In 2008, Brill celebrates its 325th anniversary. Studies in Medieval and Reformation TraditionsEdited by Andrew Colin Gow, University of Alberta

Studies in Medieval and Reformation Traditions is a peer-reviewed book series that provides a forum for monographs and text editions on subjects pertaining to the watershed between the Middle Ages and the Reformation. There is a wealth of subject matter to be found in the correlation and mutual interpretation of all three areas of specialization—Medieval, Reformation, and Renaissance Studies. In encouraging the pursuit of the social history of ideas, SMRT pays equal attention to political, cultural and religious history.

‘There were some who worried that Brill’s Studies in Medieval and Reformation Traditions might languish once separated from the guiding hand of Heiko Oberman. One need not worry.’ David M. Whitford, Renaissance Quarterly.

The Serpent and the RoseThe Immaculate Conception and Hispanic Poetry in the Late Medieval Period

Lesley K. Twomey, Northumbria University

• June 2008• ISBN 978 90 04 16595 3• Hardback (304 pp.)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 129.-• Studies in Medieval and Reformation Traditions, 132

The Serpent and the Rose examines the theological and liturgical context for the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception in the Middle Ages, from primary sources in Iberian archives. Its main focus is a study of Marian poetry from Alfonso the Wise and Gonzalo de Berceo through to the poetry collections of the late fifteenth century, showing how poets took themes from the Bible and apocryphal literature, combining them to defend and praise Mary’s conception without sin. Individual chapters assess how they depicted Mary’s prefiguration in the Old Testament by the Woman who defeated the serpent, the young bride of the Song of Songs, or the semi-deity, Wisdom, how they portray her as the mystic rose and as the new Eve.

Witchcraft and the Act of 1604Edited by John Newton and Jo Bath

• April 2008• ISBN 978 90 04 16528 1• Hardback (xii. 248 pp.)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 129.-• Studies in Medieval and Reformation Traditions, 131

The essays in this volume examine the relationship of the Jacobean Witchcraft Act to the culture and society of seventeenth-century England. The book explores the potential influence of King James’ works and person on the framing of the Act, including the relationship of Shakespeare’s MacBeth to these events, as well as the impact of the Darrell controversy on the shaping of witchcraft beliefs before the Act. It also assesses the impact of the legislation on society in various parts of the country, as well as examining how drama reflected the ideas found in the legislation. The volume concludes with a look at the reasons for its repeal in 1736. This work provides new interpretations of the influence and application of the 1604 Witchcraft Act by some of the world’s leading scholars of witchcraft.

Women, Gender and Radical Religion in Early Modern Europe

Edited by Sylvia Brown, University of Alberta

• November 2007• ISBN 978 90 04 16306 5• Hardback (xiv, 330 pp.)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 129.-• Studies in Medieval and Reformation Traditions, 129

This collection of twelve new essays explores the role of women and gender in a broad range of ‘radical’ religious movements of the post-Reformation. Organized into three themed divisions, the first examines the activism of female Quakers in their public performances as preachers and petitioners, in their global travels, and in their domestic lives. The second examines early modern prophetesses and their radical revisions of scripture, gender, body, and voice; and the third concerns women who, in diverse ways, crossed boundaries, including the confessional boundaries of Europe. A strength of this volume is its comparative re-examination of the term ‘radical’. German Anabaptists are discussed alongside unorthodox nuns with the aim of understanding how gender factors into innovative and oppositional religion.

Justification and Participation in ChristThe Development of the Lutheran Doctrine of Justification from Luther to the Formula of Concord (1580)

Olli-Pekka Vainio, University of Helsinki

• February 2008• ISBN 978 90 04 16526 7• Hardback (xii, 260 pp.)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 129.-• Studies in Medieval and Reformation Traditions, 130

The unity of the early Lutheran reformation, even in the central themes such as justification, is still an open question. This study examines the development of the doctrine of justification in the works of the prominent first and second generation Lutheran reformers, from the viewpoints of divine participation and effectiveness of justification. Generally, Luther’s idea of Christ’s real presence in the believer as the central part of justification is maintained and taught by all Reformers, while they simultaneously develop various theological frameworks to depict the nature of participation. However, in some cases these developed models are contradictory, causing tension between theologians resulting in the invention of new doctrinal formulations.

White Magic, Black Magic in the European RenaissanceFrom Ficino, Pico, Della Porta to Trithemius, Agrippa, Bruno

Paola Zambelli

• July 2007• ISBN 978 90 04 16098 9• Hardback (x, 282 pp.)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 129.-• Studies in Medieval and Reformation Traditions, 125

This book explores philosophical theories, which in the Renaissance provided an interpretation of nature, of its laws and exceptions and of man’s capacity to dominate the cosmos by way of natural magic or by magical ceremonies. It does not concentrate on the Hermetic and Neoplatonic philosophers (Ficino, Pico, Della Porta), nor on the relationship between magic and the scientific revolution, but rather upon the interference of the ideas and practices of learned magicians with popular rites and also with witchcraft, a most important question for social and religious history. New definitions of magic put forward by certain unorthodox and “wandering scholastics” (Trithemius, Agrippa, Paracelsus, Bruno) will interest readers of Renaissance and Reformation texts and history.

Witchcraft, Gender and Society in Early Modern Germany

Jonathan B. Durrant, University of Glamorgan

• July 2007• ISBN 978 90 04 16093 4• Hardback (xxviii, 288 pp.)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 129.-• Studies in Medieval and Reformation Traditions, 124

Recent witchcraft historiography, particularly where it concerns the gender of the witch-suspect, has been dominated by theories of social conflict in which ordinary people colluded in the persecution of the witch sect. The reconstruction of the Eichstätt persecutions (1590-1631) in this book shows that many witchcraft episodes were imposed exclusively ‘from above’ as part of a programme of Catholic reform. The high proportion of female suspects in these cases resulted from the persecutors’ demonology and their interrogation procedures. The confession narratives forced from the suspects reveal a socially integrated, if gendered, community rather than one in crisis. The book is a reminder that an overemphasis on one interpretation cannot adequately account for the many contexts in which witchcraft episodes occurred.

In the past years ideological elements that guaranteed cohesion and loyalties in early modern societies have become a key interest of scholarship. Revolving around the notion of amor patriae (love of country), this study shows how this classical idea, with its civic humanist connotations, was transferred into the context of monarchical theory of the (German) Empire. The book further explores how love of country fitted into European debates on the nature of commonwealth and the citizen’s duties. Combined with an analysis of humanist images of the German fatherland and nation, this concept’s application is examined in the German pamphlet literature from the conflicts of the late 16th century to the end of the Thirty Years’ War. The result is a refreshing portrait of the confessional era in Germany, which is often simply characterized by sectarian and political divide.

The Seven Deadly SinsFrom Communities to Individuals

Edited by Richard Newhauser, Trinity University, San Antonio

• March 2007• ISBN 978 90 04 15785 9• Hardback (xii, 312 pp.)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 129.-• Studies in Medieval and Reformation Traditions, 123

This volume presents a selection of essays undertaken by participants in an NEH Summer Seminar in 2004 on the topic of the seven deadly sins, viewed individually and as a whole, as part of the Begriffsgeschichte of the Middle Ages and beyond in which concepts are constructed within the cultural milieus in which they function. The early essays study the political and social ethics of medieval communities. In the second part, the institutional imperatives within the Church, of formulating and teaching about the capital vices, are the focus of research. In the final section, the contributions deal with ways in which secular artists and authors (in particular, Dante) contribute to the cultural construction of the vices.

Gemeindeordnung und KirchenzuchtJohannes a Lascos Kirchenordnung für London (1555) und die reformierte Konfessionsbildung

Judith Becker, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg

• June 2007• ISBN 978 90 04 15784 2• Hardback (xvi, 592 pp.)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 129.-• Studies in Medieval and Reformation Traditions, 122

This study describes the origins of early Reformed confessional development, using the example of those congregations of religious refugees most heavily influenced by John Laski: the congregation at Emden and the Dutch and French Strangers’ Churches in London. At its center are questions about the congregation as the location of ecclesiology. The outlines of Laski’s theology--which viewed the congregation as the communion of the body of Christ--are described in comparison to the approaches of other Reformers and in relationship to daily reality in the second half of the sixteenth century. Working from a rich base of source materials, the author discusses the development of teachings on church offices and the practice of church discipline, thus illuminating the self-understanding of the three congregations. Becker shows how reciprocal influences and attempts to conform led to the unification of doctrine and community life within these congregations.

Studies in the History of Christian TraditionsEdited by Robert J. Bast, University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Studies in the History of Christian Traditions is a peer-reviewed book series intended to encourage the study of continuities and discontinuities in the history of Christian Thought through monographs dealing with single authors, movements and ideas. In view of the urgent necessity to transcend confessional and language barriers, the series is dedicated to this subject-matter

as the common focus for the research of scholars of various religious and national backgrounds. The individual volumes are in English or German.

The founding of the Catholic missions in Australia coincided with the defining drift of power and prestige within the nineteenth-century Church. This was a period of chronic dissension among Australia’s Catholic communities, powerfully drawn by the ultramontane impulse and political maneuvering to refer their problems to the Pope. Roman bureaucratic control, exercised through the Sacred Congregation de Propaganda Fide, was the single most important factor in the resolution of these problems and, consequently, in the determinative shaping of the colonial Australian Church. Based on extensive archival research, this study explores issues of process, politics and personality in the formulation of papal policy towards a part of the world that could not be more distant from Rome.

John Wyclif ’s Discourse on Dominion in Community

John Wyclif ’s modern critics have found little in his works that justified his fame by the standards of intellectual history. This book reconstructs Wyclif ’s discourse on the theological and political consequences of his radically new insight into the integrity of man and nature as regards the good, free and beautiful life, communicated to his contemporary scholastic and lay audience. His theological, legal and political vision of restoring original justice through the spiritual reality and sanctity of persona humana in every man, as well as in the community, by the law of love and the use and enjoyment of dominion in community, is conveyed through abundant quotes from his works.

Orientalism, Aramaic and Kabbalah in the Catholic ReformationThe First Printing of the Syriac New Testament

Robert J. Wilkinson

• October 2007• ISBN 978 90 04 16250 1• Hardback (xvi, 224 pp.)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 129.-• Studies in the History of Christian Traditions, 137

Focusing upon the extraordinary circumstances of the production of the editio princeps of the Syriac New Testament in 1555 and establishing a reliable history of that edition, this book offers an new account of the origin of Syriac studies in Europe and a fresh evaluation of Catholic Orientalism in the sixteenth century. The reception of Syriac into the West is shown to have been characterised, under the influence of Egidio da Viterbo and Postel, by a Christian Kabbalistic world-view which also determined the reception of other Oriental languages. The companion volume The Kabbalistic Scholars of the Antwerp Polyglot Bible exhibits the continuing influence of Christian Kabbalism on later editions.

The Kabbalistic Scholars of the Antwerp Polyglot Bible

Robert J. Wilkinson

• October 2007• ISBN 978 90 04 16251 8• Hardback (xii, 144 pp.)• List price EUR 79.- / US$ 99.-• Studies in the History of Christian Traditions, 138

This work places the Syriac New Testament in the Antwerp Polyglot within a new appreciation of sixteenth century Catholic Syriac and Oriental scholarship. The Spanish antecedents of the Polyglot and the role of Montano in its production are evaluated before the focus is turned upon the Northern Scholars who prepared the Syriac edition. Their motivation is shown, particularly in the case of Guillaume Postel, to derive from both Christian kabbalah and an insistent eschatological timetable. The principles of Christian kabbalah found in the Polyglot are then shown to be characteristic also of Guy Lefevre de la Boderie’s 1584 Paris edition of the Syriac New Testament dedicated to Henri III. This work completes the account of sixteenth century Syriac bibles begun in the companion volume Orientalism, Aramaic and Kabbalah in the Catholic Reformation which also appears with Brill.

Between Faith and UnbeliefAmerican Transcendentalists and the Challenge of Atheism

Elisabeth Hurth

• August 2007• ISBN 978 90 04 16166 5• Hardback (viii, 224 pp.)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 139.-• Studies in the History of Christian Traditions, 136

This book sets out to shed light on what is specific to American Transcendentalism by comparing it with the atheistic vision of German philosophers and theologians like Ludwig Feuerbach and Arthur Schopenhauer. The study argues that atheism was part of the discursive and religious context from which Transcendentalism emerged. Tendencies toward atheism were already inherent in Transcendentalist thought. The atheist scenario came to the surface in the controversy about Emerson’s “new views.” Contemporary critics charged that the deity Emerson worshipped was himself. Emersonian Transcendentalism thus anticipated some of the central concerns in the works of German atheists like Feuerbach. From idealism to atheism seemed but a short step.

Girolamo Zanchi, De religione Christiana fides – Confession of Christian Religion

Edited by Luca Baschera and Christian Moser

• September 2007• ISBN 978 90 04 16118 4• Hardback (Vol I: x, 524 pp.; Vol. II: 320 pp., 2 vols.)• List price EUR 149.- / US$ 194.-• Studies in the History of Christian Traditions, 135

Forced to leave Italy because of his Protestant views, Girolamo Zanchi (1516-1590) became a respected Reformed theologian abroad and helped to shape the emerging ‘Reformed Orthodoxy’. Zanchi’s work on a common confession of faith for the Reformed churches placed him at the heart of the international Reformed community. Although that project was never brought to fruition, the result of Zanchi’s efforts was De religione christiana fides, a critical edition of which is published here, alongside a 16th-century English translation of the work. De religione christiana fides serves as a compendium of Zanchi’s mature theology and reflects the development of Reformed dogmatics and polemic more generally in the late 16th century. It therefore provides an interesting picture of the theology of a whole era.

Renaissance InquisitorsDominican Inquisitors and Inquisitorial Districts in Northern Italy, 1474-1527

Michael Tavuzzi, University of St. Thomas, Rome

• July 2007• ISBN 978 90 04 16094 1• Hardback (xiv, 290 pp.)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 129.-• Studies in the History of Christian Traditions, 134

During the Renaissance there was no centralized Inquisition in northern Italy until Pope Paul III founded the Roman Inquisition in 1542, but there was a dense network of autonomous papal inquisitors. Based on extensive archival research, this study investigates the life of the Dominican friars from whom these inquisitors were mostly drawn. It focuses on a selection of hitherto almost unknown but representative inquisitors to cast new light on their formation, appointment and careers, as well as their principal pursuits - the prosecution of heretics, especially Waldensians and Judaizers, and, most of all, the hunting of witches, for it was at its most intense in northern Italy during the Renaissance, over a century before reaching its peak in Northern Europe.

Martin Luther as ComforterWritings on Death

Neil R. Leroux, University of Minnesota, Morris

• July 2007• ISBN 978 90 04 15880 1• Hardback (xliv, 340 pp.)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 129.-• Studies in the History of Christian Traditions, 133

What was Martin Luther’s teaching regarding death, and to what extent did his own fears of and experiences with death manifest themselves in his writings? What influence did the medieval preoccupation with a ‘good death’ have upon him? How did Luther counsel those facing death—to meet it with acceptance, or resistance, or both? Using meticulous rhetorical analysis of select sermons, pamphlets, and letters of consolation, this book examines how Luther offered comfort to those who were facing their own death or who were coming to terms with the death of loved ones. Thus the book makes an important contribution to existing scholarship on Luther and the formation of an early modern Protestant ethos surrounding death, bereavement, and burial.

Narrative of the Anabaptist MadnessThe Overthrow of Münster, the Famous Metropolis of Westphalia

Christopher S. Mackay, University of Alberta

• July 2007• ISBN 978 90 04 15721 7• Hardback (Vol I: xiv, 378 pp.; Vol. II: 400 pp., 2 vols.)• List price EUR 190.- / US$ 247.-• Studies in the History of Christian Traditions, 132

This is the only accurate translation of the main contemporary historical source for the Anabaptist kingdom of Münster (1534-35), written by Hermann von Kerssenbrock, a young Catholic eyewitness who later became a schoolmaster. The monumental Latin original was never printed during the author’s life and circulated only in manuscript format until the editio princeps of 1899/1900. The only previous translation was an unreliable German version written in 1771. This work contains a number of documents not otherwise available, and the author’s conceptions have had a profound influence on later interpretations of the lurid events surrounding one of the most unusual occurrences of the German Reformation. The extensive introduction and notes place the text in its historical context.

The Zurich Connection and Tudor Political Theology

Should students of Tudor political thought be interested in a feisty Swiss republican who hardly set foot outside his home canton of Zurich, and a Florentine aristocrat who spent just five years of his career in England? This book presents the case for including two leading lights of the Schola Tigurina — Heinrich Bullinger and Peter Martyr Vermigli — among the chief architects of the Protestant religious and political settlement, constructed under Edward VI and consolidated under Elizabeth I. Through study of selected texts of their political theology, this book explores crucial intellectual links between England and Zurich which came to exert a significant influence on the institutions of the Tudor Church and Commonwealth.

Heresy and the Persecuting Society in the Middle AgesEssays on the Work of R.I. MooreEdited by Michael Frassetto

• March 2006• ISBN 978 90 04 15098 0• Hardback (xii, 340 pp.)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 139.-• Studies in the History of Christian Traditions, 129

This volume examines the influence of R. I. Moore and the nature of heresy and its repression in the Middle Ages. The volume considers the vexing question of the origins of medieval heresy and the possible influence of Bogomil missionaries. Geographic areas not usually examined for the growth of heresy are examined, and a new understanding of the violence of the Albigensian Crusade is offered. The blurred boundary between heresy and orthodoxy and the nature of heresy and popular religion are also discussed. The final chapters consider the formation of the persecuting society and Moore’s reflection on scholarship of the late 20th century. The volume offers new insights into the nature of heresy and society in the Middle Ages.

Contributors include: Malcolm Barber, Daniel F. Callahan, Michael Frassetto, James Given, Bernard Hamilton, Carol Lansing, Laurence W. Marvin, R.I. Moore, Mark Pegg, Edward Peters, Arthur Siegel, Susan Taylor Snyder, and Claire Taylor.

Visions in Late Medieval EnglandLay Spirituality and Sacred Glimpses of the Hidden Worlds of Faith

Gwenfair Walters Adams, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary

• February 2007• ISBN 978 90 04 15606 7• Hardback (xxiv, 280 pp.)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 129.-• Studies in the History of Christian Traditions, 130

Visions were highly popular in the late Middle Ages, whether preached as vivid stories from the pulpit, illuminated in saint-filled manuscripts, or experienced during the breathless anticipation of a Mass or in the eerie darkness of a Yorkshire graveyard. This volume is the first to map out the wide range of vision types in late Medieval English lay piety. Analyzing 1000 visionary accounts gathered from sermon and exempla collections, religious devotional works, saints’ legends, and lay stories, it explores five central dynamics of spirituality that visions shaped and sustained: Transactions of Satisfaction (visits to and from purgatory and hell), Reciprocated Devotion (visitations of the saints), Spiritual Warfare (attacks by demons), Supra-Sacramental Sight (Mass and Passion sightings), and Mediated Revelation (prophetic visions).

The Art of Reform in Eleventh-Century FlandersGerard of Cambrai, Richard of Saint-Vanne and the Saint-Vaast Bible

Diane J. Reilly

• March 2006• ISBN 978 90 04 15097 3• Hardback (xviii, 422 pp, 56 illus.)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 139.-• Studies in the History of Christian Traditions, 128

This study is the first detailed exploration of the events and personalities that inspired the early eleventh-century Saint-Vaast Bible’s highly innovative miniature program. Copied and illuminated in the venerable abbey of Saint-Vaast, Arras, the Bible broadcast the political and theological beliefs of Bishop Gerard of Cambrai and Abbot Richard of Saint-Vanne, who cooperated in the sometimes contentious reform of a series of abbeys throughout Flanders. While the miniature program defended royal and episcopal hegemony and highlighted the importance of cooperation between secular and ecclesiastical government, the layout of the Bible facilitated continuous reading during the monastic Office. Illustrated with 46 figures and 10 color plates, this book introduces one of the earliest and most important Romanesque Giant Bibles.

John Calvin and the Grounding of InterpretationCalvin’s First Commentaries

R. Ward Holder

• December 2005• ISBN 978 90 04 14926 7• Hardback (x, 318 pp.)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 139.-• Studies in the History of Christian Traditions, 127

This book considers John Calvin’s interpretation of the Pauline epistles, discussing his interpretive method and the link between biblical interpretation and correct doctrine. It introduces a division between doctrinal hermeneutics and textual exegetical rules clarifying Calvin’s relationship to the antecedent and subsequent traditions. The book portrays Calvin as a theologian for whom the doctrinal and exegetical tasks cohered, especially in the context of the Church in the Reformations. The first section presents the division between hermeneutical principles and exegetical rules, demonstrating each in Calvin’s commentaries. The second section considers the coherence of Calvin’s theological, exegetical and historical efforts. The text is grounded by the inclusion of many instances of Calvin’s interpretation, and his reflections on the nature of biblical interpretation.

“Take Hold of the Robe of a Jew”Herbert of Bosham’s Christian Hebraism

• February 2006• ISBN 978 90 04 14905 2• Hardback (xii, 300 pp. with Hebrew texts)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 139.-• Studies in the History of Christian Traditions, 126

This engaging, meticulously documented study explores the complex, sometimes conflicting motives of Christian hebraists. It locates Herbert of Bosham’s twelfth-century Psalms commentary at the nexus of the intellectual and social movements of his day, and elucidates the complex situations that contributed to Christians’ divergent perspectives on the Jews. Was the twelfth century a rare period of collaboration between Christian and Jewish exegetes, or did anti-Semitism originate in the texts of the era’s Christian polemicists? Modern scholars have been divided on these questions. This study of Herbert’s commentary, which relied on the Hebrew commentary of R. Solomon ben Isaac of Troyes, articulates a more nuanced, integrated approach to medieval Jewish-Christian relations, and provides transcriptions from the unpublished manuscript.

Raiding Saint PeterEmpty Sees, Violence, and the Initiation of the Great Western Schism (1378)

Joëlle Rollo-Koster, University of Rhode Island

• March 2008• ISBN 978 90 04 16560 1• Hardback (288 pp.)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 129.-• Brill’s Series in Church History, 32

Throughout the European Middle Ages, the death of high-ranking prelates was usually interwoven with violent practices. During Empty Sees, mobs ransacked bishops’ and popes’ properties to loot their movable goods. Eventually, in the later Middle Ages, they also plundered the goods of newly-elected popes, and the cells of the Conclave. This book follows and analyzes the history of this violence, using a methodology akin to cultural anthropology, with concepts such as liminal periodization. It contends that pillaging was attached to ecclesiastical interregna, and the nature of ecclesiastical elections contributed to a pillaging ‘problem.’ This approach allows for a fresh reading and re-contextualization of one of the greatest political crises of the later Middle Ages, the Great Western Schism.

Models of Charitable CareCatholic Nuns and Children in their Care in Amsterdam, 1852-2002

Annelies van Heijst, Tilburg University

• June 2008• ISBN 978 90 04 16833 6• Hardback (432 pp.)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 148.-• Brill’s Series in Church History, 33 / Religious History and Culture Series, 1

Models of Charitable Care analyses the practice of Catholic nuns in Amsterdam in the 19th and 20th century. Attention is paid to the ambiguous ascetic spiritual discourse that underpinned their work: it encouraged charity as solidarity with strangers, but caused intense emotional distance too. Historiography is mainly manufactured by religious and lay academics who shared the congregational perspective and presented fairly positive evaluations. Criticism from within, however, is voiced by care leavers who grew up in homes ran by religious. Some are grateful, others bitter. The sisters were living models who combined an anti-worldly outlook with a practical concern for vulnerable creatures. Relating various theoretical interpretations, a typology of three models is developed with ‘agency’ as the differentiating criterion.

Plympton PrioryA House of Augustinian Canons in South-Western England in the Late Middle Ages

Allison D. Fizzard, University of Regina

• November 2007• ISBN 978 90 04 16301 0• Hardback (xx, 292 pp.)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 129.-• Brill’s Series in Church History, 30

This book makes a contribution to knowledge of the history of the Augustinian canons in England through a case study of one particular house in the south-west of the country. Plympton Priory in Devon was founded in 1121 by a bishop of Exeter, and through episcopal and lay donations of temporal and spiritual sources of income became one of the wealthiest houses of Augustinian canons in England. Analysis of surviving records reveals the multiplicity of connections existing between the canons and the laity, the secular clergy, the episcopacy, and the Crown until the priory’s dissolution. The result is a multi-faceted study of the roles played by an Augustinian house in society and within the Church in the late Middle Ages.

Konfession, Migration und ElitenbildungStudien zur Theologenausbildung des 16. Jahrhunderts

Herausgegeben von Herman J. Selderhuis, Theological University Apeldoorn, und Markus Wriedt, Marquette University/Johann Wolfgang von Goethe University Frankfurt/Main

• November 2007• ISBN 978 90 04 16314 0• Hardback (xii, 372 pp. in German with English texts)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 129.-• Brill’s Series in Church History, 31

The keywords migration, elite, and confession that form the leitmotiv of this book allow a focus on major subjects of research in early modern history. Concentrating on subjects relevant to the history of education, the essays collected here offer manifold insights into new source material and the evaluation of methods. The fifteen papers cover a wide range of topics related to the education of academic theologians and clergy in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. As training programmes differed from university to university, this gave rise to migration and an extensive communicative network. Although a final conclusion of methodological questions requires more research, the volume provides an important contribution to the interdisciplinary discussion between representatives of the many historical disciplines.

The fifteen contributors: Luca Baschera, Amy Nelson Burnett, Otfried Czaika, Simone Giese, Anja-Silvia Göing, Leonhard Hell, Wim Janse, Julian Kümmerle, Andreas Mühling, Hans Peterse, Frank van der Pol, Sünje Prühlen, Alexander Schunka, Sven Tode, and Jason Zuidema.

Foreign Churches in St. Petersburg and Their Archives, 1703-1917

Edited by Pieter N. Holtrop, Södertörn Högskola, Stockholm, and C. Hendrik Slechte

• October 2007• ISBN 978 90 04 16260 0• Hardback (xiv, 226 pp)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 99.-• Brill’s Series in Church History, 29

Walking the first mile of the Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersburg, the visitor is struck by the sight of the Dutch, Finnish, Swedish, German, Armenian Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, and Roman Catholic churches. These buildings reflect the religious, cultural, and social diversity that has been characteristic of the city since Tsar Peter the Great invited thousands of foreigners from all over Western Europe to build this settlement at the estuary of the Neva River. On the occasion of the third centenary of St. Petersburg (2003), historians and archivists from Russia as well as other European countries convened to study the history of the city’s foreign churches in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The resulting studies, published here, offer fascinating insights into the almost forgotten history of those churches and show how substantially they contributed to the religious, cultural, social, and economic history of St. Petersburg.

Table of Contents available on www.brill.nl

Pieter N. Holtrop holds a doctorate in Church History (VU University Amsterdam, 1975) and is currently Professor of Religious Studies at Södertörn Högskola in Stockholm. C. Hendrik Slechte studied history at the University of Utrecht and is a free-lance writer.

Arminius on the Assurance of SalvationThe Context, Roots, and Shape of the Leiden Debate, 1603-1609

Keith D. Stanglin, Harding University

• February 2007• ISBN 978 90 04 15608 1• Hardback (xviii, 286 pp.)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 129.-• Brill’s Series in Church History, 27

Although scholarship has treated, on the one hand, some aspects of Jacobus Arminius’s theology, and on the other hand, the doctrine of assurance in the Reformed theologians of early Protestant orthodoxy, nevertheless proper attention has not yet been given to the intersection of these topics: Arminius’s doctrine of assurance. With special attention to previously neglected primary sources, this book offers stimulating insights into the academic context of Arminius, and, along with a comparative analysis of his colleagues at Leiden University, explores new horizons in his doctrines of salvation and assurance. Arminius’s search for true assurance of salvation emerges as a decisive factor in his famous dissent from Reformed theology.

Singen für die SeligkeitStudien zu einer Liedersammlung der Devotio moderna: Zwolle, Historisch Centrum Overijssel, coll. Emmanuelshuizen, cat. VI. Mit Edition und Faksimile

Ulrike Hascher-Burger

• July 2007• ISBN 978 90 04 16151 1• Hardback (x, 342 pp. in German)• List price EUR 99.- / US$ 129.-• Brill’s Series in Church History, 28

This volume concerns a music manuscript written at the end of the fifteenth century and associated with the Brethren of the Common Life at Zwolle. The manuscript is bound together with an incunable containing one of the most influential theological treatises of the Devotio moderna: the De spiritualibus ascensionibus of Gerard Zerbolt of Zutphen. The music manuscript contains 25 one-part hymns and two text excerpts on the Four Last Things (death, judgement, heaven, and hell), the core theme of the Brethren’s penitential meditation. The book deals with the codicological construction of the book, the transmission, and the function of the songs in their context of the practice of pentitential meditation. The multidisciplinary study makes an important contribution to research on hymns in the late Middle Ages as well as on the music and spirituality of the Devotio moderna.
