restoration. The perfect knowledge of the advantages and limits of these materials is fundamental for all dentists: a superficial approach to the use of composites may lead to failure and very long chair-work times. To know composite materials, nowadays more than ever, means to understand their practical application, to choose the ideal material on the market under the mechanical and aesthetic point of view, to understand when to choose indirect rather than direct technique, to evaluate the use of composites not only in the conservative field, but also in the prosthetic one, both for provisional and permanent solutions. All in all, it means to properly plan the patient’s treatment, focusing on the quality of its final result and the working time to reach it. With these clear indications in mind, the dilemma of whether to use composites or ceramics is no longer an antagonistic choice but rather the two materials represent integrable solutions, a choice which can be used in harmony, even in the same mouth. Therefore, clinicians now have the possibility of optimising to the maximum the advantages which these materials bring to the profession.

SynopsisAll-ceramic restorations have dramatically changed the face of dentistry in the last decades and have steadily improved. With the introduction of the first veneers by Charles L. Pincus, bonding was limited to a denture adhesive. At the time of the introduction of alumina reinforced porcelain jacket crowns by John W. McLean, all-ceramic restorations were considered to be invasive and bridgework as not applicable. Permanent improvements in adhesive dentistry and the development of new types of all-ceramics like lithium disilicate (LS2) and zirconia ceramic in standardized manufacturing processes, enabled a higher degree of reliability and the access to fixed dental prostheses. Encompassing a vast array of innovative materials and material combinations, today’s CAD/CAM based all-ceramics are suitable for an increasing range of indications and thereby will influence future treatment concepts to be more efficient and predictable. The lecture will provide on the one hand a retrospective on all-ceramic restorations and their success rates related to previous protocols. On the other hand, new techniques like CAD/CAM veneering options and monolithic restorations will be evaluated by first experiences in clinical studies.

SynopsisExciting advancements and constant developments in aesthetic restorative dentistry, adhesion, implantology, all-ceramic materials, and CAD/CAM technology provide the restorative dentist with an array of wonderful tools to meet the challenges of this era of dentistry.

Ceramic materials have become integral parts of aesthetically driven restorative treatment concepts that include procedures ranging from conservative veneers to full-mouth rehabilitations.High-strength ceramic materials and CAD/CAM technologies are progressively applied for tooth and implant-supported restorations. The physical properties of modern ceramic materials are significantly different from traditionally applied metal-alloys and, therefore, require significantlydifferent handling and design. The recent evolution in CAD/CAM technology and ceramic materials, paired with the development of new adhesive bonding materials have vastly shifted traditional treatment paradigms and offer a whole new range of treatment options that are not only more aesthetic and less invasive, but also long-term functional.

Crucial aspects for successful integration of these materials and technologies are case selection and treatment planning as well as laboratory and clinical handling (i.e., preparation, cementation, and resin bonding) that recognize their indications and limitations based on the current scientific evidence.

This program will provide an update on dental aesthetics, ceramics, adhesion, and CAD/CAM technology and discusses guidelines for long-term success with tooth- and implantsupported ceramic restorations.

Learning objectives• Implement fundamental aesthetic guidelines

• Differentiate modern ceramic materials and their indications

• Learn about CAD/CAM technology and its diverse applications

• Understand strategies for success with ceramic restorations

• Comprehend adhesive dentistry in combination with indirect restorations

• Understand guidelines for successful and long-lasting aesthetic restorations from laminate veneers to full-mouth implant-supported rehabilitation

SynopsisThe history of Guide Bone Regeneration can be divided in 3 main periods: the Developing Period, the Consolidation Period and the Simplification Period. The Development Period began in 1989 with famous study in rabbits from Dr. Dahlin and continued until 1996 when the final surgical technique has been well defined. During the Consolidation Period the results were confirmed with retrospective and prospective clinical studies. From 2005, with the beginning of the Simplification Period, Tissue Engineering techniques are used in order to reduce the complexity of the regenerative surgery and the morbidity for the patient. The use of growth factors could in a near future eliminate the need of the barrier membrane and of the autogenous bone harvesting from the patient, resulting in easier and less invasive surgical techniques.

Biographical sketchProf Massimo Simion - Degree of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Milan in 1979.Specialization in Odontostomatology and Dental Prosthodontics at the University of Milan in 1982. SynopsisThrough innovation, along with continuous clinical and scientific research, it has become possible to treat virtually every edentulous case with a highly functional and aesthetic fixed solution, increasing the patients’ quality of life. The MALO CLINIC protocol for totally edentulous rehabilitation has allowed thousands of clinicians worldwide to achieve this essential goal for their patients.

The oral rehabilitation of fully edentulous patients has two stages: surgical and prosthetic. The surgical stage follows the All-on-4® surgical protocol - an innovative technique developed in the early 90’s at MALO CLINIC that allows for immediate function, full-arch, implant supported prosthetics. Based on this concept, which also underwent continuous development from standard to extra-maxillary approaches, it was possible to solve clinical situations that would otherwise need more complex or expensive procedures.

The final prosthodontic work was developed to give a high aesthetic, precise and consistent result, following a simple clinical and technical procedure combined with CAD\CAM technology.

The MALO CLINIC surgical and prosthetic rehabilitation protocols for the totally edentulous have proven to be clinically effective in the short, medium and long-term outcomes, being also a standardized treatment procedure that can adapt to further simplifications, such as flapless surgery, based on computer planning. The final prosthesis - the MALO CLINIC Bridge - presents as one of today’s highest aesthetic alternatives that is also both hygienic and easy to maintain.

Biographical sketchDr Paulo Malo, President of the MALO CLINIC Health & Wellness graduated in 1989 from the Faculty of Dental Medicine, University of Lisbon, and founded MALO CLINIC in 1995. The large success and exponential growth of his clinic has prompted an extensive international expansion and the birth of an International Health Group, present in five Continents.

Developed by Paulo Malo the MALO CLINIC Protocol (surgical techniques and innovative products such as the All-on-4®, the new zygomatic implant, the Extra-Maxilla surgery, the NobelSpeedy® implant and the advanced technical solution MALO CLINIC Bridge) has revolutionized Oral Surgery, mainly in the scope of Implantology and Fixed Oral Rehabilitation. With a PhD in Oral Biology, Paulo Malo is a co-author of several books and has published several scientific articles, as well as a frequent guest speaker at about 150 international conferences on Health related issues or Management per year.

Aside from his clinical practice and corporate management, he is a visiting professor in several prestigious Universities, as well as leading consultant in four major dental medicine international companies. Throughout his career he has also received several distinctions and awards, either for his medical breakthroughs, or for his managing, leadership and entrepreneurial skills.

Prof Dr Giulio Rasperini (IT) Saturday 30th January

SynopsisIn the last few years new concepts in non-surgical periodontal therapy has allowed the clinician to reduce the amount of invasive surgical treatment and the number of teeth extracted to achieve oral health.

The biggest challenge today in periodontology is the aesthetic demand from our patients. Besides functional results, it is important to achieve aesthetic success, particularly in the anterior region, where the expectations of our patients is highest.

The introduction of new biological concepts, different surgical techniques, biomaterials and growth factors during the last twenty years has improved our ability to satisfy the patients demands and change the prognosis of compromised teeth with predictable long term results.

Decision making with regards to different clinical situations, based on the evidence, will be discussed during the presentation and new procedures will be shown in detail and clarified with the use of several clinical videos.

SynopsisThe goal to create a harmonious “aesthetic” outcome around dental implants that mimics the surrounding dentition and soft-tissue condition as well as morphology is indeed difficult to create and maintain long term. The subepithelial connective tissue graft (CTG) is a favored option to treat and prevent gingival and peri-implant soft-tissue recessions. It is usually placed in combination with a coronally advanced flap or with an envelope flap or pouch. This lecture will focus on the difference on protocols when it comes to surgical and prosthetic criteria to treat anterior implants using as a volume maintainer only soft tissue grafting procedures. Techniques and tools will be discussed in order to reach such results around anterior implant treatments.

SynopsisPlanning for aesthetic predictability and success while managing an aesthetic failure in the anterior zone represents a great challenge for the dental team. The aesthetic outcome and natural appearance of the tooth and implant restoration depends ultimately on the execution and understanding of the team participating in the different treatment phases. The goal to create a harmonious “esthetic” outcome around dental implants and teeth that mimics the surrounding dentition and soft-tissue condition as well as morphology is indeed difficult to create and maintain long term. The presentation focuses on the past and present learned different clinical criteria, sequencing/timing and current surgical-prosthetic techniques for maximizing optimal aesthetics in conjunction with orthodontics a critical element for achieving gingival integration and aesthetic success involving complex implant and natural teeth failures.
