R&S started in 1991 in Tanzania with a group of 12 students who were concerned about their environment. Now it has 150.000 members in 130 countries. It is the youth-led community ac-tion and learning program of the Jane Goodall Institute. The program builds on the legacy and vision of Dr. Jane Goodall to place the power and responsibility for creating community-based people. Through the program, young people map their com-munity to identify specific challenges their neighbourhoods face. The project can involve human community as well as animal community or the environment. From there, they prioritize the problems, develop a plan for a solution, and take action all while developing the skills and attitudes to

become part of the next generation of Dr. Jane Goodalls. Britannica International School is going to join Roots and Shoots from the next school year. Why? The answer is simple. We would like to become part of an inter-

national community of youth that want to make a difference. We want to meet people in our community that care about the same thing we do therefore on the 24th of May, Year 7 and 8 students visited AISB to attend a presentation by Dr. Jane Goodall about her life and work with chimpanzees and about the Roots and Shoots program she launched in 1991. Students were also given the opportunity to spend 10 minutes with her privately and ask questions about her work. In the break time, we went to see grade 7-9 students’ Roots and Shoots projects mainly focusing on environ-mental and animal issues. We were inspired by her life

and achievements and the passion she is trying to motivate young people to have the courage to make a difference.

I would like to finish this article with one

of her famous quotes: Only if we under-stand, will we care. Only if we care, will we help. Only if we help shall all be saved

Hungarian Storytelling

Weeks

Dear Parents,

This year again the Hungarian Department is organizing Storytelling

Weeks in Primary between 6th and 17th June.

We kindly invite parents, grandparents or any

adults interested to come and share a story with the children in the Hungarian les-

sons. It can be a tale, a personal story, an excerpt from a favourite novel or something about Hun-garian history, anything that would be interesting for the pupils. Last year we had parents and visi-tors coming to each year group with a wide range of stories, which was a great experience for the children. If you are interested in this program, please let us

know and sign up for one of the Hungarian les-

sons in your child’s year group. Should you need

any help or ideas on what to bring, we are happy

to help. Teachers can also plan some follow-up

activities related to your story.

Please come and share your story with us!

Ms Barták, Ms Dinnyés and Ms Zita Hungarian Department
