Welcome to our first issue of Brisbane Weekly, the online mag to celebrate Brisbane as a whole… The place everyone wants to live, but at times, forgets to discover. It’s easy to stay on ‘our’ side of the river, and refuse to venture over the bridge but by doing so, we are missing out on ALL of what this great city has to offer.

So here is our challenge… We want to find the hidden, the yum and the awesome places out their in suburbia. Where the owners are the ones making coffee, or bringing you clothes to the change room. Where people come together to celebrate and own our days in the sunshine state.

Get involved in something cas(ual), something free and something simple! Brisbane Weekly is for the true Brisbanites… the ones always searching of somewhere to fall in love with… somewhere or something worth talking about…

Enjoy the simple things, they are closer than you think,

Coorparoo is at the heart of several suburbs that have been booming and continue to do so. Surrounded by suburbs including Kangaroo Point, Woolloongabba, East Bris-bane, Stones Corner, Greenslopes, Holland Park, Norman Park, and Carina, Coorparoo is just four kilo-metres from the city.

Coorparoo has numerous cafes, restaurants, boutiques and clubs

within easy reach and the Museum and Performing Arts Centre and the parklands of Southbank are close by in South Brisbane.

With easy train and bus access, Coorparoo is also placed nicely for easy freeway access to both the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

Coorparoo has for a while now been included in the hotspots for

real estate, with all of the positives this suburb has, there are very few negatives, if any.

Rent can be high, but I think bal-anced well with the easy acces-sibility of transport. This suburb has many hidden treasures and some amazing food, in places you would never have thought to look!

hair + beauty

There’s a new kid on the makeup block. She’s ahead of the latest trends, is luxurious, does her job well and best of all she’s affordable. Her name is Erin Bigg Cosmetics.

The brainchild of Brisbane based Makeup Artist Erin Bigg, the stunning range was released to the public in February of this year. Since then it has gone from strength to strength.

As both a Makeup artist and a consumer (a high volume one at that) two standout products for me are the Invisible Blotting Powder, $44 (1) and the Blonde Brow Blender Pencil, $30 (2).

The mattifying powder pressed onto the skin either before or after your foundation absorbs excess oil with the power of a national cleanup.

The pencil glides on like gel and has a little mascara wand at the end to blend your colouring. Even this Platinum blonde suits this brow pencil. Find your Erin Bigg Cosmetics favourite.

HAIRbefore & after

Hairdresser: Kate from aesthetica @ Coorparoo

BEFORE

AFTER

I went in with ridiculous regrowth, and a buildup of what has been a few years of blonding abuse.Kate listened to what I had to say, explained to me what she thought she could do to help me get where I wanted to go with my hair, and in terms I completely understood.

I never once doubted her in the process, and this is the first time I have had my hair done at

aesthetica. I had been there for eyebrows and massages previously and always thought, I should come for a makeover.

Super happy with the finished product! Loved the experience and highly recommended, especially for colour correction!

As the minimum spend for free parking at Westfield shopping

centres increased to $200 on the 1st of May, shopping locally became more appealing yet again.

Boutique shopping offers variety and individuality like nothing else. Boutiques don’t hold as much stock as chain

stores. That can be frustrating, but it also means that you’ll avoid the awkward moment when the woman at the next table has the same top on as you. And if you ask nicely enough, the staff can often get an item brought over from another store – rather than telling you that you’ll need to get to another shopping centre before closing time

because they can’t hold it for more than two hours.

It’s more than likely you’ll discover your next favourite label or café in this way as well. Chance encounters with a particularly well-fitting item or an emergency coffee stop can yield a decades-long love affair. If nothing else,

shopping in your area certainly beats trawling chain store racks only to find replicas of what every other store is offering.

Local stores also have fewer staff and so are able to offer consistently better customer service than their branded competitors. This means that if you pop

in every now and again, you’re likely to encounter old friends who know your style and can point you in the right direction.

Supporting local business could also lead to the next suburban shopping hot spot in your area. Spend, and they will come.

If you aren’t convinced yet, you’ll get more Vitamin D and fresh air on the street than in a shopping centre, and there are no tempting Donut Kings between stores. All of that, and the parking is probably free, too.

Why you don’t need Westfield

Ever been to breakfast on the weekend and every other man

and his dog is there too? It seems as though every single cafe and restaurant is full to the brim with trendy families, hipsters and new lovers on the weekends and so often we are heard asking the golden question “Why does everyone go to breakfast??”. So I am going to break it down and give you some of the best reasons we choose to go out rather than stay in on a Sunday morning…

Poached eggs. No one can possibly poach eggs better than a chef, even your best efforts will never compare to a professionally poached egg and no little gimmick you purchased from Robins Kitchen does the same job. When an egg is poached well then there is no need for anything else on the plate other than some toast and cracked pepper. Perfect for those who don’t want to clog their arteries with the grease that usually comes with a “big breakfast”.

Coffee. I have worked as a waitress and loved making coffee, so much so that if I was on the coffee machine on a weekend morning shift, I had a great

old time getting covered in milk, coffee and chocolate making 20,000 coffees. People LOVE their coffee. And no schmancy Nespresso machine on your kitchen bench will ever replace a freshly made coffee, the perfect start to your morning.

Hollandaise sauce. Need I say more? Whoever invented this deliciousness should be knighted for their efforts! I will order something on the menu that does not come with hollandaise only to order a side of it just because I know everything tastes just that little bit more amazing with hollandaise. Except muesli. And to be honest, if you are going out to breakfast only to order muesli…you must be a cyclist or something.

The journey to find your perfect cafe is like finding the perfect man, you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince. It is hard to find a cafe that completely gets what you want from a breakfast and provides it to a T, so when you do find one that does, it is true love. You may be tempted to taste the fruits of another, the rush is there but it always ends in disappointment and a feeling of wasted efforts. You should have just stuck with old faithful.

And the best reason to go for breakfast? Who wants to wake up on their day off and spend an hour slaving in the kitchen, to sit down and enjoy it, only to remember…now you have to clean up all that mess you just made.

Toodles x

It’s a breakfast thing
