What is BYOD?• BYOD stands for

Bring Your Own Device

• Students and staff are welcome to bring their personal devices such as laptops, tablets, smart phones, etc. for instructional use at school

•Increase students access to learning experiences and instruction designed around discovery, connectivity and exploration

•Enhance learning, personal productivity, and collaboration

•Comfort with use of personal devices

Why BYOD?

• Every student will have a HCPSS email account

• Increased access to technology

Benefits

Instructional Uses• Personal devices are ideal for

reading, accessing digital resources, completing homework, producing presentations, research and appropriate educational apps/games.

• Note: Content Filtering will still be in place for all personal devices via the HCPSS network.

• Ensuring that there is a specific learning outcome when instructing students to use their personal device.

• Participating in ongoing professional development including web based modules and site based face to face sessions.

• Presenting best practices and artifacts at the April 24, 2014 county wide professional learning day.

• Monitoring the implementation of BYOD policies and procedures.

• Sharing and documenting use of devices for instruction via Edmodo.

• Collaborating with teachers within their pilot school and other pilot schools.

• Provide alternate “low tech” activity options or secure access to HCPSS technology when an assignment requires the use of technology

• Participating in evaluation process (completing survey in August and May) and focus groups.

Participating Teacher Expectations

As a BYOD school, Staff are not expected to...

•Support, repair, or troubleshoot devices

•Store or watch devices for students

•Require students to download or use particular apps

•In addition to the Responsible Use Form, students and parents will sign “Use of Personal Device agreement.”

•Students/parents are solely responsible for the maintenance, security, upkeep and repair of their personal device

Student/Parent Expectations

• Complete technology comfort and use survey

• Information will be shared with parents at Back to School Night

• Documentation on guidelines and best practices will be provided

• Indicate your interest in participating in the pilot
